Hansen commentary: Coker case shows university a closed society

So you can't really answer what you want them to do, except that they should do something that doesn't make you upset.

I want them to be more transparent, especially when it comes to an issue like this. That's what they should do. Government entities are never transparent, so I don't actually expect them to be, but that doesn't mean they're in the right by remaining secretive.

Transparent how?

You realize that if a parent calls up, someone working in the registrar's office can't tell that parent why (or even IF) their son/daughter has been kicked out of school. Even if the parent is paying every dime of tuition.

They're not allowed to give that information to a parent who's footing the bill, but you expect them to release that information to the media?

1. We aren't talking about Coker's academic standing here.
2. Even if we were, he signed the waiver allowing the university to release academic information (just like most athletes do).

That's a parenting issue, nothing more, nothing less.

Come on. At least try.

There is no answer he can make and I think he sees this (and I'm not attacking you TM, you are a good poster, but Iowa can't win here)…………the Truth is I don’t really care to know. But I’m unusual I know. They or should I say “these†universities and Big business can’t win. Everyone wants to know what they’re doing, and their employees want their right to privacy………

The reality of this situation is we all want to know what everyone else is doing, but we don’t want them to no squat about us. I’ve actually taken to enjoying the anxt of those who want to know “everythingâ€â€¦..honestly this stuff can be critiqued 10 ways to Sunday and everyone will have an opinion….why tell anyone anything. It’s not going to help and those that think it will are lying to themselves.

If I was in charge I’d be as surly as hell. No one would want to come to my press conference. For every stupid question I got asked I’d fire one right back…..

Dwayne addressed hogeye, not me.

But demanding to know how/why the university handled this the way they did, given its proven ineptitude in this area, is a fair question (and one that should be answered). Iowa can't win here, but that's their problem. The public's right to know trumps the university's image in this case. We don't need to know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. But this is the type of case that should have the details brought out into the light of day.

I disagree, but quite frankly I don't want people in my business nor do I want ion theirs. And from what I see the “unspoken†majority is more like me. We act like its Iowa, but its everywhere. Iowa isn’t unusual, but we are nosey. We want to know because we want to critique what they did. Because that’s how people are….unless of course the shoe is on the other foot.

I don’t need to know, nor does anyone else….And if they did….they would. Pretty cut and dried actually

Just because it's everywhere doesn't make it right. If this isn't a case where the details should be brought out, then what's the point of true journalism? We're not talking about the Tiger/ESPN/tabloid saga here. I'm not demanding to know if (or how often) Coker cheated on his girlfriend. I want to know why he was allowed to play during the investigation, and then suddenly was suspended for the bowl game.

Universities/athletic departments will damn near never tell the public anything. Assuming they will just because they need to is pretty naive. They want to keep their a**es covered above all else. It's human nature, but it's still wrong.

The public has no right to know anything, tm.

He's obviously biased on the subject considering he's a journalism major.

Unless Coker gives them the ok, they're in a bind on what they can say. That doesn't mean the media has to just "give Iowa the benefit of doubt" but rather find another source to use to get their information.

Seriously, if you can't see the difference between getting a player to sign off on the release of good information vs bad information, then there is really no point in arguing with you.

That’s fine....but I don't want to know and what’s more to the Truth is I don't want you or anyone else to either. Now I’m not trying to be a jerk and if this makes me one I do apologize, but I have honest intentions. I don’t care to hear you or Jim or Bob or any other Internet jockey scrutinize the decision of people who are in the line of fire. It doesn’t do me, you or anyone else ANY good…..

This isn’t PSU and to compare it (cutting those who would off at the pass) but if we must go there, try this on………………..

As we are finding out there are likely 100’s of people who knew and did NOTHING…..see people don’t want to know so they can “fix” it….they want to know so they can point fingers and judge.

So I say again….I hope they DON’T tell anyone. I’m tired of the judgmental; we need to know so we can lambaste you America we now call home.

There are some things people don't want to know. That doesn't mean they don't need to know it. Kind of a tough love deal. You think the world would be better off if no one knew about Sandusky? Of course not. It's uncomfortable, it's ugly, but things like that HAVE to be brought to the light of day.

Actually TM, I don’t know how old you are and as I said you’re a good poster. But I’m 41, have 4 kids with 1 on the way and took the Lord as my Savior 12 years ago. I get it, I do, and I get the fickleness of life! But people want to read salacious crap, but very damn few want to do anything about. You no what’s tragic, not PSU, not Joe Pa, not even the seeming cowardice of Mike McQueary to stopping such a horrendous act. ITS THAT WE STAND IN JUDGEMENT OF THEM, WHEN 100’s OF PEOPLE LOOKED THE OTHER WAY. Would of you……?!?!

People get on the Internet and talk tough, yet they are the same ones covering their eyes……today on the way to work I listened to a radio broadcast about a child brothel in Spain that took years to close. This stuff is happening everywhere and what are we doing about?! I know……. we are getting on message boards and pointing fingers……..

Yeah we need to know alright….but I guess that’s all we need. Sorry dude, but you cruised into a buzz saw. If you want to know, figure it out, and then DO something about it!!!!

Don't misunderstand my response. You and I agree on the topic. The University doesn't have any business releasing private information to the public.

I was simply commenting on the aspect of the parents. They don't need to contact the school and get access this information in order to make a decision on funding their kids schooling.

My comment was supporting your argument, but clearly your emotions got a hold of you.

My bad. With all the truly uninformed comments about this issue, it's hard to know what to make of a vague post such as yours.

I'm not sure my post has already been discussed on this thread because I
can't force myself to read through all the ideology, but...

From what I can remember being pertinent from the Hansen article in the DSM Register, all Iowa athletes are asked on a questionnaire which 'facts' about said athlete can be revealed by the university. This could, IMO, be considered a partial waiver to the law that attempts to keep a student's records private.

In Coker's case, I believe he checked grades and major.

EDIT: Oops OO44, I read the link in your OP and realized Coker checked major and academic standing.

If someone wanted to find out Coker's grades for research to an article as Hansen had, Coker would need to sign a waiver for his grades to be made public.

I think everyone pretty much understands this. The problem with Hansen's article is what is being discussed. That being that his premise is flawed:

How so? By hiding behind a dark piece of federal legislation called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which is wielded by universities to keep from disclosing information about faculty or student conduct.

FERPA isn't a dark, sinister piece of legislation designed for public universities to hide behind. It's a piece of legislation designed to protect the individual right of the student athlete and Hansen is just crying over the fact that he can't get the dirt.

If anything, this scumbag and others that make a living off of digging into peoples private matters is probably one of the best arguments in support of FERPA.
