Goodson

Young has had a couple long runs where he pretty much wasn’t touched. That run he had Saturday would have been a touchdown if it was Goodson.
Or Sargent, or IKM... but it wasn't, it was Young.
Don't start fooling yourself into thinking that TGood is the second coming of non-fumbly Ronnie Harmon. He isn't even the best back on the team... yet.

All of our RBs tore it up Saturday. I’m just saying Young’s stats are a little inflated by a few long runs. I can’t knock him for making those long runs but I think most people who have watched the Hawkeyes would tell you 10 & 15 are the two best backs, despite Young having the best Yards per carry right now.
I don't get what the hell inflated stats mean in this situation. Did Young not run the ball for those yards? Did he not earn the yards? Or are you saying that the coaches/team did something different and out of the ordinary on Young's runs to get him more yards - because that is what inflating stats means to me.

I'd almost throw out the MTSU game. They were small and out matched. It was practically a practice session. Most yards under KF
Yeah, but the backs that played, all played against that same team. So when comparing between the backs, you can't toss it out .

Iowa is going to need all 4 backs this year. Some games and matchups will lend itself to a certain type of running attack. My question is what's the hurry? Did we not learn that more snaps and playing time doesn't automatically equate to better output? It's not like the other backs are not being productive. Having this type of depth is a luxury IMO and as long as long as TG continues to produce and not turn the ball over, he will get his.
This is one of the reasons that AJE was so disruptive last year IMO. He could come in fresh and pin his ears back. Now he has to play more snaps and play a more complete game. I think he is doing a real good job, he just doesn't have the luxury of fresh legs and just hit the QB like last year.

I don't think anyone is advocating for that. I'm certainly not. We do have 2 other guys plenty capable of doing well too. However 10-15 touches with 25ish snaps wouldn't be too much at all. I'm just hoping to see something along those lines as we get into the meat of our schedule.
But isn't that what he is getting already? And they haven't all been junk time either.

I tlked to a guy from Georgia who knows football in that state. He said Goodson was a beneficiary of a stud lineup his junior year. Many D1 players that year that he didnt have his senior year, and he did not produce as much.

I think a red shirt is very much in line. In fact I hope he red shirts, because he will be a monster for us his senior year.

Yep, his team was loaded and they won the Georgia 7A title his junior year and he rushed for 1400+ yards and 25 TDs. He still had a great senior year, 1180 yards and 25 TDs again and was named Georgia POY as a senior. Gwinnett County is as good as it gets with D1 football talent at several schools.

(247 stats)
Att Yds TD's
2017 178 1,315 20
2018 159 1,147 25

Not really much difference, actually. Guess that's why he was POTY?

They don't need to red shirt him, but could if they wanted.
I would kind of leave it up to him.

This inflated stats crap is just that.
You can't compare or not compare backs against the same team. Maybe from the first couple drives to the last, but that's conditiong and subject to individual and coaching. Maybe even genetics. So any guess is as good as the next how much if any of a drop there is.
But how can you say, or not say we played this team and that team and so did they and draw a reasonable conclusion from that and say or not say this back or that back did better or worse than not only other ones on the same team but on other teams who have played the same competition.
Which is my point about numbers!!
Iowa 18
ISU 17

ISU 21
Baylor 23

Baylor had a larger margin of victory.
More points usually means more yards (to lazy to look it up).
Yet Iowa is ranked 14th
Baylor 23rd.

Numbers only tell part of the story and that's why we play the game.
That's why we all talk about betting. Because if the numbers were always right or perfect, we wouldn't have anything to bet on now would we?
And that's why I put my $ on the Hawks to win. Because I believe in them. I believe we have the right coaches and I believe our team belongs in the top 5.
It's also why I never bet against them.
That's like sacrilegious or something.
Bad ju ju. To bet against your team.

I think Young has had a couple long runs where he was basically was untouched, basically very well blocked plays.

I like all our backs and I’m not saying Goodson is the second coming just yet, he just brings a little different element.

RBs take a pounding each week and it's A LONG season.
The rotation and keeping them fresh is working. A rolled ankle (God forbid) by one of our four RBs and the entire balance of carries will shift.

They all had extremely well blocked runs. It was MTSU.

I was thinking the same thing at the time. If I recall correctly, Young actually slowed down at the end of the run to take on a safety. I think that the coaching staff has done a good job bringing Goodson along. He will likely get a lot more touches as the season goes along.

Once again, we have someone erroneously equating athletic ability with being a superior football player. While it is a large part of it, it is not all there is to it, especially with what KF and Co expect out of their players.
You’re right Kirk knows best he never plays older less talented players. I’m sure Goodson fumbles and misses blocks all week in practice.

Gosh, that is probably really not the case considering how many carries he has gotten and when those carries have come.
It would be really silly to believe that.

If being the fastest/most athletic alone makes you the best football player, Tim Dodge would have been an all time legend.
There is a lot more that goes into being a good to great football player than that.

TGood is a heck of a player already, but he hasn't surpassed Sargent and Young yet, yet.
