Hawkeye Add UNI to '20 Schedule

UI Release:

IOWA COMPLETES 2020 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - The University of Iowa has added a home date with Northern Iowa to complete its 2020 football schedule. The Hawkeyes and Panthers will open the season Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, in Kinnick Stadium.

With the addition of Northern Iowa (UNI), Iowa has also announced the movement of the 2020 nonconference game against Northern Illinois (NIU) from Sept. 5 to Sept. 26, also at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes also host Iowa State on Sept. 12, as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa opens Big Ten play at Minnesota on Sept. 19, 2020.

Both Northern Illinois (Sept. 1) and Northern Iowa (Sept. 15) are also on Iowa’s 2018 nonconference schedule. Iowa holds a 16-1 series advantage over Northern Iowa, including a 31-23 decision in 2014 in the most recent meeting. The Hawkeyes lead the series with Northern Illinois 8-1, with NIU winning 30-27 in 2013 when the teams last met.

Iowa’s football schedules through 2020 are now complete. The Hawkeyes will host four Big Ten Conference games in both 2018 and 2020, along with the three nonconference dates. Iowa’s Big Ten Conference schedule, through 2021, was announced in September.

If still walking this planet in 2020 and circumstances allow, gonna take the week vaca to catch Ohio State and Penn State games on the road and just stay in Ohio and Pennsylvania in between, catch Gettysburg and check out old family history stuff around there. Only downside is we will likely be breaking in a new QB that year so games in those locations might be rough.

I think it's great they rolled it back - 1. The fortune that lower FBS schools started charging to come visit a power 5. Shrink the market, the price goes up. 2. Other conferences do it religiously 3. I'd rather that $$ went to UNI then UAB or Louisiana Laffayette 4. Laugh all you want at UNI - they are a better football program then half of the bottom dweller FBS teams.

Agree. Will allow for a fuller stadium as well. Probably a kids game also.

I just feel don't like the line of thinking that just because other schools/conferences are doing things one way that we have to do it too. There's no rule saying we have to schedule UNI is there? Iowa is under no obligation to 'help' them out by paying them to come play a game. Especially when there's no upside to Iowa for it. None. I can care less about UNI. Or what the SEC does in comparison. I just don't. I care about Iowa putting together a schedule that will endear themselves to winning the West and getting to the playoffs. A few years back when they started the playoffs I thought that by doing so they gave schools a new goal to reach. By scheduling UNI and FCS schools when your an Iowa your basically not trying in my eyes... The Bamas of the world can do what they want and schedule an FCS school right in the middle of their season and it won't hurt them because they are really really good and it don't matter. Iowa is always trying to climb uphill to get there. Scheduling ISU as your strongest non-con game is embarrassing and if I had my way both discontinuing playing them and FCS schools would be off the table. It's better to try and fail then to succeed at not trying.

Iowa doesn't need to do what everyone else is doing, no - but why would they? Why do they need to? Please let me know. Why do they have to play 11 P5 teams when hardly anyone else does? SEC plays 9 most years. Why does Iowa need to be different in that regards? What advantage does it give them? If Iowa goes undefeated in any season, they will make the playoff. If they have 1 loss, chances are they get compared to another school that ALSO played an FCS team as well. I want a good reason they need to schedule differently, then I will listen.

Iowa Completes 2020 Schedule... in the same way that throwing chips on a plate competes a meal.

Here's a look at all of the B1G programs' non-con games against Power 5 schools for the next three seasons:

This right here is the perfect rationale for making the ISU series every other year. I would love to travel to one of the OOC games that other teams schedule: Arizona, Colorado, Notre Dame, etc. Travelling to Ames? Not so much...

Because Iowa isn't OSU. Iowa isn't Bama or Clemson. How do you expect Iowa to reach their level? We just saw how going undefeated through our regular season didn't even remotely change the national perception of us. And why was that? Because they said our schedule was weak. If your at the top of the mountain you have the flexibility to do whatever you want just about. So your perfectly ok with ISU being the marquee non con opponent on our schedule for the forseeable future? Along with playing UNI? Why perpetuate a narrative that holds us back from not only accomplishing goals on the field but all the dominos that go with it in recruiting etc? What we are doing is treading water without a paddle and trying to swim up a waterfall. You can't expect to get ahead by following the crowd and doing the bare minimum. That's lazy and not trying. I'd rather go 7-6 or 8-5 by playing a challenging schedule with the chance of raising our profile and winning it all as opposed to what they are doing. But that's just me

The good reason is that it adds a game for the fans to be excited about. Most fans aren't asking for Alabama on the schedule instead of UNI. Most fans that don't like seeing UNI on the schedule, including myself, would be happy to see a Missouri (who is bad this year) or NC State (who is good this year) type of programs on the schedule instead of UNI and Northern Illinois. I do not object to playing UNI OR Northern Illinois in a given year. I object to playing UNI AND Northern Illinois in the same year.
Nothing says the Hawkeyes need to play 11 P5 teams. Iowa already has a schedule that has 10 such games on the schedule every year. But not all P5 teams are created equal. Iowa State might have their best team they've had in quite awhile this season, but in most years they are a P5 team only by association (sorry Cyclones). Not to mention that Iowa does play in the weaker division of the Big 10. So to me, the schedule regarding the P5 teams we play in most years is manageable. Seeking an additional challenge wouldn't damage the program and would create another game to look forward to as a fan.
To me, the best and really only argument for scheduling both UNI and Northern Illinois in the same year is that you know you are getting 2 home games worth of revenue.

Yeah I mean look....we could be like Florida State this year!!! ..............

I would be fine with the UNI game if we did a rotation. Since we our stuck having to play Iowa State, why can't we have a round robin. One year we play Iowa State (and no UNI), the next year we play UNI (and no Iowa State), the following year UNI and Iowa State can play each other so that we don't play either of them. At least we would fill the State's obligation of playing one of these schools 2 out of 3 years but then it opens our schedule up to actually play a school that will excite the fans and we can have a home and home game with that school (Mizzo, Kansas State, anyone but Iowa State).
