Half Full or Half Empty?

I wish he would commit early and get the ball rolling. Didn't Horner commit when he was a sophomore or something? Another good thing about him committing early is that he could start talking to Gessel and Paige about joining him like Christensen did that one year we had all those FB recruits.

Stormin, what are your feelings on Gessel and Paige committing to Iowa?
I'd like to think Paige would stay home and help bring Iowa back, but he's going to have (and already has) a lot of prestigious programs courting him. I think Iowa has a better chance to get Paige than Iowa State did getting Barnes, but I don't know what % that would be if I had to put a number on it.

I don't know that the Hawks get both Gesell and Paige. Would be very surprised, but happy if Iowa did.

I think Iowa has a great shot with both Gessell and Woodbury. I would be shocked, utterly shocked if Paige went to Iowa and I actually did have a source on this one.

I think you're right about Paige, Stormin. From the sounds of it Paige has really developed a great relationship with the staff and they are at all his events. He really respects coach and the involvement he has put into scouting him.

Regarding Mike Gesell, don't count on him coming to Iowa. I play league ball (not AAU, just guys league) with his brother-in-law and he said he likes the Iowa staff (Lick never recruited him) but doesn't like where the program is at and wants to play for a team already rebuilt - not rebuilding for 2-4 years - and has talent around in place. So when I asked him who was recruiting him and where he was leaning he said that Nebraska is on his list mainly for in-state respect (they've been after him for 5 years) but is a long shot, Creighton (before Altman left but McDermott has been going hard for him) because they are already a competitor and Iowa State. He said he loves Fred Hoiberg and what he can do for him and the talent is already in place to succeed.

Pretty interseting stuff from him but that could change...I HOPE it changes if McCaffery can prove the program is in good hands this season. But McCaffery needs to get a playmaker(s) so these other kids can get excited about the future. Gesell and I've even read Paige's comments about not wanting to be the only one. They want to other playmakers around them.

As I look at the team Iowa has to put on the floor this season, I think it's a team that can generate some optimism and excitment among the fan base. We have some under rated athletisism, we have experience and we have a nice sophmore class (that most importantly is no longer freshmen). I like this incoming class and am hopefull that 2 or 3 of them can make a little noise.

I'm very interested to see what Fran and staff can so with this group. If I'm not sure any of us really even know what the guys we have now capable of once the reigns are taken off and they are allowed to run and have some fun again.

I guess what I'm saying is that, I think we have a little more riht now than most do. My glass is half full that once the ball is thrown up for the season we will start to all see some sparks. Maybe not a blazing fire right away but some real sparks.

I will put my bottom dollar on the fact that Eric May will become a legit playmaker at this level. I'm hoping that maybe we have another.

It seems to me that if the players like everything about the university such as academics and the social offerings and their only concern left is playing with quality players, then one of them needs to take a chance to attract more talent. I may be all wet on this one but if the only drawback one of these local kids sees is a lack of talent and success recently, shouldn't they believe that with them jumping on board they could create some momentum? To me it seems a couple of top 50-100 kids such as Paige, Woodbury and Gessell would definitely attract more talent. Also they would be playing with White and Oglesby who are both top 150-200 guys who will have been in the system for a year. I guess we just need one guy to take a chance and hope it works to our favor in building some momentum. I see this as a glass half full situation because I believe one of these local players will make the leap, and I hope it is sooner rather than later. New style of play, new facilities on the way, hopefully a new attitude and resurgence of success both on the floor in recruiting.

I agree. If one commits he can start working on the others. From what people are saying Woodbury is our best shot. If Fran can get him to commit early it would be a good start. We just need one to take a chance and then the rest could follow. It just takes one.

What does your source have to say about Paige then? I wouldn't be shocked if he chose Iowa, but I wouldn't be shocked if he left either. We'll see how the recruitment goes I guess.

Half full. I have seen nothing to this point that indicates Fran is flash in the pan. His steps to date indicate a thought process, getting input from others around the program, looking at good kids, not just athletes, solid staff additions, looking at the long-term and no panic.

I believe he understands people ultimately want to feel part of the program again and to see change and progress. For some that is big change the first game, for most others it is game by game and playing with class. I see all kinds of similarity to Pelini / Callahan change with Nebraska football. Callahan is Nebby's Lick, only worse. Ask anyone.

It is a process, and how he and the staff slowly go about it that counts. I think he will do it his way and with confidence. Just my guess.
