Hawkeyes No. 18 in 1st CFP Rankings

It seems like Iowa has been in more of these rankings then not when they roll them out every November. I wonder how often (or amount of weeks) they've been ranked in the CFP top 25 vs not ranked since these started?

Unless the Hawkeyes win out, it will be tough to move much. But that also depends on what happens elsewhere.

But you have to ask, does it matter? No, not really in the end when they are looking for 4 teams.
I keep hearing this logic. I hear it from my badger friends too now that they are out of the playoff.

It doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re considering the season a failure becuase you didn’t make the playoffs as an Iowa or Wisconsin what world are you living in? Do you really want to watch them in the playoff against an Alabama or Clemson? Is that realistic?

No is the answer to the questions above. You have to set realistic expectations. For Iowa the goal every year is to win the west and see what happens. There are still some quality bowls you can play against quality opponents.

A lot of things can happen. Iowa could win out and get to Indy and win. Bama and LSU could lose a few. Clemson could get put on probation. I'm not guaranteeing we are in the playoffs, but we most certainly are not out. That crazy 2007 season had a couple of 2 loss teams fighting for the national title, so we are not in uncharted waters here. Let's not give up hope yet, guys.

My point is that there are still the AP and Coaches polls. The CFP Rankings are merely to show where teams are in the selecting order or how close they are to the top 5 where they would be selected.

Yes, I want my team in the College Football playoffs, regardless how they are expected to do against any team. That the whole damn goal. If Iowa or a team wins the BIG they would have a chance at the playoffs depending on the year which is a great season. No reason to pull the bar down. Plus, it's only that much better for recruiting.

If a team is getting into the playoffs, regardless of the outcome in the playoff, it's going to help with recruiting. It's better than going 8-4 and going to the Music City Bowl. That's just my take.

I believe the playoff rankings help determine the NY6 bowl participants.

Yea, but with those situations happening, Iowa or a team would move up the rankings and be in position. The poster asked if Iowa ended the season 9-3 if they would still be ranked around #12. My point is if it is the end of the season, does it really matter then? Not really.

Iowa would merely be off to the Holiday Bowl which is a nice bowl but has nothing to do with the playoffs.

Yea. It probably has an effect along with the AP and Coaches poll which for the most part, will mostly parallel the CFP poll. But, they are still invites and where a team ends in conference plays into the selection, along with the rule if they were at a certain bowl the year before. There are a few factors.

The AP and Coaches Polls are for discussion before the CFP Rankings are released. They have no bearing at all on the playoff or NY6 Bowls.

The New Year's Six (NY6) bowls are the top six major NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision bowl games: the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl. The New Year's Six represent six of the ten oldest bowl games currently played at the FBS level. These six top-tier bowl games rotate the hosting of the two College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinal games, which determine the teams that play in the final College Football Playoff National Championship game.[1] The rotation is set on a three-year cycle with the following pairings: Rose/Sugar, Orange/Cotton, and Fiesta/Peach.

The selection committee seeds and pairs the top four teams, and along with their final CFP rankings determine the participants for the other four non-playoff New Year's Six bowls that are not hosting the semifinals that year. These four non-playoff bowls are also referred to as the Selection Committee bowl games. These six games focus on the top 12 teams in the rankings; to date during the College Football Playoff era (2014 through 2018 seasons), of the 60 teams to play in a New Year's Six game, only six have been ranked lower than 12th.

Twelve schools are selected for these major, top tier bowls. These include the champions of the "Power Five" conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC). The highest-ranked champion from the "Group of Five" conferences (The American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt) is guaranteed a berth if the group's top team is not in the playoff.[2]

Sure it matters somewhat. It’s like NFL teams claiming post-season appearances as an accomplishment. If you’re in the top 25 that’s a barometer that you’re better than average. CFP16 means you’re good.

10-2 Iowa is a New Years six team. 9-3 Iowa is not.

I'm not sure even a 10-2 team is a New Years six team. For Iowa to finish 10-2 then that means they win the rest of their regular season games but Minnesota still wins the West. I have a hard time believing the Big Ten would not send an 11-2 Minnesota team to the Rose Bowl (assuming they lose the BT championship game. So if Ohio State is in the playoffs (assuming they win out) it depends on how Penn State and Michigan finish the year in order to allow Iowa to be the 3rd team in one of the big New Year bowls.

A 10-3 Iowa team is in (which means they lose the BT championship game but, you are right, a 9-3 team is not.
