Hawkeyes No. 18 in 1st CFP Rankings

I'm not sure even a 10-2 team is a New Years six team. For Iowa to finish 10-2 then that means they win the rest of their regular season games but Minnesota still wins the West. I have a hard time believing the Big Ten would not send an 11-2 Minnesota team to the Rose Bowl (assuming they lose the BT championship game. So if Ohio State is in the playoffs (assuming they win out) it depends on how Penn State and Michigan finish the year in order to allow Iowa to be the 3rd team in one of the big New Year bowls.

A 10-3 Iowa team is in (which means they lose the BT championship game but, you are right, a 9-3 team is not.

A 10-3 Iowa would not be in over an 11-1 PSU.

You're assuming Minnesota beats PSU AND Wisconsin? I have a hard time believing they go 2-2 over their final four games, let alone 3-1.

If they lose to either of those two AND Iowa, Iowa would be the west Champion should they go 10-2.

I think his point was that there is no way Iowa wins the West and finishes 10-2, because then Iowa will need to play in the CCG. Assuming they lose the CCG, they will finish 10-3, not 10-2.

The only way Iowa finishes 10-2 is to win out and NOT win the west. Which means Minn wins the west with an 11-1 record, including wins over PSU and Wiscy, then assuming Minn loses the CCG, then they finish 11-2.

So the question is who would the bowls take first? Big Ten West champ 11-2 Minn that beat PSU and lost to Iowa

Or 10-2 Iowa that beat Minn but lost to PSU

Or 10-2 PSU that beat Iowa and lost to Minn.

Anyway, my head is spinning with all these hypotheticals, do I am going to stop now.

If Minnesota can beat Northwestern, Penn St. and Wisconsin, sure they are West Champs. That’s a lot of ifs and buts for me. I guess to be more specific, West Champ 10-2 is a New Years Six team. They will be ranked around 10 and yes, Penn St. is in the dance too at 11-1.

Ah fair enough, that makes more sense.

Recency bias is pretty big though, as is fanbase appeal.

Say Iowa finishes 10-2, they'll have won 6 games in a row, 2 over ranked opponents, with a chance to have 3 ranked victories if ISU turns things around, and their only losses by one possession each to ranked teams. So their reputation will be pretty solid. As for fans, Iowa has a solid reputation as a traveling fanbase (as long as we're not going to the same destination 4 times in 8 years).

Whereas an 11-2 Minnesota will have gone 3-2 to finish the year, 2-2 against ranked teams, and I'm assuming whoever plays OSU in the CCG will lose by at least 2 possessions. On top of that, Minnesota is in the midst of their best season in 50 years, and not only have poor (and decreasing) attendance at home, but have yet to sell out since 2015. How would such a fanbase travel?

Like you said though, hypotheticals.

I’m not saying Minnesota will! I’m responding to a poster that says Iowa will be in one if the big six bowls at 10-2, I’m saying a 10-2 finish is impossible unless Minnesota wins the West.

It’s not necessarily who the bowls take first, I’m sure most bowls prefer Iowa over Minnesota since Iowa sells more tickets. The Big Ten has a say in who goes to the Rose Bowl and I don’t see them sending Iowa over Minnesota in that scenario.

Big Ten picks the Rose Bowl, right? At 11-1 Pedo State could be a playoff team or will at least get a big six bowl bid.

Assuming O$U is in the CFP, IF PSUs only loss is to O$U, I gotta think they would be in overt the West champion...unless it is a 12-1 Minnesota. Minnesota, at this point, is the only B1G West team that can finish with less than 2 losses. And if that is the case, it means PSU would have 2 losses. Otherwise, Minnesota would be 12-1 :) In essence, Iowa and Wiscy have to win out, and only one of THOSE two can accomplish that. And even then, they would need help from PSU OR the other team (Wiscy, Iowa).

This is getting too complicated!

I just don’t see the Big Ten choosing Pedo State over the West champion for the Rose Bowl.

If PSUs only loss is to O$U, and B1G West champ has 2 losses, maybe not. But If B1G West champ comes out of B1G CG with 3 losses, I think a 1-loss PSU is in the Rose Bowl.

One thing is (almost) for certain: The B1G West champ is not beating O$U.

BUT, and I am moving the goal post a little, I think a 11-1 Pedo State could be in the 4 team playoffs.

Maybe you're right on the Rose Bowl. I know the Big Ten has a say in who goes and I would think they'd want to award a team that won their division. But you got me waffling on it.

It sucks we won't see these scenarios playing out though. I think Minnesota gets it's wakeup call tomorrow and Wisconsin will still wind up winning the West. OTOH, we were all waiting for this to happen last year to Northwestern and it didn't.

Yeah, guffus cleared things up for me.

Yeah, somehow, NW managed to run the gauntlet of B1G West teams. Kind of amazing, really, given their non-con performances.
