Hawkeyes Missing in Action This Year

With the youth playing in games these days, it got me to thinking about players who were supposed to make a splash but now don't even see the field. I get that only so many guys can play on an 85 scholarship roster, but where are these guys now and is there a chance for them to see minutes next year?

1. Adrian Falconer - the guy played as a true freshmen two years ago and had a few passes thrown his way. Last year he played sparingly. This year, he's a junior and I haven't seen him on the field at all. Why burn a guy's redshirt if he's not even seeing reps as a junior?

2. Devonte Young - like Falconer, he had his redshirt burned in a season where he didn't make a catch. This year, he's a sophomore, and he's catchless. Is he hurt? Surely he could return kicks or something.

3. Peter Pekar - I believe Pekar started several games last year, and got quite a bit of playing time. This year, I've yet to hear his name called, and I'm guessing he plays a bit on special teams.

4. Aaron Mends - Mends was listed as a preseason starter two years ago but was beat out by Bo Bower. Last year, Mends never saw the field until the end of the bowl game. This year, more of the same.

5. Keith Duncan - Duncan had a great year last year, and was one of the most accurate kickers in the Big 10. Recenos is having a great year this year, but it's crazy that a star one year would never see the field the next.

6. Drew Cook - Cook got a seriously disproportionate amount of discussion over the past couple of years. From competing at QB, to switching to TE, to his pedigree. He's now in his 3rd year in the program...has he played on special teams or in mop up duty?

7. Tyler Wiegers - Stanley and Wiegers were supposedly neck and neck for starting quarterback up until the week before the season started. While Stanley won the position fair and square, if they were so even, it's interesting that Stanley has thrown 260 passes this year to Wiegers 2. It's not like the Iowa offense has set the world on fire (OSU game aside).

8. Ryan Boyle - Boyle made waves when he signed with Iowa as a dual threat QB...something we have not had since Brad Banks. He made more waves when he switched to QB and was a highlight real during last year's spring game. Despite his play, he never saw the field at WR under Greg Davis, and apparently moved back to QB this year. Given that he is the same age as Stanley, and backup QBs do not play at Iowa, what is Boyle's future?
 
First, let's be clear. As it applies to his participation on this forum Iowa Law was never right about a single thing. I suspect this new moniker is his attempt to return because it smacks of the same nonsense he was famous for... a whole lot of verbiage with no apparent point.

The answer to each of the meaningless questions posed is the same. The staff evaluates the players on a daily basis in practice and puts the players on the field that they believe give the team the best chance to win. You may disagree with their choices but you aren't getting paid to make those decisions so what difference does all the speculation make? None is the correct answer...
 
Every single team has a bunch of guys who are big time recruits who just don't pan out or win a starting job. With the notable exception of Tyler Wiegers at quarterback the guys on the list were just surpassed by other guys.

I understand that this poster has a poor reputation for good reason, but I didn't take this particular post as a stupid question or as trolling. I find this question interesting. If there's already a thread about what I'm going to bring up here, then my apologies:

Was it a Jon Miller podcast? An article I found on Twitter? Already can't remember the source and I'm sure someone will know, but someone recently made an argument based solely on personnel decisions (underclassmen) that the coaching staff this season, maybe more so than ever before in the Ferentz era, is preparing for the future: in this case, for 2018 and 2019. I think it's an intriguing theory.
 
The only player on your list that really frustrates me is Devonte young. He looked like a stud this offseason catching passes. For him not even to get reps in the offense is confusing since max cooper even is getting in there and even Brandon smith who looks like a beast down the road. Don’t get me wrong I’m pleased with the wr who are out there but I’d like to see what young could do
 
The only name on there I'm sorta wondering what the deal was with is Mends. I heard he was a weight room warrior day 1 on campus and was just a fast athletic guy. For him to have not beaten out Bower either last yr or this one surprised me a little. The other guys were just all leap frogged by other guys.
You put 2 QBs on the list. 3 if you count Cook but for peats sake you can only play 1 at a time and thankfully we haven't had any back and forth on that. And after last game of all games your going to try questioning why any of those other guys haven't pushed Stanley aside?? Get out of here. Iowa typically wants 1 qb out there to lead the way and the other gets garbage time reps. That's what we are seeing nothing to critique with that. I'm so glad we are past the CJ/JR back and forth uncertainty. This is the IDEAL SITUATION. Quit trying to stir the pot with the QBs

Young I kinda thought might be playing more this year because he got a ton of reps in the spring with the ones but it hasn't shaken out for whatever reasons. We haven't been in practice all this time. But would you put him in over JVB, Easley, Marsette or Smith? I wish the true freshman would hold on to the ball a little better but I think they will the more reps they get.

Duncan may have had an ok year but he can't kick 45 yards and out. Recinos can. And I think it's good that just because you had a good year 40 yards and in doesn't mean you just inherit the job again. You gotta earn it and he didn't earn it through spring and fall practice and Recinos has done nothing to warrant taking it away from him.

Pekar is a 4th string TE maybe 5th depending on where the kid from WDM is in line. Who cares? The top 2 guys we have are borderline the top 2 TEs in the BIG. They are going to get most of the reps and Wieting gets thrown in there on some more obvious running downs and 3 TE sets. Again nothing to complain about here.

I don't know why I spent 3 mins of my life ripping this thread to shreds other then self gratification but since I might get a like or 2 for it I'll sleep better tonight

If it isn't him, it is one hell of an impersonation.
 
Boyle to safety? He has the size/athleticism and you would think smarts to be caption of the D and read opposing offenses. Seems like a natural fit
 
If you consider yourself a talented wide receiver...and can't get a touch in a game playing for Iowa after a couple of years in the "system"...I feel sorry for you.
 
This is nothing new and can be a good sign if look at it objectively. This is a good sign saying better players are coming up and taking those spots. Vandeberg is not having the same production as last year because he was pretty much it last year so it's a good sign for the team that his production is down a bit as others are involved.

Same thing happened when Fran came in for Lickliter, as he got his recruits in others dropped down the roster. Same thing with Uhl and Dailey. This is nothing new with team sports.
