Hawkeyes Up 3 Spots to No. 16 in New AP Poll

Man, good arguements on both sides. This could make for a good thread on it's own. I like the ending the drought point.

That would be great to see, too. Either way - a regular season title, or a deep NCAA run - I'd be smiling.

No doubt. It seems Iowa's record as a lower seed, at least in my lifetime, has been pretty atrocious. Doesn't help when you're getting Duke & UK in the 2nd round some years, but still. Outside of winning an 8/9 game as a 9 seed (1992 - Texas) and a 4/5 game as a 5 (1999 - Arkansas), and let's face it, 8/9 and 4/5 is basically a coin flip game, I can't say I recall Iowa pulling even so much as a mild upset in the NCAA Tournament.

I'm not saying that's "falling short of expectations", I don't EXPECT Iowa to beat a 1-2 seed, but there's been little NCAA magic from the Hawks. It pains me that Iowa can't seem to ever even make the Sweet 16 when I see the VCU's, Butlers, and George Masons of the world sneaking into the Final Four.

I really would love to see a deep run from the Hawks. Just 2 Sweet 16 appearances since '87, and one of them was courtesy of what was left of that great 1986-87 team, in 1988. So only 1 in the past 27 years. Ouch.

I've always just thought of how bad we've been in the tournament. I've never really thought about how we have never over achieved as long as I've been a fan. The last 2 years we've had a team capable of doing it but it didn't happen. 2 years ago we had a potential top 10 team and last year we had a great bracket. This year it won't happen because we're too ******* awesome to over achieve.

Yep, and 2 years ago, I think Iowa could've beaten UMass, and then Duke got punked early on to clear the path. But TN ended up making a run instead of Iowa. And last year, of course, Gonzaga played out of their minds in the first half, and it was game over by halftime. Sigh...

As I said, I don't expect it, but it does kind of bug me. It's March Madness - lower seeds often pull upsets. Just seems it's never an Iowa game, unless it's Northwestern freaking State.

Michigan would have been the toughest team until the elite 8 and we destroyed them esrlier in the year. Damn...

That's right, I forgot that TN beat Michigan. They made the Elite 8 right?

Imagine my angst when I saw Duke going down a couple days after Iowa lost to Tennessee. I knew that Iowa really missed the boat. That's about the first time I can recall a major upset in Iowa's part of the bracket.

Then there was another big upset the next year with ISU. Get past Gonzaga and we had another fairly clear path to the elite 8. I can't remember who ended up winning that Michigan game. I just remember thinking we should have been in it.

Dang I think you're right about ISU being in our bracket last year. I seemed to remember people talking about a potential Iowa/ISU NCAA matchup. I can only imagine the hype for that one.

I looked it up and Michigan beat TN in the Sweet 16 two years ago, 73-71. Michigan lost to UK in the Elite 8, 75-72.

ISU and UCLA were in our bracket.

Whatever year Alford's first tournament year was (beat Creighton in the first round) we almost got to play 15 seed holy cross in the second round as they nearly beat Kentucky. Instead that didn't happen and Kentucky beat us fairly handily in the second round.

Iowa basketball luck has always blown.

That would have really sucked when we lost to Holy Cross.

Why the 2006 Minnesota hockey team? Was that the last time HC won a game in something?

Yeah, on an Iowa message board i don't expect there to be much understanding of a college hockey mention from years ago. That club team that plays at Coral Ridge is pretty dope though. Assuming that's still a thing.

I'm pretty sure Michigan did because I think they made the finals. I just remember we pants them that year and then they made a deep run.

Would you'all prefer #1 or #2?

I'll go #2. Hard to choose, but I grew up a Hawkeye hoops fan and as much as I love Hawkeye football, basketball is still where my heart lies. As was discussed earlier, a regular season BB title almost certainly gets you a 1-2 seed, and that's a great season. Ditto for the Rose Bowl, though!

On an unrelated note. Has anyone seen Indiana's conference schedule? They play Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa twice. If we had that easy of a schedule we would have a really good chance to win the conference.

Indiana is 4-0...no wins of note in those 4. I think they will lose 2 out of 3 road games...Wisconsin, Michigan and Penn State. They end the season with these 7 games.

Iowa
@ MSU
Nebraska
Purdue
@ Illinois
@ Iowa
Maryland

I put their ceiling at 11-7 even with the easy schedule. And 11-7 won't be anywhere close to 1st place...probably around 6th. And losing Blackmon offset any scheduling advantage they may have had.

#2...I said going into Rose Bowl week that I would be happy winning 2 out of 3. People I talked to would all say the same thing..."As long as one of them is the Rose Bowl." And my response was always the same. I don't care which 2 we win. I'm a basketball fan 1st and I knew 2-0 against those 2 teams was setting us up for what could be a special basketball season.

One of those got us closer to a championship this season. The rose bowl wasnt one of them. The rose bowl is a neat game but once we beat Purdue i didn't care about the loss at all.
