Gopher Players threaten to Boycott Bowl Game.

This is true. But the root cause is the breakdown of the nuclear biological family which has left black boys (and girls) without ever-present strong male role models. Now of course this breakdown which was first pointed out in the 60s has spread to every other demographic.

Basically the unintended consequences of the great society programs is that American parents have farmed their responsibilities out to others, usually the gov't. Simultaneous with that those same parents have willed themselves into perpetual adolescence. There is a special irony when NCHawker calls for more government programs to fix a problem largely caused by government programs that encourage/enable a lack of personal responsibility.

Wow are you way off the target blaming the govt and the Great Society and trying to deflect blame away from the individuals who commit crimes.

We all just need to realize that there are bad people out there or to put it another way a lot of people who will do bad things to other people and/or property.

There are a lot of young white, black, and other people of color who grow up in rough or bad situations without a parent lets say and these young people are good people. Perhaps there is a more deep biological reason for the agression and narcissitic behavior of some males as in as simple an explanation of their testosterone levels. There have been studies of the birth order of sons that show lesser agressiveness from the first born male to a third or fourth born male which can be linked to the mother's body suppressing testosterone levels of the fetus. Perhaps it is reasons like this rather than if the Great Society let everybody down or made people not have to own up to their own responsibilities.

ESPN announced that the Minnesota players ended the boycott this morning and will now play in the Holiday Bowl.

They shouldn't even get the opportunity. Make dumb demands, poor decisions, get the opportunity to play in a bowl game taken away. Sorry kids, there are consequences. Just my opinion. Which means nothing. Tired of teenagers thinking they run things.

They sure as hell shouldn't be rewarded with a bowl game. And allowing them to have a temper tantrum and days later say...ok, we'll play...nah bruh...ya won't. No. Illinois will be more than happy to take your spot.

Now, get off my GD lawn.

You can single out rap music if you want, but there are plenty of things in pop culture, in society that degrade and objectify women far worse than rap music. Rap music didn't create strip clubs, rap music didn't create porn, rap music didn't create Tinder. Rap music certainly didn't create the breakdown of the family unit. Imagine in your late teens, early 20's you had access to porn the way these kids now have it .....without proper guidance it could warp your perception of things. A hookup nowadays as easy as a swipe right.

I think you are being shortsighted on this. I don't know man, if you are getting the decay of society from some lyrics about how some girl's booty jiggles then then go ahead and make it a black thing.

Agreed. In my teens and 20's...I listened to 2 live Crew, NWA, played mortal combat, GTA, and Call of duty(well, that was in my 30's if I'm honest)...

Yet somehow I didnt assault women, shoot anyone, rip people's spines out, or steal cars...whew...guess I was lucky

Blaming any of those things on kids doing stupid, dangerous, illegal, morally crappy shite like this is a cop out.

In Omaha last week a story of a group of high school boys masterbating into a coffee cup and then giving to a teacher who didn't know and drank it...

No words.

Not sure what's wrong...but it feels like more these days.

I've got no answers, but pointing the finger at the hip hop culture and saying that's the problem, that's the starting point i just roll my eyes.

If you want to point fingers it all starts at home, how your raised.Their all old enough to know right from wrong.

The problem comes when society doesn't know right from wrong.

For example, a society that has one standard of law enforcement for the "beltway establishment", and another standard for everyone else.

Y'all know what I'm talkin about.

Understand what you are saying, but there is the part of poverty and opportunity in the family structure. However, the MN thing really isn't about that. Actually one of the guys seems to have a pretty involved father. Alcohol, youth, and peer pressure can be a bad mix even with "good" kids.

I have daughters, not sons. But if I was the son of a Division-1 male athlete who thought they were going to play well in college or past college, here's what I would tell him:

1. Colleges will suspend and expel you with or without reason because you are male. You will not get to argue your case before anyone at your college. Title IX will make sure of that. It is possible for you to be in the right and still get thrown out and your "career" ruined. Therefore, you have to be above reproach. Therefore,
2. Do not drink. Anything, ever, whether over or under 21. You make bad decisions when you're drunk and you can't afford any bad decisions.
3. Do not "date"/"hook up with"/"like" anyone at your college who didn't know you before you were a D-1 athlete. Again, they may mean well. But if they do, they'll be around after you graduate. Keep your HS girlfriend.
4. And anyone who has realized 1-3 has raised a child who does not need to be told not to make a sex tape with a dozen of your boys and one girl at a party. If you have to tell a college kid that for the first time, it's too late.

How old are your kids. You can tell them....

Before 25, the human brain is.....

I do personally think that 18/19 yo is too young to move into a major college campus.
When one of my son's went on a recruiting trip, I was pretty disappointed in how coaches didn't supervise much.

Let me paraphrase so you can understand.

Was it because of a decline in family units....No, that's always been a problem, even in Iowa.
Was it because of the fact they were black...No, white's have done this as well.
Was it because of the Great Society? No, the GS was an attempt to fix an existing race/opportunity problem.
Was it the girls fault? Stupidity and Naivete are not a reason to get gang raped.
Was the boycott because of the players demanding to know why the suspension? Apparently yes and for many not because of the suspension for what occurred.
Did the coach support the boycott? Yes, but did he know everything? Hmmm.
Does this subject evict a lot of emotion on both sides? Yes do to life's experiences on both sides of the fence.
Do some on here back track from statements? yes, happens a lot especially when called out. I've been wrong a few times too.
Are people uncomfortable with the subject? of course. My guess some would like to see Mary Beth Haglin go to jail. Others think of the minor student...that sly dog. This like the MN case will always bring out emotion. What is different is that it is much harder to ignore such things with current technology.

My suspicion is that those who have been posting on either side are particularly close to this type of subject either as a victim/close to a victim or as the accused or close to the accused.

Good Lord, when you are involved in an "in-person" conversation, how often are you told, "Jesus, you TALK TOO MUCH!"

Absolutely correct on that last sentence.

There's no gentle way to put this. Larry Elder and myself are much smarter than you. We're not genius', it's just that you're swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool.

Whatever Bob...hugs. Fact of the matter is that we all do, especially on hot button issues. Actually in in-person conversations...never.

I've also never been called Jesus before either. Your the first.

The last sentence doesn't negate the fact that he's wrong on social issues 95% of the time. He and his big-gov't balkinization religion got their clock cleaned in November.

You are such a kill Josh. And so wrong about my politics. Being an Iowa farm kid I can be as red neck as the rest of you. At the risk of upsetting Bob for talking.., I've voted for only 2 Dems in my entire life and one was a Dixiecrat and none at the Presidential level. Nor am I Green Party or Libertarian as socially they are too liberal for me.

The balkinization (sic) comment doesn't really make sense. If you stated my social issues, I'm sure you'd be very incorrect. The problem is that as issues become more complex, it's hard to be firmly entrenched in any party right now. I do think while most people are arguing Republicans or Democrats, the Democrats AND Republicans are making away with their money.

Both the Republicans and Dems lost the last election for a reason. Trump who is really neither beat ALL of them. He didn't win because of what he stood for. He won because the others all lost. That was a 20 year low voter turn out.

I am a Hawk fan though so we have a few things in common. We both support a University athletic team that represents a university whose educational agenda and general philosophy that is in general far more liberal than my politics OR yours. I am sure of that. Go Hawks...

I would guess that ISU is likely more conservative in policy, philosophy, and among the faculty. Maybe you shouldn't be here?

As my dad has been telling me for years.....it's not the kids that have changed, it's the adults.

Teenagers and young adults will always do stupid, outlandish, childish, even sometimes criminal things. It's been like that since the dawn of mankind. What's different is the adult response to it. Where there was once responsibility, accountability, and owning up to ones mistakes that was taught to teenagers, they are now taught to blame everyone else. Where there was punishment and consequences handed out by adults, there is timeouts and "boys will be boys".

Until adults stop letting the inmates run the asylums and start teaching the life lessons that are supposed to be taught....this is the end result.

Boy does Josh Brown need to read and follow this rather than blame everyone else.

I doubt that Josh Brown knows anything about behavioral modification and negative consequences for negative behavior.

haha, just got to laugh at how lame you are always calling people names without a hint of facts.

I didn't read your reply. So if you recognized the error of your ways you're not going to want to read this. Elder and I own you. You're genetic liberal which is why you will always be bitter and lack the ability to learn from logic.
