Harrison Barnes to decide today

Wasn't sure which forum to put this is.

So Barnes will most likely declare for the NBA draft today. Wish he'd stay but who can blame him. That's not the point of this thread however.

I think Harrison Barnes is a great example of why sometimes (not always) it's better to be a big fish in a small pond. Harrison averaged 17.4 pts and 5 rebs this year, not bad numbers by any stretch of the imagination. Yet I'm seeing UNC fans calling him the biggest disappointment in UNC history. I'll admit this is quite a guess, and really no way to ever prove this, but if he had gone to ISU he'd be an icon there.

Just my .02

When you come in as a pre-season All American before every playing a second of college ball the expectations are pretty high. I think UNC is a bit overrated as they have good players, but they are not all great athletes like UK has. Some of those guys never reached the heights they were expected to, which is unfortunate cause they are all good players. I think HB is a really good player and would have loved to see him play at ISU or Iowa, but I don't think he would've stayed for the second year at either of those institutions.

He certainly didn't need to go to UNC to elevate his draft status, if that is what he had in mind, when he made his decision to go there. Maybe instead of being a big fish in a small pond, he thought he'd just be in a fishbowl if he stayed in Ames.

He should have left last season. It would be a mistake for him to stay another year as his draft position will slip.

This is what happens when you care more about your "brand" than improving as a basketball player. Harrison is no better now than he was coming out of high school. He would have been better served just going straight to the NBA and pocketing that coin 2 years earlier.

This whole "sports is a business" mantra I keep hearing is what is sucking the life out of sports in general starting at the youth level and working all the way up to the college level. Whether it's kids starting AAU in 3rd grade, posting stupid YouTube videos when they're in middle school/high school, having these a$$inine announcement press conferences their senior year, trying to market their brand in college, etc, etc....it's just downright pathetic. Of course, as has been the case for awhile now....it's not the kids that have changed, it's the parents/adults.

I wouldn't be shocked if he stays. Unless he's holding a press conference, saying you're going to decide today doesn't rule out staying put.

Do you hold a press conference to announce that you are staying in school? Just asking.

Matt Leinart, Andrew Luck and Matt Barkley are 3 that I can think of that held one to announce they were coming back....and Im sure there have been a few others.

It isnt unheard of to have a PC to announce you are returning.

I don't blame any of the current sophomores (Perry Jones III, Terrance Jones, Harrison Barnes, Jared Sullinger, etc.) that elected to stay in school for this season. The NBA was at serious risk of not having a season this year. It was a major risk to go pro last year. Hindsight says that a couple of those guys *should* have gone pro, but in reality, they didn't make bad choices by staying in school.

The Carolina people I'm hearing from say he's definitely gone. I thought there might be a chance he stays as well.

I think there's a good chance Hoiberg gets him to come to ISU if he's coach. call it a hunch.

Agree. Hoiberg would have hooked him.

On a side note anybody remember his announcement press conference? He specifically made a plea to invite the people of Ames to come so they showed up and packed the gym. However most of those people read too much into the invite as they thought Barnes was going to announce ISU. When Ol' Roy popped up on the screen via Skype needless to say, most of the audience was quite ******.

Only room for one Iowan on NCs team at a time. Kansas needed 2 but not NC. He has to go. His stock has fallen and risking another year of possible injury doesn't seem like a good idea. He won't be a top 5 pick next yr if he'd stay..... Time to cash in his winning lotto ticket.
