Good read on Iowa QB commit Nic Shimonek

The enrollment at Mildred is about like sayyyyy.... Tuscola, IL.... Does he situation punt?

Didn't Ertz hurt his knee? And let's face it....southeast Iowa isn't a breeding ground for great football players. Ertz may end up being a great college QB, but after seeing the last SE Iowa star taking snaps, I'm not too unhappy we don't have another one coming into the program

We better give up on running backs then since all the rb's like to leave for one reason or another and don't pan out. :p

I have no idea if Ertz will be worth a crap or not. However, looking at HS stats no matter where they come from is dumb for QBs. You have to look at the tape, their mechanics and decision making. Ertz may be really good at those things which is why he had good stats or it could be bad competition or both. I'm just saying tough to judge by stats. Of course I'm not a HS football talent evaluator either so I don't know how to judge most of these things.

Oh well, Ertz is a good fit for KSU, same type of offense. And since Iowa won't adjust to the times, he'd likely get lost in the shuffle anyways.

Well KSU just picked up a commitment from IWCC QB, but not him. Ertz was recruited and committed as a quarterback.

A school can tell a kid they will give him a look at QB...and do so..and then the kid sees he's not gonna play QB there and can go to the position the staff pretty much pegged him for when he came there, or leave. Ertz isn't gong to be a QB at Kansas State

I love complete generalizations about all HS players from 1/4 of the state. Just completely ridiculous to make statements like these.

It's like saying, I hope Iowa never recruits another 5* prospect because Dan Doering didn't pan out. Sad.

It is what it is. Knowing what I do about SE Iowa HS football, I'm not unhappy the most important position in football is not being targeted in SE Iowa. I apologize if this offends you. But it doesn't change my way of thinking. As I said, I wish the kid well. And if he ends up being a great QB at KSU, good for him. The importance of the position would lead me somewhere else.

Doesn't offend me at all. I'm from SE IA and know the competition isn't real great, but each player is an individual talent. I don't think I would necessarily want to go looking for a LB in SD or a DE in nowhwere, nebraska that play 8-man, but sometimes you get that rare kid that has the talent level. Kids generally can't help where they are born and raised, so they play where they are and with the talent around them. I'm not saying Iowa will ever find a stud player in SEIA, but they could. Just depends on the kid.

I generally wouldn't have said that the bball talent was great in SEIA either but Jess Settles tore it up and did well at Iowa. Very different I know, but you can't always judge by the area a player comes from.

No, he's the JUCO qb from Iowa Western who just committed to KSU and will likely play right away. I'm talking about Jesse Ertz from Mediapolis, IA. He'll red-shirt next year as he tore his ACL in the playoffs this year.

Here are Ertz's career #'s.

446-713, 7337 yards, 98 td's, 24 int's. 62.5% comp %, 16.5 yards/comp.
302 rushes, 2116 yards, 32 td's, 7.01 yards/rush

Ah gotcha. I hadn't heard of him but just looked him up. He looks like an athlete for sure. KSU has some qbs on the roster it'll be a battle for the job there.

Any evidence behind that or just your gut feeling?

This is hysterical. Fans from a state that at most produces 5 legit D-1 players per year is dissing a part of the state. Wow. Comedy Central.

The more I read about this kid the more intrigued I am by him. He's showing very good accuracy to put up those numbers. I also like that he's been a varsity starter since he was a freshman.

I use Yahoo search to follow this kid, there is a website that has video of his play from each game of his entire JR season, 1 clip for each game.
sorry I can't post web addresses as it never works for me, but to go look just use "Mildred HS FB STATS" to get the info

Redhawk, who are you most excited about CJ Beathard or Nic Shimonek?

i see he takes a lot of snaps from shotgun - is that good or bad in Davis' offense? Vandy did the same in HS

It is not Davis' offense, it is Kirk Ferentz' offense. Vandy would have been in the shotgun no-huddle the last two years if it was not Kirk Ferentz offense...

Hopefully Nic can learn to be a drop back QB. Otherwise his talents will be wasted...

Bingo! KF wants his offense to be ran a specific way. GD has a little more leash than KOK, as by the flea-flicker play. I bet KOK saw that and said "WTF", he wouldn't have let me do that.

I have not seen much of Beathard to make a real conclusion, but from the videos to like Shimonek, the fact he can run as well as pass, makes him more appealing.
almost 8000 Yards passing and a 1000 yards rushing til tonights game where he will pass both those markes, the thing is he was on pace to pass for over 3000 yards and run for 1000 Yards this season alone, but he had back to back games where he just had 15 and 20 yards rushing to take a 1000 yards mark out of contention, up to that point he was avg'ing 81 yards per game rushing,
his team avg's over 280 yards per game rushing,
Shimonek had back to back games where he went 10-11 for 180 yards, 3 td's 0 INT'S and then 11-12 for 165 yards 3 TD'S 0 INT'S,, that's some pretty good #'s, he is not a gunslinger because he does not need to be
he can come in and RS then compete for a starting spot

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out 4-5 years from now. As we discussed in other threads, I think it would be cool to see CJ or Nik to come in and start for 4 years. Then again I do still want to see Sokol and Rudock play well. I have been a big fan of Jake Rudock all the way back since he was first being recruited by Iowa.

3 QB's in spring practice starting out fresh from Fans prying eyes they will be a complete unknown, which will be a good thing for the youngsters, the thing about Shimonek he is a Greg Davis recruit, and considering the QB'S he has worked with in the past, going back to Major Applewhite.
under GD TX has had just "ONE" season outside the Top 25 in total Offense, even at North Carolina, Davis had top 20 offenses. lets let Davis get some of the type of skill players that work in his system before. throwing him out like "a baby with the bath water"
and they don't have to be 4 and 5* players, as Iowa has won before with 2 and 3* players with a few 4* players mixed in.
and as I showed the recruiting has been picking up
15 4* players
41 3* players
and 15 2* players.
and this years class has 1 4* and 14 3* and 0 2*'s,'
that better than getting 12-13 2*'s every year, like Iowa was getting from 1999 thru 2009
