Hawkeyes Lose in France, Pierre Pierce makes Winning Shot

this from a french site, after I plugged it into a french to english translator:

"For his first game of preparation, the Hyeres-Toulon Var Basketball is imposed 84-82 against the University of Iowa. It took an extension and a shot at the buzzer of Pierre Pierce to decide between the two teams. Note that Ludovic Chelle has not taken part in the meeting."

So Pierce hits a buzzer beater...and Iowa told The Gazette they used an outside scheduling service for these games and never would have scheduled the game if they had known Pierce was on the roster...they were handed a roster minutes before the game. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to see some of their reactions.

Oh cripes ... what's the big deal playing Pierce? Makes for a much more interesting trip.

For some reason I don't think it mattered all that much to Fran. He wasn't here for the fiasco and certainly doesn't want to resurrect it. It is over and dead. I think Fran wants to play anybody, within reason, to give the team even more valuable experience. He is looking to the future not the past. Just my opinion, Meat.....

but i'm sure Fran was very aware of what kind of stink it could have caused. yes, he wasn't here, but that name still brings bad memories back to a lot of folks in IC. i've moved on, but it really could have been a PR nightmare i guess. i'm glad that it's over and done with.

It's just a saga that I think all involved parties would love to just put behind them, including Pierce. Not that I feel sorry for him at all, because he's earned what he's gotten, but that stuff will dog him for the rest of his life and playing against Iowa just digs it all up again.

I'm just hoping this doesn't end up being looked upon as one of those fateful harbingers for a disappointing season, like the black cat and the Cubs.

I doubt the players knew anything about it. The oldest Iowa-born player is McCabe, and he was probably in middle school when that stuff went down, if not younger.

Younger. I was in seventh grade when Pierce first got into trouble and a freshman when he was finally booted. McCabe would have been in fifth and seventh grade for the respective incidents.
