Has Basabe committed to Iowa?

Looks like sort of a Solomon's decision for Caff and his former assistant -- I'll take Basabe, you keep Burdine. Although I'm sure Caff probably also talked to Basabe about his Siena commitment.

Wouldn't expect the Reading, PA paper to have the news right other than as to the kid the article is about. If the albany paper had reported a commitment, I might buy it.

Like everyone else, I'm expecting him to sign with us, but trying not to count on anything relating to Iowa basketball until it actually happens. :)

Interesting. Fran told Burdine to honor his commitment to Siena but not so with Basabe.

It's alright by me cause it's likely he feels Basabe is a better player than Burdine and this isn't T-ball or anything.

No coach should try to poach the entire class from his previous school. I am sure he maintains a pretty good relationship with the coaching staff that remained behind. Coach Caff recommended that Burdine stayed at Siena, he may have said the same thing to Basabe.

This. Nobody knows whether or not Coach advised Basabe to stay at Sienna, and Basabe decided to come here anyway.

Pretty much as soon as FM was hired Basabe said he was told he could come to Iowa if he wanted. Clearly FM did not tell him to honor his commitment. Don't know where people gotthis idea that good coaches leave their recruits behind. Actually, a lot of the successful guys bring their best players with them.

Caar, that is true but you never know what was said behind closed doors. Obviously Caff is looking to bring Basabe over but he would have really been sticking his former employer, and coaches, had he also went after Burdine. Basabe is a huge get for Caff especially with Larson backing out of his LOI and Fuller leaving. But with Iowa already with players like Gatens and May on the roster a 6'5 Burdine may struggle to see playing time at Iowa and would be a better player for Siena.

I agree. I would say Burdine staying had more to do with how well FM thought he fit at Iowa rather than some altruistic act toward one's former employer.

who is to say that Burdine doesn't come in and is better than May? He isn't coming, but just saying that May and Gatens still have to fight for their spot as hard as anyone else..May moreso than Gatens obviously.

I hope Gatens does have to fight for his spot. I would love to see Marble come in and really push Matt. I can't imagine anything better for Matt, but to be in a position where he has to work hard for minutes and play within his set of skills. He needs to just be a player on the team for a while.

But do you really want to commit another scholarship to someone that is 6'5 when Iowa could really use another point and a big? It is possible that Burdine could push May and Gatens but so could Marble (another 6'5 player). But I would rather see them go after someone come in and replace Fuller, push Cully, and make Cougill/Brommer work for playing time. IF (big if) Brust still ends up at Iowa now you have another player that can push for playing time at the SG position.

There's a reason Francis remained on staff at Siena after Fran was hired.
