Great Iowa win

Hill best game of season
We rush for 179
Defense was great like always
Good offensive execution, blocking, pass protection, catching the ball
Third down conversions 9-18
Time of possession, 38 minutes

Real solid game all around

An average to slightly above average offense like the Hawks showed yesterday to go along with an elite defense and mostly elite special teams, means Iowa is a very good team.

Still way too many negative plays on offense but we played competent football all day. It looked like good players who were well coached.

I don’t need to have a 60 point air raid offense, today is all I need. Make the game not so damn boring.

Great effort all around. Felt like a masterclass for Football. Progress displayed coaches, players. Hard work and patience rewarded. Now do it again, with additional progress. Be so progressive Beth, lots of people question the OC announcement made mid season.

I think they only had a handful of negative yard plays. At one point in the second half they put up a graphic showing just 2 of them. I think they had a few after that. Only one sack and that mishandled snap (which may have cost them 4), a couple of blown up run plays....and that reverse(? not sure what it was) with Ragaini.

Edit: the sack didn't count. Forgot about the holding call on Rutgers.

Completely agree.
I would add that Brian deserves some credit as well. He got players isolated and into position to make plays.

Our best game of the season. If we keep growing it will be great. If we stay the same it will be great. Do not regress.

It sure was a satisfying win.
I mean when was the last offensive touchdown?
It looked like Iowa football. Decent running.
Bootlegs and rollouts.
Hitting a TE in the seam for a big play.
Solid offensive line giving up like one sack and creating some initial holes for the backs.
And stifling D.

Hill is definitely improving. Certainly from the stats and the sniff test over the last 2 games. Maybe that's what BrIan needed? A healthy QB who was comfortable in the system? I'm still going to argue, you have to have a #2 who is "readier' than that. If Hill does what Stanzi did and essentially improve every game (on the whole), he could be an acceptable Iowa QB.

Maybe the shakeup with some fresh blood on the o-line? (Was there some fresh blood? seemed like there might be from posts this week)

And while we all thought Rutgers was maybe kind of a deal, they're still Rutgers. They only beat teams we beat. And a lot of teams have "hung with" OSU. Wasn't Wisconsin tied at the half?

Course, they also left quite a few points on the table. The INT...the mishandled snap...and the ending series.

Also, nice to see a lot of Petras in the background on the TV. And that pic of Hill and Petras hugging that circulated yesterday was very satisfying on so many levels.

Yes...he basically did what he's supposed to do.
And did it well. Again, I'm not gonna fall into the trap of "did we make a mistake?" No. No, we didn't. The data over the years is very clear on this.

I'm done slamming on him, because after this season, he's moot. And I will credit him for today. But, that means I'll also credit him for yesterday and all the days before.

hasn’t been great couple of weeks for those who wanted this whole thing torn down, gutted out and losses to stack up to get their way.

Y’all know who you are. If you give up on everything this easily you get what ya have coming to ya, but it’s not very Iowa Hawkeye like.

What’s happening at WI changing who they are, could set them back for some time. But hey, now they got an up to date offense.

Ya reap what ya sow but like I’ve been saying on here for 2 decades, enjoy the wins now, it’s not always going to be like this. We’re in one of the best stretches of football our program will ever go through. Instead of burning it down, try and not be a puke and enjoy what this team does every season, win. Iowa football is a something to be proud about

I agree about BF. The original post (which was spot on) stated that "Good offensive execution, blocking, pass protection, catching the ball" were keys to our win. I think execution has been a problem the past 2 years, which has been the main factor in the bad offense. Also, I think having such a great defense is a factor in that. Don't let the offense screw this up and play the field position game if we need to (which I agree with). I don't care that he's gone, but it's not all on Brian (not saying you did or didn't say this, even though I quoted you, I just agreed with your entire post).

Very well said. Give credit where it's due.

Now, can the Hawks do this 2 weeks in a row, 3 weeks in row?

Plus, Caleb Brown gives Iowa a whole new look on offense. Now, let's hope his attitude stays positive and KF doesn't f-up the depth chart if Vines is healthy.

what is the story with Caleb Brown? Anyone know facts about why his as been absent prior to last 2 weeks?

I only know that Brown said in an interview last week that he had to own his mistakes and make a better effort. I foresee him getting much more action this week. Need to keep the playmakers on the field.

We can try to figure out why Iowa's offense looked so much better yesterday, but watching things closely while at Kinnick, there were several very obvious reasons -- one of them quite bafflng:
1) Rutgers came in with a Defensive reputation of bringing extra guys and bringing a lot of pressure. Yesterday, they rarely brought extra guys to the LOS, and seemed completely content to run a very Iowa-like 4 DLinemen look. Completely baffling, given how Iowa's Oline and Hill have struggled vs pressure. On Iowa's pass plays, Rutgers rarely -- if ever -- outnumbered Iowa at the LOS. It was almost always 4 DLinemen vs 5 Iowa OLinemen. Hill had FAR more time in the pocket than in most games, and it made a difference. While watching the Hawkeye offense go up and down the field (relatively speaking), this immediately reminded me of the Ohio St. game at Kinnick where Urban Meyer thought they could stifle Iowa's offense by simply running their base D, and refused to change. Rutgers did the same. When Schiano said in his postgame presser they needed to do a better job of coaching, I suspect this was on his mind;
2) # of plays run. Iowa ran 77 offensive plays, Rutgers 40. That's a staggering difference. It was no surprise that Iowa's offense had their way in the 4th quarter, given that stat, and Schiano admitted as much in his postgame presser -- said their Defense simply got wore down;
3) Penalties. Rutgers' offense was really hurt by the 5-6 illegal procedure penalties caused by the Kinnick crowd. As Schiano said after the game, their offense isn't built to overcome penalties, even 5 yd penalties. (Sound familiar?!) Several of those 3rd and 2s went from likely successful running 1st downs to unsuccessful passes -- huge for a run team like Rutgers.
The key to beating this Iowa team remains the same: bring lots of Defensive pressure, don't turn the ball over yourself, and don't have self-inflicted penalties.
