Good for you C. French

The last "Blue Chip" athlete from Cedar Rapids Kennedy was probably Al "The Vanilla Gorilla" Lorenzen. He stayed true and went to Iowa. Wrong decision! Popular to Hawkeye fans but a poor choice for A.L. Good for French to expand his horizons. Iowa, now go after other states "Blue Chip" athletes who want to expand their horizons, and quit whining about losing local talent. Good choice Christian French!!

At least, no one has posted that Iowa doesn't need French or can't stand French. Yeah, IMO, it's like some think their girlfriend/boyfriend cheated on them.

Move on to the next recruit. Try to beef up hybrid players.

Great athlete, not a good football player right now...not a big loss either...however he was very childish at his press conference.

This. French is apparently a freak athlete, but that doesn't make him a football player. Kevin Durant is a freak athlete, but I don't want to see him in pads. Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the history of men, but I don't see NFL teams chartering jets to Jamaica to offer him a contract. He may eventually pan out and develop into something special, but he's at least 2 years away from that right now. I'm not going to say he would hurt the team, because that's just stupid. But I will say he was far from a "must get" and I'd rather have a guy 3 inches shorter and .2 slower who's been a receiver his whole life. Less to teach.

Huh? I just got done watching it and came away very impressed with the young man. Very well spoken, not flamboyant, and very respectful

I wouldn't. Sure there are guys like Jerry Rice who succeed without being elite talents but most of them are.

Randy Moss
Terrell Owens
Brandon Marshall
Calvin Johnson
Andre Johnson
Dwayne Bowe

All the best WR's in the NFL and are all freaks with size/speed. Give me talent that you can coach up anyday

Awesome analogy considering the athletes you mention got recruited/participate in the sport that they were going to excel at.

What has Heyward Bay done for ya recently. Size and speed are great, but you need football IQ and ability to catch the ball. You can't teach hands! and he doesn't have any.

...which one of those guys was brought in with 0 experience as a wide receiver? I'm not saying I want little tiny guys who can't run fast, but a 6-3, 4.6 receiver with GREAT hands, excellent route-running, and a feel for the ball is much better than a 6-6, 4.4 one with no hands, no experience running routes, and virtually no experience making catches in traffic.

Wow, talk about totally missing the point. The point I was making is that everyone agrees Christian French is an excellent athlete. I haven't seen that disputed anywhere. However, not all excellent athletes should play football. With Bolt's size and speed, he'd make an ideal receiver on paper...JUST LIKE FRENCH. But that doesn't mean it'd work out to put some pads on him and have him run routes (in fact, they did it on ESPN after the Olympics and it was a total disaster; he was awkward out there and had no idea how to catch a football).

Your post basically makes it sound like anybody that gets recruited to play football, by definition must be a good football player. Beyond that, anybody who gets recruited to do ANYTHING must be good at it, using your logic.

Are you suggesting Al could have been more vanilla and a better gorilla had he gone elsewhere?

All this guys make spectacular one-handed catches. French can't catch the ball with two hands. I watched the end of a CR Kennedy replay on Mediacom last fall. On the last play Kennedy tried a hail Mary pass to tie the game. You would think that a 6-6 receiver with 4.4 speed would be the target. He wasn't even on the field.

You can "coach up" a lot of guys in football, however one thing you can't do for a receiver is get him a set of hands. You either have them at this point or you don't have them. Dallas Clark for example, had them, which made the switch to TE from LB easier for him.
