Hawkeye men's BB current player rankings...

1. Cook
2. JBo
3. Baer
4. Moss
5. Pemsl
6. Garza- Might be reaching here but Garza should be able to impact the game immediately.
7. Wagner
8. Ellingson
9. Kreiner
10. Uhl
11. Williams
12. Nunge- On potential he'd be top 5 but needs time.
13. Dailey- He could certainly jump up this list but it's not a sure thing he'll get anymore PT this year.

in my opinion, the least valuable is our only SR. That's not to say he doesn't have value. But I see this team has all basketball priorities covered: scoring, rebounding, post defense, perimeter defense (with the exception of pg defense that needs some improvement), athleticism, experience, depth, enthusiasm, team work and camaraderie. I don't think we need to rank the plays. They know their roles and that is what is important.

TE="NikeHawk21, post: 1619361, member: 80935"]I can't say I agree with this. I don't think there is any way Ahmad gets more than 20 MPG this year unless he made some sort of exponential improvements to his game.

He can get to the rim? I assume that means off the dribble? I think I recall him doing that once his entire college career. His offensive game to date has been primarily offensive rebounding or catching it in the post and putting his head down over his left shoulder attempting for a right handed layup. I actually don't recall him scoring much in transition either for whatever reason. I think most would agree he is severely limited on the offensive end.

The problem imo is if the coaches are set on giving him more time at the wing, that is only going to bring his weaknesses (shooting, ball handling) more to the forefront.

I like Ahmad and think his defense and athleticism will get him time on the court, but I don't think there is anyway he plays more than 15 minutes per game this year.[/QUOTE

These guys have been working on their game, and I see Ahmad with huge potential for helping the team next year. It might not work out for him, but I thiink it will. If Woodbury can improve his free thows like he did so can Ahmad. He was a pretty large contributor his freshman year. He will be stronger and more experienced next year. The competition is going to be tough. If Wagner doesn't have a great year, there is going to be a player that will knock him out of the rotation.

Wagner got to the rim quite a bit last year. He didn't dribble drive from the 3 point line or anything. But he cut to the rim and received passes for wide open layups or posted up then did a quick move for a wide open layup. His problem is he missed way too many wide open layups. If he can start making those at an acceptable clip, he will play his share of minutes and probably average 3 or so more points per game than last year. He already had the moves, now he just needs the finishing touch.

Wagner is a big bruiser in the paint, and strong...although it doesn't show up in the stats or highlights...such players are valuable...are difficult to play against and wear you out...in fact, you tend to give them some space...others, who might be more "talented" tend to play soft...and don't need to be avoided...Wagner has value beyond numbers...IMHO

All this hand wringing over Wagner - I remember when our big men choices were Andre Brommer, Zach McCabe and Devon Archie.

Well that's sort of the point. I think the talent level in the front court has improved so much over the last two seasons, that it is more likely that Wagner's PT falls this year as oppose to increases from the 16MPG he played last year.

As I said I really like Ahmad, but that does not mean I'm going to ignore his limitations.

Wagner and Pemsl are both guys that I think will be interesting to watch how they develop.

I could see other guys that have a more complete game on offense pass them for playing time but I also think these guys bring some intangibles and experience that will also make it tough to keep them off the floor.

No Wagner last year - No win at Wisci. He's valuable. He has limitations no doubt, and I think others offensive games have passed him. Just not ready to completely throw dirt on him. Iowa basketball needs roll players, thankfully we have some.

I remember him getting to the rim a lot and would get fouled. A White did the same thing (w greater frequency). But then Wagner would miss the front end of the 1-1 or both FTs.

That steal with about 90 seconds to go was HUGE. If he doesn't make that play, JBo doesn't have the opportunity to make the three.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

I agree...but that play was really an aberration for Wagner and it certainly doesn't guarantee him additional minutes this year. Plus the addition of two more talented bigs will surely cut into his minutes. I expect him to get less than the 16 minutes per game he got last year.

I don't deny it may have been a once in a lifetime play. It doesn't take away from the the fact that without that play, Iowa doesn't win the game.

GO HAWKS!!!

Pretty much all I was saying. People interpreted as me knocking Wagner I guess.

Wagner is 6'7 and offensively has the skill set of a 4 or 5 man. We just brought in two guys who are 6'11 who are looking to get minutes at the 4 and 5. That's why I thought his minutes would likely go down instead of up this year, simple as that.

Which makes sense.
Wagner brings versatility to the lineup. We can go small and quick with him at the 5.

The lineup possibilities with this crew is outstanding.

For as versatile as Wagner is on defense, due to his lack of size he struggles defending opposing 5 men. As I have stated many times when he started alongside Cook last year, Cook was tasked with guarding the opposing teams 5, where he struggled and often got into foul trouble. There really isn't a lineup where I would consider Wagner the 5 man (unless we went extremely small with Baer at the 4)

Enter Garza, who at 6'11 and with some bulk appears on paper to be a more natural 5. This should allow Cook and Pemsl for that matter to spend more time at their natural 4 spot. An emerging Kriener and Nunge murky the waters even further.

That is why you are hearing directly from Wagner even, that he is looking to develop his game and spend time on the wing. That is the path of least resistance at this point.

While I remain skeptical that his offensive game will develop enough to spend big minutes on the wing, I've come around to the idea of him playing at the 3 for 10-15 minutes a game. His defensive versatility allows him to guard 2-4 spots. I've actually mentioned in other threads that the idea of him starting at the 3 isn't a bad one, as our starting 5 won't be lacking for scoring and Baer excels as the 6th man. That's basically where I am at with Ahmad.

Wagner is obviously a talented guy. If his minutes diminish this year its because Iowa is loaded. Hopefully, he has been working on his free throws. Fran definitely doesn't have a problem with his abilities.
