Gotta Love the RPI

So you want it more like the BCS? IMO I think the way it's set up makes it special. The fact that midmajors, who aren't the big name schools make those runs makes it special. Lets be honest, you'd never see programs like Butler or VCU make runs if the mid majors weren't given the opportunities that they are given. We're not seeing the top 4 teams taken in a lot of the weaker conferences, it just happens that a team heats up and wins their conference tourny and gets the invite they deserve, regardless of who they are or what seed they get. I'm a firm believer that programs should be rewarded for winning conference tournaments and if we start playing the game in which we deny the Cinderella's the opportunity they deserve (as conference champions not necessarily at-large bids) then whats the point. The fact is as much as America loves the thought of who the next Cinderella team is, once that Cinderella team pulls the upset then they rightfully prove they along with the other potential Cinderella's belong there.

Keep automatic berths. Make all the 16 games and maybe even all the 15 games play in games. Forget this 12 seed play in nonsense. But the latest Palm projections on CBS.com have a total of TEN teams from the A-10 and Mountain West getting in. That is 1 fewer team than the ACC and Big Ten combined. I get the ACC is "down" or whatever, but that is an absolute joke. As much as I like Alford, I couldn't see his top of the Mountain West squad with its super lofty RPI getting out of the freaking 8/9 game in the Big Ten Tourney, let alone getting past the second day if by some fluke it won the 8/9 game. And yet Alford's RPI props up that entire crappy conference and will end up jobbing Iowa or some at least respectable ACC team out of the tournament so that Boise effin State can get a damn 10 or 11 seed so some prole can strut around the water cooler like an idiot "popping" his $8.99 JCPenney clearance rack button up shirt with ring around the collar puffing out his chest about how effin awesome he is when he "calls" the Boise State-Notre Dame "upset" if Boise State gets lucky and has one guy who gets hot for one freaking game before Boise gets summarily bounced by Michigan or some legit team in the second round.

That moron prole in the $8.99 JCPenney clearance rack shirt is precisely why this pretty damn respectable Iowa team that would finish no worse than second in the Mountain Freaking West is going to get effin' jobbed out of the tournament, and so yeah, I hate that guy. Absolutely hate him. You sound like that guy. Are you?

Sixth in the toughest conference in the country and we're not in yet. SIXTH. Guess we should move to the Mountain West where if we were sixth we might actually have a shot of getting in. I'm not even watching the tourney. This is despicable. I guess we should have played Walla Walla like Boise State did.

So Iowa was 72 or something earlier in the week, and dropped to 76 based on what our opponents did. But now our opponents go up in the RPI and it has no impact on our RPI whatsoever? Is that what I'm hearing?

So WTF. Is there some line of code that does the RPI calculations that says "If team = Iowa, then do this, else do that"?

Iowa's RPI doesn't just change based on whether Iowa won or lost the most recent game and how strong the opponent was. It also is affected by whether all of its opponents to date won or lost that week, and whether all of its opponents' opponents won or lost that week.

Sorry to go here, but I really need a "He mad" or "U Mad" pic posted but now I can't even get that.

SIXTH

As far as scheduling is concerned, you have to keep in mind that scheduling is a two way street. I would imagine that most if not all programs are interested in two things when scheduling games. #1 is trying to schedule games you can win, and #2, if you are going to schedule a game that you are going to lose, make sure that loss counts as much as it can. So, going into this year, if you area Middle Tennessee State and you are trying to play the RPI game, would it be more of an advantage for you to lose to a 20-10 Iowa team or a 26-5 Michigan State team? If they are playing that RPI game, it does them nothing to schedule the Iowa game because there are so many 20-10 teams to choose from, many of which you can actually win.

Fran cannot really talk specifically about this either, it is bad PR. He is saying now that he designed the schedule so his team can learn to win, sure, that is the right answer. What is he supposed to say? Hey, I tried to schedule better crappy teams that will have a better record at the end of the year so that we can try to manipulate the RPI as much as we can but those teams wont return our phone calls because they are all lined up trying to play Duke?

I would imagine that if we have all figured out how the RPI system works that there is someone on Iowa's staff that actually works with this type of metric in much more depth than us. Probably a grad student handles this full time or something.

Look at New Mexico's schedule, who did they play. They played 3 major conference teams and all three were projected to be middle pack. They took their chances on those games because they would boost them tremendously with a win, but wouldn't hurt them much with a loss. Had they played Georgetown instead of Cincy, UCLA instead of USC or Syracuse instead of UCONN, they would have lost all three and their RPI would suffer. It was a calculated risk. But, the flip side, those teams schedule New Mexico because they knew what they were doing and more than likely would have a 23-8 to a 27-4 record, a RPI boost for them as well.

LOL, I visit the forum everyday but just dont take the time to find my password and log in! Plus, I could do without the constant drama. Thanks for the compliment and I have to say I have enjoyed reading following your insight as well.

I'm widely regarded as the best poster on this board. Sorry, I'm having a little meltdown today. I put up a post a few weeks ago projecting we would win the BTT and now I'm getting nervous we might get bounced and I'm concerned about the hit to my reputation if my prediction is wrong.

So who you going for tonight? Cats or Hawks?

This is a very good post.

This is a very good post.

Like. Hopefully with the Durty Thirty gone this guy brings substance like that more often. Gotta talk to The Committee, but I think we might have an early front runner for BB Board Poster of the Year.

He's got some serious catching up to do on Windsor but he's on the right track.
