Guys, who is in the mood for some fun? Let's guess who we get in Feb.

I have to say the amount of LBs we have pursued and landed in recent years makes me question if Iowa is making the switch to a base 4-2-5. Niemann and Colbert got big time PT this year as underclassmen. In 2018 we brought in McDonald and Doyle and a couple others. This year we have Jestin Jacobs, Campbell, Jeudy, and are now pursuing others.

As to you mentioned yesterday Campbell and potentially Doyle could slide down to end, but that’s still a glutton of LBs who would be fighting over 2 spots on the majority of downs if we were going to the 4-2-5.

My guess fwiw is that Iowa sticks with a base 4-3 on early downs while still being multiple and employing 4-2-5 or nickel type looks on passing downs or against spread looks.
I think that was the case to begin with. They adopted it to tailor to Hooker's exceptional ability and physicality for a DB rather than schemed it long term. I imagine if we find another player that can fill the same role it comes back as a main package rather than a situational look, but to bank on finding guy's of Hooker's caliber and skillset regularly would be unsustainable.

Spot on. I tried having that discussion with some people but they were convinced Iowa was 4-2-5 only now.

The thing I’m still wondering about was if Iowa was even a noticeabley better defensive unit in the games they played 4-2-5? They got shredded by Purdue, and Nebraska was moving it pretty good against us as well. The reason we couldn’t get off the field against UW had nothing to do with playing the 4-3 and everything to do with that fact that their offensive line was outplaying our vaunted defensive line.

I’m a huge proponent of getting an extra DB out there when the offense is presenting a more spread passing look, but I have no issue with the 4-3 in other situations. I actually think our LB athleticism should be very good in the coming years.

Time for a generalized update.

Don't know much about him other than he is a 2-sport athlete and KF has shown a preference for all-around athletes. Don't know if he has been offered but has apparently enjoyed an in-home with Kirk.

All right the signing period has come and gone, let's see what we have.

We HAD 20 guys and they represent lots of potential. We added 3 guys. The 2018 class also had 23 signees. IIRC RH said Kirk expects to add at least one more to this class sometime before August.

1) Jermari Harris: Multiple non-P5 offers. ESPN graded him a 73 with 3 stars. Same numbers as Shadrick Byrd. The class now includes 2 safeties and 2 CBs. Harris is the higher rated CB (according to ESPN), and considering Turner and Creamer are leaving his addition makes sense, tho I don't expect him to contribute much in 2019 primarily because the position is well stocked.
2) Michael Sleep-Dalton: Offers from the B10/P12 and has proven he can start at this level. Plus his name will get him on some "All-Name" teams next fall. Not sure how important that is but it certainly isn't a negative. Nice addition.
3) TJ McCall: ESPN lists Iowa as his only offer. He is a late bloomer and I think I read he's relatively new to football. ESPN listed this class with 4 DEs before he came aboard so I'm not sure what the strategy is here? He feels like a diamond, but what Iowa really needed was a diamond at the WR position.

Overall a good, not great, class that continues Iowa's upward recruiting momentum. I'm expecting Kirk to find another WR somewhere. Think - Groeneweg upgraded.

2019 should be better than 2018 even considering the talent we lose. Can't wait.

My unreasonable hopes:

Nixon returns in the greatest possible acquisition the Hawks could make between now and the season. DT rotation of Lattimore/Nixon (1s) and Reiff/Shannon (2s) is stout.

Iowa gets the grad transfer DE from Central Michigan, Mike Danna (team MVP last year, led team with 15 TFL). He solidifies DE depth, and plays a key role as a 3rd down pass-rusher (with Gholston sliding in to DT, like last season).
