Hawks and B10 Tourney

he's not been great in the conference tourney - you'll get 0 argument from me on that

but IMO every team is different and every year is as well. I think his history is just that, history and what has happened before has 0 effect on what WILL happen this year especially with as much roster turnover as we have had this season.

His last 3 years were basically with the same roster. That roster is gone. It's not like Fran somehow doesn't know how to coach a game when the game happens to be in the Big 10 tournament.

See Ferentz and bowl games.

You mean Ferentz recently or Ferentz before that where he was good? Or Ferentz before he was good when he sucked again? It's funny how one small streak can make people think there is something going on. Some people would assume a coin was tails on both side if it landed tails 3 times in a row.

Small streak? He hasn't won a bowl game since 2010

Love that analogy, lol.

I'm not sure what to make of the BTT issues we've had the past 3 years. It seemed like the first couple years, Fran's teams showed up and played pretty well, they were just a little outgunned those first couple years.

The Gesell, Woodbury, White, etc. teams certainly laid an egg every year. But, as pointed out, those guys are gone now. Different group this year and the years to come, so I guess we'll find out if it was something with those particular players, or the coaching staff.

For the record, simply losing the first round of the BTT won't prove to me that they didn't show up. It's when you lose to a clearly inferior opponent, or get totally blown out, that I don't want to see. If the Hawks put up a good fight against a good opponent, I'll be happy. I don't think that's happened since 2013 (MSU - the Teddy V game).

We always end up playing a team way better than us which is more of a "Kirk has been having trouble fielding good teams" problem more than a "Kirk can't coach bowl games" problem. I was referring more of Fran with my comment tho.

Fwiw I never thought Kirk was somehow a genius coaching bowl games when we were on a good streak. Both thoughts are dumb in my opinion.

Huge difference between a 3 year streak and a 7 year streak

Great last paragraph because that was going to be my rebuttal. I don't want to see a bunch of I told you so posts if we happen to lose a hard fought close game. Those last 3 games we lost we were huge favorites and laid an egg. That was a senior class problem in my opinion.

It wasn't a 7 year streak because we sucked so bad one year we didn't even make a bowl game.

Iowa routinely gets bumped up to a bowl game they have no business being in because of fan travel or a B1G team getting bumped into the BCS or playoffs. It doesn't excuse it, it's just how it is. We should win more.

It's actually a really good excuse for the losses. Just not the beat downs.

This team is good enough and deep enough to win the BTT...IMO. Playing 4 games in 4 games doesn't concern me. But we need to stay out of the Wednesday games.

This post only pertains to a Wednesday game in the BTT.

Win our 3 home games and lose our 3 road games and we are 9-9. I think this is a realistic expectation.

So I will start at the bottom of the standings and work my way up until I find 4 teams projected at 8-10 or worse.

Rutgers (10 losses) - @ PU, @ NW and MD

Nebraska (8 losses in last 9 games) - @ OSU, @ MSU and @ MN

Illinois (8 losses) - @ IA, NW, @ NE and MSU

Penn State (7 losses) - @ IL, @ NE, PU, @ MN and @ Iowa

OSU (7 losses) - @ MD, @ MSU, WI and @ PSU

IN (7 losses) - @ MN, @ IA, @ PU and @ OSU

Okay, I listed 6 teams that I project at 8-10 or worse. And there is a very good chance IMO that at least 4 of these teams will finish 7-11 or worse...allowing Iowa room for an unexpected (and unlikely) home loss.

This post assumes Iowa will finish 9-9 and at least 1 game ahead of the 6 teams previously mentioned. I really don't like the idea of being the 8 seed. So I want to find at least 1 more team at 8-10.

Michigan (6 losses and 0-4 on the road) - @ IN, WI, @ MN, @ RUT, PU, @ NW and @ NE

So Iowa looks very well positioned to be the 7 seed...a perfect draw IMO. I think we have to win the BTT to make the NCAA. And I think the 7 seed gives us the best chance to make that run.
