Hawks Crack the Buckeye Nuts Wide Open Thread

Sorry for your loss.
Thank you Dadman. She had a full life and lived to be 88. My dad passed a little over 13 months ago and passed away at 91. I am starting to not like Iowa winters. Glad to be back in Utah with the 30's. Never thought I would say that when I lived in Georgia for twenty years.

My criticism of IA vs Ohio State:
Peyton is a George Costanzi chucker. His shot selection choices are ridiculous.
I seriously didn't think it could get much worse then what Patrick used to throw up there but he didn't do it at the volume of what Peyton is. Their basketball IQ being so bad for being upperclassman (and a coaches kid in Patricks case) just blows my mind. Time and score, flow of the game how he's being guarded, when and where he is on the floor none of that matters to Sandfort. If he's got the ball he's gonna find a way to chuck it up there. That left handed off balance horse shot he threw up there shoulda got him benched...

The 1 thing I'll give Sandfort some grace for is I don't blame him for being put at the 4 spot. That's all Fran and obviously he's not a power forward and he shouldn't be asked to defend/try to box out for rebounds those guys every possession. He's not big enough nor athletic enough for it. Hell he's arguably not athletic enough for D1 hoops. When he's hot he's skilled enough but it's just way too streaky.

1980 where have you been? In hibernation? If so this is a bad time to come outside. A nice warm cave out into the cold dreary world of college basketball.
Happy to be back. Yes, Iowa not setting the b ball world on fire are they. You know what I find interesting this season? AJ Storr Dude transfers to Kansas and looks like a completely different player....and not in a good way. Thoughts???

“Shooters gotta shoot.”

That was my mentality with Payton up until this game. You guys are right and I am wrong. Him just jacking up shots isn’t working, especially when the team defense and rebounding is this bad.

One could argue there are a few games where he has shot us out of the game with all the misses and quick shots. What's the old saying, "Live by the 3 die by the 3"

Old Lute had a point system that he rated the players on. It contained every aspect, turnovers, points scored, steals, rebounds, assists fouls, NOT JUST SCORING, like your playing back lot basketball. That point system made everyone better.

Lute was also religious about scoring from inside of the paint and built an offense to get the ball into the paint.

To me his greatest attribute was building a team around the players skills NOT trying to build a player around a specific offensive.

Guess where your ass would be SITTING if you didn’t play defense?

So a guy just jacking up threes would find his ass on the bench unless he was doing a lot of other things right.

Lute and “ball in the paint” requirement noted by Big D: Bruce “Sky” King should have been charged with assault to commit injury. I sat on a folding chair under the basket in Des Moines when Iowa played Drake and witnessed it first hand. OMG!
Love those older Hawks. Saw "Donnie" Lester who rarely dunked the ball take it down the lane down 20 to 0 against Michigan at home and tomahawked a left handed dunk . I can't recall him ever dunking again.

Ronnie was like a cat. Quick as hell, nearly impossible for one person to guard If not for his loss due to an injury we might be talking about Iowa’s last national title in basketball.
