Great Iowa win

I imagine brian saying. "Dad, I'm just going to call this game the way I want, OK?" Just leave me to the game plan..let me have the last 3 games.

Careful kirk probably thought going 5 wide was fraught with risk and doom. He learned that there is an upside to trying something new. Or not. More likely he observed, was pleased but didn't learn anything.

Something else that happened is we had NO 3 and outs and NO penalties.
If ever there's a recipe to win a game it's to do that. Wish we coulda done it without a turnover too but thankfully the one we had didn't hurt. (besides us not getting any pts on that possession). But I mean that's coaching right there. The no penalties in todays ball is unreal. Most games have multiple flags being thrown every damn possession. Backup QB backup TEs backup OLmen all over the place throughout the game Logan Jones only played the first series so we had a backup center much of the game. The no penalties thing in the context of what all they have going on is extremely impressive.

And the no 3 and outs part. I mean holy crap. In the 1st half Rutgers was winning the field position battle some. They punted us down inside the 15 and 10 yrd line a few times. But we got at least 1 first down and punted it back so they didn't end up in great field position. Huge huge huge part of how that game went.

Still way too many negative plays on offense but we played competent football all day. It looked like good players who were well coached.

I don’t need to have a 60 point air raid offense, today is all I need. Make the game not so damn boring.

I don't know, I remember one announcer stating at one point which might have been in the 3rd Q that Iowa only had 2 neg plays.

hasn’t been great couple of weeks for those who wanted this whole thing torn down, gutted out and losses to stack up to get their way.

Y’all know who you are. If you give up on everything this easily you get what ya have coming to ya, but it’s not very Iowa Hawkeye like.

What’s happening at WI changing who they are, could set them back for some time. But hey, now they got an up to date offense.

Ya reap what ya sow but like I’ve been saying on here for 2 decades, enjoy the wins now, it’s not always going to be like this. We’re in one of the best stretches of football our program will ever go through. Instead of burning it down, try and not be a puke and enjoy what this team does every season, win. Iowa football is a something to be proud about

I was actually going to start a thread titled something like "We All Need To Give InGoodCo Some Credit And Some Need To Apologize". You've been consistent with your thinking and support this entire time when many have wavered. I give you credit. I myself have found me wavering to a bit going back and forth but always trying to stay positive. I tend to look at the glass half full but at times have digressed to a point.

This is turning out to be one of KF's best coaching with all the injuries and working thru the line play to find effective play. I can truly understand why he gets emotional after these kinds of wins. He's truly emotionally invested. We could have the opposite and have a Franklin or some other Joe. Iowa fans need to realize how unique and special that is to have a coach so emotionally invested. It just isn't like that everywhere. If some want to go another direction and take the chance of not getting an invested coach, so be it I guess.

But, koodos to you Good! Thanks for keeping it objective and real during difficult times.

Thanks for the love, no need to apologize. I come here and I do try and be objective and most of all, I like to keep the doubters and naysayers in check. Now, that gets me labeled a homer and I am fine with that. I am a homer. I love Iowa sports. I've never waivered because I've watched this program circle the wagons so many fricking times. They aren't there yet and I've seen them shit the bed too haha. But I feel we as fans are way harder on our team then anyone else is. Iowa is good football guys. They are likely going to remain good at football while we retain our HOF coach that understands what it takes to win and be successful at Iowa. That's not really going out on any island but I appreciate the love either way Melrose, you're a great contributor to this site.

Good stuff, Hawk.

Agreed. If BF would have coached like that all season he'd still be on this staff next year.
Do you think he coached any differently though? He didn't. I am sure they almost did nothing different as a staff then they have over the last severals seasons. Every game Iowa plays is in a vacuum. They change enough each week just to get enough to beat their opponent. Iowa dropped more yardage on Rutgers then Ohio State did. Iowa allowed 16 less points to Rutgers then Ohio State did. Does that mean Iowa is better than Ohio State? Of course not, don't be ridiculous. The results were different because situations were different, opponent was different, Iowa down over 7+ starters on offense, so the players were all likely different for the most part too.... different situations and games result different outcomes, I highly doubt our coaching staff has really waivered much if at all from their core game plan.

Correct, they haven't wavered from their philosophy how to win football games. But, they did change up the alignment and play calling against Rutgers. Iowa went a lot of empty backfield and spread the field to get Rutgers opposing defenders out of the box. This was a good decision and it worked. They trusted Hill with some quick reads with the empty backfield.

This was my thought as well. And not that Hill's shown much promise, but Saturday it looked like we were actually using a passing attack rather then only throwing when we absolutely had to. It just felt like the mentality was different this week across the board, whether credited appropriately to BF or not, it just felt as though our offense had a purpose and we were attacking Rutgers and trying to stay on the field rather than simply putting our offense out there to buy our defense time. It just seemed as though our offense had something to prove. And I agree that the philosophy has always been to win games, but for a change of pace it felt like the sense of urgency to do so was on the offensive side of the ball this time while the defense did what it always does.

I would argue they did nothing different than they have over the last several decades.

Saturday, Iowa looked like just about every Iowa offense I've seen in the years 2001-2020. Rollouts, bootlegs, screens. Run the ball. Hit a TE in the seam. Hit a receiver 7-15 yards down field. Occasionally toss one a little deeper.

I've been fine with it for 20 years. And it will continue to work (at times) in the coming years just as it works at times today. When your access to the toppest of top level athletes is limited, you go with smart athletes who will buy into the system. For many of them (TEs, linemen and defensive players) they end up as top level athletes who go on to get paid a lot of money. It's a system that should be able to overcome injuries, graduations, and portal transfers.

It works quite well sometimes. When it doesn't work, it's rebounding within a year. There's never, until recently, been a multiyear decline. That problem has been more or less addressed.

In all fairness the critics should remember Iowa has been 7-6 (2014); 12-2 (2015-Division Champ); 8-5 (2016) 8-5 (2017); 9-4 (2018); 10-3 (2019); 6-2 (aborted 2020);10-4 (2021-Div Champ); 8-5 (2022); 8-2 (thus far 2023 and Div Champ). Iowa played 106 games and won 86 in just the last ten years. That's a .811 winning percentage in the current and nine preceding seasons. Pretty good numbers for a middle weight.

Every single social, media, demographic and legal change in those ten years has been bad for Iowa and good for teams with sugar daddies or BB status-and Iowa is neither. Enjoy it now because next season it's going to get a lot worse.

1000%

I think the players improved some as the yr has gone on. Hill looked a lot more comfortable back there. The no penalties thing was huge and that's a huge credit to the coaches and attention to detail but the players are who get it done. BF did add a few wrinkles this week with going 4 wide on early downs a few times. And it worked it was obviously not expected by Rutgers. But mostly we had 3 RBs all run the ball hard for like over 50 yards each and stayed out of 3rd and longs. That's a game changer for our O. So to me the staff coached the same mostly, things just were executed well and went our way more.
