Good PTL update from today...

Some scoring totals form Twitter: Marble 32 points on 12-of-17. Archie 14 points on 6-of-8. In defeat, May had 24 points, Oglesby 10. Gabe was not in town and did not play, nor did Gatens.

Holy crap, those highlights are pitiful! Seriously, those were the best vids they could find to post???

Great to see such a huge turnout! Archie & Marble's team is going to make a run at the title. Darryl Moore, Duez, Anthony Lee & Wes Washpun are going to make a team. Gatens, White & Basabe are going to be right with them as the team to beat. Those two going head to head will be a fun matchup. Although I wouldn't count out Hubbard and all his UNI teammates.

I will have to check out PTL one of these days. Especially in a couple weeks once it gets rolling, and the players are a little more familiar with each other as teammates.

I can't complain because I can't be there to contribute, but it would be awesome if someone could get out there and post some good video.

I don't know if he captured any good highlights, as I haven't had the chance to watch, but hawkeyedrive.com has some longer videos with better recording quality

To put together a good highlight reel, you probably need to shoot at least 20 minutes of a game...to maybe get 1 minute of decent highlights.

I am going to head over either Tuesday or Sunday and intend to roll video for a couple of hours and hopefully get two or three quality minutes out of that.

Here are his highlights from tonight. My initial thoughts are that he is not nearly as bouncy as I was hoping for, but he does seem to be able to get to the cup. Just having someone on the wing being able to get driving buckets will be a huge improvement. He seems to have a rather rugged game which can cause the opponents some serious foul issues.

Secondly, his jump shot is kind of nasty (not the good kind). His FT's were not a thing of beauty and the few jump shots he took had a nasty hitch in them.

Lastly, the competition at the PTL really, really sucks. I wish there were better athletes for the Iowa guys to go against.

Expectations are greatly diminished after watching ^^^^^ They weren't that high after initial signing, but this board made them increase as others made it sound as if he was something the video shows he is not, I though others knew something that I didn't.

He did look pretty fast/quick to me, with good ability to penetrate.

However, once he gets to the hole his finish leaves a lot to be desired. I think it is because he lacks control, though that does seem to get him fouled. Unfortunately his FT doesn't look good. His FT makes his shooting ability look poor as well, I thought I read posters saying he was a threat beyond the arc. Turns out they knew as much as I did about the "kid" and were just saying what they "hoped" for, representing as knowledge.

Watching that video, he reminds me an awful lot of Cartwright from early last season: athletic, can get to the rack, but often out of control, not a pretty jump shot. His passing did seem alright, though. Some of those won't work when the games count (like the cross courter that he makes early in the video), but he had some good passes. Pretty solid awareness. If he's anything like Cartwright in his development from the start of the season to the end of it, then I think we will be quite satisfied.

It's not easy to show up and play ball with guys you have never played with before in a league full of mix and match players. The basic defensive strategy is for all 5 guys to sag in the paint, so unless there is a fast break, getting to the rim isn't going to happen. I am sure he was pressing with all the fanfare, so let's see what materializes in the coming weeks. While I agree the highlights do not have a high wow factor, I think it is too early to start throwing evaluations nout out on what he can / can't do.

Great Job: remember this video and watch the coaches change his follow-thru as the season progresses, after a ton of practice they will tweak his shot, he can get to the rim which will take pressure off Cartwright and open Gatens 3 pt shooting, keep the video's coming

Unfortunately, I have to 2nd that motion. He's a great story (or will be a great story, assuming he keeps his nose clean - and I think he will), but as far as being "The Answer" to our basketball woes, I don't see it happening.

He looks like a guy that could get some minutes and might provide us with at least a semblance of a threat of a dribble-drive, but a lot of the buckets I saw him making just ain't gonna happen against Big Ten competition - about 1/2 of them would have been blocked right back into his face. Unfortunately, his free throw stroke leaves little if any hope that he is going to be a mid-range/3-pt threat.

On the plus side, he does seem to play very hard and really get after the boards (even though - again - he's not going to have a chance at a lot of those he was pulling down in the vid at the Big Ten level). Dropped a couple nice passes, too.

We can still be hopeful - who knows, the staff might be able to round his game out? - but I for one have had my expectations significantly grounded.

Meh, he looked fine to me. These games tend to look a lot like prison ball in the lane and I think that is what you are seeing there. He got to the line a lot and seemed to settle down and feel more comfortable in the 2nd half (10-13 from the line in the 2nd half).

The thing I noticed is how often he went left and how comfortable he was when he went that way. Being able to go both ways off the dribble is a huge asset, just ask Eric May.

My read is his dribble drive game will look a lot like James Winters, and if he can shoot +-70% from the line he will be a very effective offensivle player.

From this video Hubbard still appears to be a project, which is disappointing at this point in his career and the needs of this program. Hopefully Fran and staff will be able to polish off the rough edges and turn him into a solid performer. I agree, I do not see "The Answer" written on his back, and perhaps that was an unreasonable expectation from the start.

I do again wonder how players at the D1 level can be so poor at shooting free throws, particularly players who like to drive to the hole and draw the foul.

Question for you guys:

What does Hubbard have to average next season to be considered a success in your eyes?

I think the expectations placed on him thus far are a bit unfair (much like those placed on Royce White by ISU fans) but what benchmarks would make him not a bust next year??
