Non-con isn't great and will depend largely on what ISU looks like then. The conference schedule is a bear in '20.

Did I miss the memo, I thought Delaney banned B1G schools from scheduling FCS opponents past 2018.

I think it's great they rolled it back - 1. The fortune that lower FBS schools started charging to come visit a power 5. Shrink the market, the price goes up. 2. Other conferences do it religiously 3. I'd rather that $$ went to UNI then UAB or Louisiana Laffayette 4. Laugh all you want at UNI - they are a better football program then half of the bottom dweller FBS teams.

Clearly this is a political move and it is also part of the overall strategy. Iowa knows that they are rarely a national contender - this scheduling does not matter - and they might as well keep $ in the state and schedule a Win.

1 thing. Let's copy the SEC and have 2nd to last day in season to be Cup Cake Saturday.

In 2020, 11 of 14 SEC schools have already scheduled an FCS team. So, I guess none of them have National Title hopes in 2020 either. Simply put, with 9 conference schedule - Power 5 teams don't need to schedule murderer's row OOC's. Iowa is always shaky in September, this makes great sense to me.

I don't know if anyone has ever asked or suggested this, but why not try a playing a game...neutral site, say like Arrowhead Stadium or St. Louis, etc.)... against a comparable Power 5 conference team (Texas A & M, Ole Miss, North Carolina State, Miami [NOT Ohio], Louisville, Utah, Colorado - you get the picture)... that would garner both fan interest as well as a non-cupcake or FCS team...and could be a getaway for fans to travel to that can't make it to Iowa City all the time?

Because Iowa is already playing a power 5 school series with a home and away game with ISU. If they add another - that would mean Iowa is essentially play 11 games against P5 schools a year. As soon as everyone else starts doing that, then I think Iowa should too.

Nothing new here - but since our "rivalry" game is with a school not in the conference, Iowa is not like a lot of other schools that can schedule a decent Power 5 school each year. In general, those other schools put just one tough Power 5 school on the schedule and a couple of cup cakes; they pick up their rival in a conference game. Playing a couple of cup cakes each year is not an exclusive Iowa thing, by any stretch - most do. Give you one relevant example - Wisconsin. Look at who they've played non-conference over the years. It's hardly hurt their standing in the eyes of many. Iowa is forced to play ISU, which becomes their Power 5 non-conference game - it's just that ISU hasn't been a very good team over the years. Playing two Power 5 teams each year is not that common. Add in that Iowa plays 9 conference games now and it makes it even less likely there will be another Power 5 team added to Iowa's schedule.

People would probably not complain as much if every year instead of ISU, Iowa played a top SEC, Pac 12 or Big 12 school and two easier games.

Two solutions - drop ISU (yeah, right) or hope ISU gets a lot better (No thank you) - lead to the conclusion that nothing different will be done in the foreseeable future as far as scheduling. In fact, I would suspect ISU getting a lot better would be a greater impetus to them being dropped from the schedule.

This is Fran.

I never want to hear about the bball non con ever again.

See footballs underwhelming or embarrassing results against WMU Ball St Ark St UNI NIU and to cap off Gary's great coup..schedule your alma mater, give them a big check and then have them humiliate you nationally in Kinnick.

Genius

With teams like Penn State and Michigan on the rise and teams like Wisc, OSU, and MSU always good, having a few cupcakes in the non-conference is a good thing. It doesn't matter who you beat...it just matters that you win games. Ask the University of Washington, who thus far has not played a top 50 opponent and is ranked in the top 5.

Well here's to continuing to perpetuate a narrative about our weak non-con scheduling. Cheers... How long till Cowherd has that put in front of him to jab Iowa fans with nationally?
