(From Iowa Sports Info) The University of Iowa wrestling team won five of the final six bouts to rally past No.15 Edinboro, 22-19, tonight inside McComb Fieldhouse.

“It was nice to battle back and get the dual win,†said UI head coach Tom Brands, “but we have a lot of work to do. We need to deal with tough situations better. They put together some wins, and it created some tightness and frustration. We need to go beyond that, stay aggressive, and score points.â€

Iowa (5-0) trailed 13-4 before stringing together five consecutive wins beginning at 157 pounds, where Derek St. John scored a pair of takedowns in the final period to defeat Johnny Greisheime, 13-5. The major decision pulled Iowa within five points, 13-8, heading into the intermission.

The Hawkeye rally continued at 165, where Nick Moore cut the lead to two points, 13-11, with an 11-4 decision. Mike Evans then closed the gap completely and gave Iowa the lead for good, 15-13, with a 13-5 major decision at 174.

Ethen Lofthouse extended Iowa’s lead to 18-13 with a 3-2 win at 184, and Sammy Brooks clinched the victory with an 11-0 win at 197.

Brooks and Vince Pickett wrestled through a scoreless first period before Brooks turned Pickett three times in the second for eight nearfall points. He added a takedown in the third and 3:50 riding time for the final 11-0 win.

“I would like to have had a couple scores in the first period, but overall it felt good,†said Brooks. “He was giving me his wrist and I was wrestling aggressive on top. If he was going to keep giving it to me, I was going to take it over and over again.â€

Thomas Gilman spotted Iowa a 4-0 lead with a major decision at 125 pounds. Gilman, who was making his collegiate dual debut, used five takedowns and 3:33 of riding time to top 17th-ranked Kory Mines, 12-3.

“It was nice to go out and get the early takedown,†said Gilman, who compiled 1:58 of riding time in the first period. “When there are points on the board you wrestle a lot less stiff, so I was able to get loose and gain some confidence. It was nice to get out there, wrestle hard, and score points.â€

Edinboro (0-2) won three straight bouts at 133, 141, and 149. Eighth-ranked A.J. Schopp used a third-period escape to defeat top-ranked Tony Ramos, 3-2, at 133. Second-ranked Mitchell Port pinned No. 13 Josh Dziewa at 141, and 10th-ranked Dave Habat defeated Brody Grothus, 13-5, at 149.

“We made it hard on ourselves, but we also had guys that wrestled hard," said Brands. "Battling back for the dual win is a testament to their toughness.â€

Iowa returns to the mat Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. (CT) when Buffalo visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for youth. Children five years old and younger are admitted free. Contact the UI Athletics Ticket Office for further ticket information.

Wow. I'm glad they pulled out the win, but real disappointing. I'm glad most the guys had good performances, but I hope Ramos was sick. And Lofthouse doing just enough to get the win vs. an unranked guy. Weird... they need to pick it up if they're gonna have any shot at the title this year.

Didn't see the meet. What was the deal with Tony?

Gave up a TD in the 1st and got ridden pretty good. In the 3rd, Tony rode him to get ride of the riding time, then gave up the escape. He could not get the takedown. Ramos did have one near the end of the match but they went out of bounds.

That ride Schopp put on him is the most BS stall ride. i hate it. but blame Tony for not doing enough underneath to get out or the stall call.

I wouldn't mind if every Iowa dual starts at 197 this year. I can leave/shut off tv/shut off computer etc. and I won't watch Ethan Lofthouse again until BigTens. Kudos to him for showing up at the end of the year, but he his hard to watch during every other part of the season.

Quick thoughts after watching dual.

125:
Gilmans reshot ankle pick was sick! Gilman rides very well with a lot of pressure on the upper body. This allows him to work in his legs and will open up future back point opportunities.
133:
This ride from Schopp is a stall. I do not see how anyone could see this as a offensive move. To me it should be called locked hands. This ride happens in Iowa City I would be out on the mat along with half of Carver. When it comes to on their feet the ref should of called stalling as soon as he backs up more than 4-5 steps in my opinion. Would it be enough time to get another stall call for another point is the questions. Either way my biggest issue with this match is this ride AJ put on in the 1st period. This ride and the one David Taylor uses NEEDS to be considered stalling. They are not working towards a fall it is clearly a move to just gain riding time.
141:
Didn’t get to see enough to say much about this match. But you CAN NOT get pinned at this level from simply getting to high from a ride.
149:
Have to be ready to wrestle. Brody has to lower his level a lot more if he expects to get in on more shots and to be able to defend the shot.
157:
Good match and should of got the major if he didn’t give up the TD in the 3rd. He kept going and going for the major which I love to see so no complaints. If you rewatch this match you will see the ref didn’t even look for the fall at the end. To lazy to get down on the mat. 2-3 secs flat on his back…meh
165:
Moore had some great shots in this match. I think Moore is improving every day and now have to start working on where to find bonus points from on top.
174:
Evans did what I thought he would do and dominate the match.
184:
The #2 ranked wrestler has to be able to finish that shot in the 1st period. These are the type of matches where you can fine tooth things but when you do not do anything it is hard to fine tooth your actions. Half shots won’t get you wrestling on Saturday night.
197:
Brooks thankfully has a good defense because Pickett was in on his legs deep multiple times in the first period. After the 1st it was ALLBrooks in 2nd which was impressive. Maybe Brooks should show some technique in practice to some of our upper weight classes. It was clear in this match atleast that Brooks is great on his defense and can score when ppl take bad shots on him.
HWT:
No point waste of time should of just forfeited instead of risking getting hurt. 52lbs is A LOT of weight to give up.

Thanks for the summary, Pin. I appreciate it.

I hope this close one motivates them that much more. And can somebody please light a fire under Lofthouse's arse?

Quick thoughts after watching dual.

agree with all pin - i only listened to the match on all-access.
and was really wondering why at 133 the guy Schopp on the top was allowed to lock hands when nothing was happening - grace (i think was the announcer and he said it a couple times). ironside was not announcing - so i had no idea why Tony could not get out after almost 2 mins. i have not seen this replay yet ...
and yes - 141 - just wtf were you thinking?

Dwieza didn't get pinned riding high. it was a suck back and didn't have his hooks in tight enough and Port attacked back into him. unfortunate for sure, but i have much more of a problem w/ lofthouse match than somethign like that.

tru jeva's style inheritly hurt him MIdlands coming up i suspect a mission. Watched the Ramos v Schoop match i have never seen him look back at coach(seeen him in carver 4x's) and choosing nuetral is an automatic break. Gotta get over that Tony otherwise you won't be a Champ. Believe it win it.
Go Hawks
