Good PTL update from today...

Question for you guys:

What does Hubbard have to average next season to be considered a success in your eyes?

I think the expectations placed on him thus far are a bit unfair (much like those placed on Royce White by ISU fans) but what benchmarks would make him not a bust next year??

10 and 5. Pretty much half the numbers he put up last year at JUCO. Then for his senior year I would want something like 14 and 8.

I wasn't impressed. However, that's not to say that he won't be impressive once the season is underway. It's a glorified pickup game, generally from what I've seen, no one is that impressive.

He clearly needs coaching. Anyone who expected otherwise was crazy. He's played 2 years of organized basketball in the last 8 years.

But you can see in those clips that he has the ability to do something no guards on the team currently can - score while being guarded. He's not going to average 20 points per game - hell, he probably won't even average 15. But he will be able to create a shot, which is something this team desperately needs.

Passing two years of basketball judgement on a guy from a couple minute clip of a pick up basketball game?

Yeah, that's the gospel:confused:

Pat Harty in the Press Citizen was impressed with Hubbard, but it sounded like he watched the whole game,so maybe he needs to limit his viewing to the 2 minute video clips. I will take his impressions over anyone on here who is basing it on the 2 minute video bite.
Harty was raving about his unselfishness in moving the ball, which is rare in these kinds of games. And how he took over at the end of the game when they ran some plays for him. I am encouraged.

But JD that's the way these boards work.

Step 1) We differntiate the Hubbard Haters from the Hubbard Lovers/Appologists.

Step 2) We spend the next two years in a trivial pi55ing match over which group is more clueless driving up page views and post totals in the process.

Step 3) ????

Step 4) JD Profits

Step 5) Repeat

You put Cartwright out there to draw a double and kick to a driving Hubbard without 4 guys standing in the lane and you will get a different outcome. I could care less if he is a great 3 point shooter, as we allegedly have a surplus of talent with Gatens, McCabe, Oglesby, May and White. We need another slasher who can get guys on their heels and free up our deeply rooted perimeter players.

If we get 10 points, 5 boards and 2 assists from Hubbard, I will be satisfied. You put this guy in transition and I think we get a lot of and 1 opportunities with his strength and determination to take it to the basket.

I'm not sure what people expected to see.

Here is a guy who can create mismatches, scores inside, creates contact, and passes well.

What wing on Iowa's team can do that? Certainly not May, maybe if Marble continues to get stronger, but I can't see being disappointed in bringing in a guy who instantly fills a need.

Here are his highlights from tonight. My initial thoughts are that he is not nearly as bouncy as I was hoping for, but he does seem to be able to get to the cup. Just having someone on the wing being able to get driving buckets will be a huge improvement. He seems to have a rather rugged game which can cause the opponents some serious foul issues.

Secondly, his jump shot is kind of nasty (not the good kind). His FT's were not a thing of beauty and the few jump shots he took had a nasty hitch in them.

Lastly, the competition at the PTL really, really sucks. I wish there were better athletes for the Iowa guys to go against.

Thanks for the video IA Jay! Don't hurt yourselves guys, but maybe you should force yourself to say something positive before picking Hubbard apart based on unseen expectations. The thing that struck me was his ball-handling, penetrating, and passing abilities. It's obvious why another pure PG was deemed perhaps desirable but not necessary by the coaching staff. I wouldn't put too much into shot execution at this point. He's got a lot more pressure on him than the freshmen. Even with that, 26 pts and 13 boards is pretty good.

LOL, well played, Duff.

Im not sure why everyone is overreacting. What do you really expect in a PTL game from a guy who has played 2 years in the last 8? He seems to be quick and athletic and can handle the ball well. Sure is form is off but it will be adjusted with good coaching. Take a chill and wait to see what he looks like in midseason form.

There are a couple things you can judge from a clip like this which is all I commented on: his jump shot and his bounce.

His jump shot has a hitch that needs to get fixed in a bad way, and he will not jump out of the gym to finish drives. His lack of explosion makes it tougher for him to get those and 1's, which is certainly not the end of the world. I just expected more bounce.

As everyone else said, he fits a crucial need which is more important than anything else.

Hub is mid-20's and just got a full-ride schloarship to a Big 10 University. The expectations are that there would be a bit more "smoothness". Local papers have been blowing smoke about him for weeks. Fran has been talking him up. This was the first time folks got a look. Based on these "highlights" I can understand the concern. Hopefully you are right. Ya gotta like his foul shot:)

There is nothing in these clips that people should not have already known from all the scouting info on Hub. He is a garbage-type scorer that will benefit from being stronger than other players around his size. Look for him to crash the boards, play tough D, and get to the line.

But the guy has played VERY little organized ball. So much so that his D1 position might not be determined. I have been thinking all along that he would be part of an undersized front line with Basabe and White. But who really knows?
