Here is another look at the eye-popping numbers being put up by Mark Weisman; here is how he compares to Marcus Coker in 2011 and Shonn Greene in 2008

Good article. It will be interesting to compare after the season. This OL is helping things out big time and will only improve. With Bullock coming back will we see the same amount of touches go to Weisman? Our backfield could be dangerous.

Jon, first off, I love Mark Weisman. He is what Iowa needed when Iowa needed it. I also loved me some Shonn Greene (still do).

However, do you recall Shonn's first five games in 2008? He was a stud-to-be. He was far from in-game shape when the season began. He trucked defenders in games 1-5, but he ran out of gas early in game one, later in game two, later in game three, but you could see The Beast emerging. Shonn only got stronger as the season progressed.

I don't think Weisman can get stronger or in better physical condition. But he can develop better RB skills, and that will be fun to watch. I'm just not sure that comparing Weisman's first 10 quarters to Shonn's first five games is an equal comparison.

But both were/are fun to watch and fun to anticipate watching.

No doubt. The main thing I remember from Greene at that time was his lack of patience in the zone scheme game...he was running up into the pile too quickly early in the year and about week three or four, he started to figure it out. Weisman is making the same progress and he as so much less experience as a tailback in his life than Greene.

You are right. It's really unfair to Weisman ;)

All this said, I don't think Weisman every has the kind of single season Greene had. They are different. Where they have been similar so far is just their raw production.

The temptation to compare is natural. Greene was a special back...NFL-ready. I still see Coker's yards largely a byproduct of "the system" (run a lot, and run one guy to death).

Weisman is kind of in between those guys...more elusive than Coker (and perhaps more powerful)... but not as fast or "hard" as Greene.

I do think that we're in for trouble again, in the long run, if KFz runs one guy to death.. instead of giving him some rest. Hopefully Garmon, Canzeri and/or Malloy will be seeing more carries as the season progresses. (geez, did I forget about Bullock?!) The possibilities with a two-back set...and passes to the RB ... are exciting.

Jon I cannot believe you are actually comparing Greene to Weisman. I like Weisman and his story is neat but he is no where near the talent Greene was. You give anybody a 5 yard hole to run through and their numbers will be incredible. Greene did not always have those holes and I remember him gaining a ton of yards after initial contact and a lot of times breaking free. Greene was a punishing runner but also had the quickness to bounce it to the outside, I do not see that in Weisman. Weisman has looked good against UNI, Central Michigan, and Minnesota now let's see how he does against Michigan State. Weisman's great numbers is the product of a good offensive line creating huge holes against some below average defensive lines. Some of those holes were so big you could drive a truck through them.

it's too early to tell....they are very different backs. I appreciate Jon putting this out there though, intriguing. I wont choose, except to choose to be big fans of both.

I do disagree with the poster than mentiones that MW cant get stronger or in better physical condition, not sure why you think that. I think, if healthy, he will get stronger, faster, bigger. Remember he is only a sophomore, he is gonna get bigger if he wants to.

Again, if the Oline remains solid and MW stays healthy, I am fairly certain he will go down as an all time favorite in a Hawkeye uniform.

Luv me some #45. But don't you really need to consider the competition thru these 10 qtrs?
I just could not predict or bet that anything like the recent production can continue.

With the play of the OL and the downfield blocking by WRs? Why wouldn't you bet he will still put up good numbers. If anything the OL will improve and Weisman will only get better at RB.

Three teams - UNI, Central Mich, Minny - I think these three teams are so far below the level of future competition its not funny. Plus, tape is out on #45 and the once again blitz challenged Hawks.

I hated sitting thru the 2nd half last week but loved the idea of practicing against all out run stuffing. Result 7 points- against Minny.

I remember by the middle of 2008 season that there was such a focus on Greene that a one legged Brodell was getting open on deep post patterns.

Hopefully, Weisman becomes such a threat that the deep stuff opens up even more. Waggle, other play action stuff maybe GD has a seam route or 2 for CJF in the playbook. KD takes advantage of single coverage.
