Hawkeye Superstitions

Anyone have any superstitions pertaining to Iowa football?

Mine has to do with In Heaven There Is No Beer...

To my understanding, it's the Iowa victory song. So, hearing it the night before/the day of the game seems like it might be jinxing it.

I saw a game replay from the 80's (the Poinsettia Bowl I believe), and the band played it after big plays during the game. I assume this is when the Hokey Pokey was more of the victory song...Also, bar band will play it the night before, so it's probably just me...

What ya got?

And also making sure I see a hawk around somewhere during the week. I swear I didn't see one the week if the Northwestern game...

I got a brand new Hawkeye shirt in 2004 and wore it for the first time the night of the "Debacle in the Desert". I have never worn that shirt on gameday again.

Always have this certain american hawkeye type flag up on game day. also always play in heaven there is no beer before the games. Always a MUST. And i always have my hawkeye beer coozie that i've had for nearly 7 years. lol

I wear my yellow Hawkeye t-shirt over my long-sleeved Rocky Balboa thermal for games. Iowa has not lost a game that I have worn it for.

I coach at a HS in Central Iowa with a HAWK mascot. We always take it as a good sign when we see a hawk perched somewhere along the way to a game (fb, bb, etc). . . . . Same goes for Iowa games! It is a fairly common experience.

Norwalk may remember this, but back in the day Marshalltown cable used to get both DesMoines (WHO 13, KDSM 17, KCCI 8 and WOI 5) and Cedar Rapids (KGAN 2and KCRG 9) and CF/Waterloo (KWWL 7) local stations...not sure if mediacom still does or not since I've been a DirecTV guy for quite a while now...but anyway, when the Hawks were playing basketball I'd start off watching them on KGAN Channel 2, because the picture was MUCH better...but if the Hawks were losing I'd have to suck it up and turn it to KDSM Fox17 in DesMoines, to spark a rally!

Worked EVERYtime...well, it sure seems like it did...now...:D

the hawkeye flag must be put up, but at halftime. this tradition started after 2008's less than impressive start but decent finish.

also, no wearing the Iowa jersey on iowa game days............ever. Caused Iowa to lose to ISU in 2001 and 2002 both. Lotta unforced turnovers in both those games, coincidence? I think not

Iowa has never played in the poinsetta bowl.

I am not superstitious, but I will never again touch a copy of Sports Illustrated with an Iowa player on the cover.
Never, ever, ever, ever again!
I highly recommend that all of you do the same.

Game day morning I have two cups of coffee, wear my #35 jersey on the outer layer, and call my buddies Ray and Dennis before pre game. When all these things are done we have only lost once, I must of screwed up the coffee and got on Bloody Marys too early

Won't happen again

One football superstition I was looking forward to getting hooked on, is "porkin' a chick in the bathroom during the game"...apparently it works wonders on road trips...but I hear it's frowned upon...

As a joke, I was given a polo from the HAWK SHOP. I wore it to the Northwestern game. I will never wear it again. It suffered the same fate as the Labron jerseys in Cleveland.
We always fly the "W" flag after victories. At home and away.

Never shower on game days for games I am attending. I showered before the UM and NU games in ought five and the NU game in ought nine (stayed in a smoking room at the casino and couldn't stand my own stench). The additional humidity that one more shower releases into the air changes the humidity balance in the stadium. Did not shower at all for any other home games between ought three and ought five and we had a nice little home winning streak going. I thought maybe I needed to shower in ought six and ought seven, so I started showering again and we kind of sucked those years. I ain't showering before a game I attend EVER again.

I also make the kid who sits by us change his hat into the stocking hat he was wearing when we stopped PSU in ought eight every time we are on defense. It looks ridiculous when it is hot outside, but it helped us block two FGs against UNI last year.

Also only drink Coors Yellow Bellies before big games. Coors Lights before regular games. Had a couple of stray Yellow Bellies before the NU game and cashed those (even though it wasn't a "Yellow Belly game") and ended up getting Ricky injured. Never again. From now on, any stray Yellow Bellies get tossed after a W. The Hawks have yet to lose a pure Yellow Belly game. We have three on the schedule next year (subject to change) so hopefully that trend continues.

But superstitions are for losers and I don't have any.

I bought a T-Shirt with "In Heaven There Is No Beer" on it, and wore it every game day this past fall. Didn't work for Northwestern or OSU, but 11 for 13 ain't bad.

I also don't watch away games in my dorm room. I watched Illinois in my room my freshman year (2008, and it was the only road game I watched in IC), and we lost a close one (for what felt like the 20th time). Now when we play on the road, I either go to my girlfriend's place at Kirkwood or go home and watch the game with my dad.

I always need to see a hawk during the week .......and always have to get Burger King Cini-Mini's when on on route to Kinnick!!!!!

I have 2 Hawk hats. I start with the all gold one and if things aren't going well I switch to the black one to match my mood and start a rally. However, I will say that I switched hats about 20 times during the PSU game last year.

Also, must be wearing a gold hawk shirt the day of game and I always wear a gold polo to work the last day of the work week.

I'm required to call my brother after every TD and turnover unless we are up by 24.

Oh, and absolutely NO donuts for breakfast on game day. Period.

When I turn the TV down to hear something else, I always turn it down to 12. This is a year round thing since Stanzi has been quarterback. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do after he graduates.
