NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa — The scary revelation isn’t how quickly Devyn Marble garnered the trust of his teammates and the respect of opponents.

It’s how much higher Marble believes his potential can elevate in comparison to his breakout sophomore season.

Priority one: buckle down defensively.

“He’ll tend to rest a little bit on defense,â€￾ said Iowa coach Fran McCaffery in February. “He just doesn’t sustain it from a concentration standpoint like he needs to. I’ve tried to explain to him, ‘If you want to play at the next level, you’ve got to do it at both ends of the floor.’ If he does that for himself, they’re going to pay him to play.â€￾

Devyn certainly has the ability to play good defense. When he is totally concentrating on D, and has his footwork secure, with his long arms he can be very effective. There were many times the opponent had trouble bringing the ball upcourt getting trapped on both sides of the half court line, usually in the corner. Many times that used up a lot of clock, and took them out of their offense where they had not the luxury of setting up an offensive play.....

It would work at times, sometimes more than others, with the incoming athleticism, perhaps we will be more consistent.....

Devyn should be effective in transition defense along with the rest of the team....

After a while the pathetic opponent will look with dread at the prospect of coming into Carver filled with rowdy, knowledgeable Hawkeye fans, screaming with fury at the referees.....

I have a dream.....

The whole team has a lot to improve on defensively. Let's hope it improves greatly.

I think the improved depth of the team, will lead to an increased focus on D. Now that you can rotate guys in and out Fran can take advantage of fresh players. Much of his offense also depends on creating turnovers, and transition baskets, that are created off of good defense.

For this reason alone, I really doubt Clemmons, or Ingram redshirt. We just need the bodies at those positions this year too badly. Meyer is at a position of depth though, so I think he would be the only one to RS.

i'm not counting on another "breakout" year for Dev. just needs to keep working on the little things. Fran certainly is a good motivator, surrounds his criticism with compliments.

This could also be coachspeak for "He couldn't guard a parked car".

It wasn't Marble's lack of on the ball defense that was awful....

a stat charted as MBO's (missed block outs) - Marble averaged almost twice as many as any other player

those are killer pts to give up

That is an interesting stat. Thanks. At times most Hawk defenders had difficulty blocking out. That is why having some size in the middle could really help this season.....
