good effort by Mike G.. but

Yea it sucks that it was all for not. He really should have been rewarded for that effort. I wonder if he still drains that 3 if Fran doesn't call timeout.

Besides Gesell showing up big in the second half, Iowa did not commit one turnover in the second half. The rebounding was great.

Uthoff and Jok stunk it up the whole game.

Mike was great..but I hate the shot he took down 2 with 25 seconds left and 15 on the shot clock. 20 foot 2 point jumper with a guy on your hip..sigh.

That is what I expected him to be like as a junior. If today was closer to the norm for him instead of being a career high, we would be a damn good team.

Iowa shoots the ball too quick at times.....drive and get hammered, go to the line, make free throws, win the effin game. but nope, gotta throw up an off balance attempt that's short, try and run down to play "D", get a guy who hardly plays, or hardly scores, throws in a 3, and we lose.....sad story in the life of an Iowa Hawkeye player and fan...I have to get to the store, so excuse me while I throw some 90 year old lady in aisle 4 into the canned vegetables, only to get tossed by security and never be able to enter said store again.....(it could happen ya know)......;).....Good effort by Mike, almost got us the "W".....Purdue blows chunks, they are terrible...

imagine what the grade would be if the effort was there for more than a half.

i noticed the effort was there in the second half after trey entered the lineup toward the end of the first half -- instead of mikey.

Mike had a great second half but he had some really bad shots and turnovers in the first half. One really bad entry pass that was right to a defender and one he just launched to the scorers bench.

All that being said, him taking the ball to the hole in the 2nd half is what kept Iowa in the game late

If White didn’t get hurt I have a hard time thinking we don’t win that game. Purdue just isn’t very good outside of their bigs.

I love a good rant. and this is a good one!;)

Yep, a four star junior pg scoring 16 points should not be a big deal, he should be getting 13+ every night. Gesell also let Purdue hit the go ahead 3 when he was late closing out.

Well, so much for not having a bad loss on our tournament resume. This one hurt a lot. Purdue shouldn't have even been in the game. I still support Fran, and I know he's not the one out there missing shots, but he is the one choosing the rotations, and choosing when to call/not call timeouts, and making confusing "adjustments" at halftime that lead to second half collapses.

It's just really frustrating to be an Iowa fan right now. And before some moron says "well go find another team" I will always support the Hawks no matter what, but it's painfully obvious the athletic department needs a gigantic shakeup. We have one of the worst athletic departments in the conference despite one of the biggest budgets. Our basketball team is underperforming. Our football team is grossly underperforming. Women's basketball and wrestling are really solid, but the rest of the smaller sports are nothing special. There need to be major changes, and Barta doesn't have the cajones to make those changes. He needs to go. Sorry, rant over.

I would say it would be hard for any guard in a zone defense to get out on a guy 23+ from the basket. Gesell was doing what he should have doing which is sloughing into the free throw line because the ball was just to his right at 20 ft. No way to dash out to 23 ft and stop that shot unless you just give up your zone position before the pass.

Mike had a great game, but that last shot was inexcusable, and is a prime example why he is where he is as a Jr. He has got to understand that he needs to get his team into a WAYYYYYY better shot than that. It is on Fran as well, as he has encouraged these freaking 20' 2 pt jump shots. He has to be the only coach on the planet left that does so. It is a freaking joke how many 18, 19, 20 ft. 2 point jumpers this team shoots.

It is like the coaches and Mike forgot the 10 consecutive drives to the basket where he got a point blank look at the rim, where he had converted every drive with either a bucket or a foul, except for one time when Hammonds barely got the block???? I mean jeeeze, I'd hate to do that again to try to tie the game....

gessel should have been hedging to the guy with the hot hand.

So you want gesell to hedge out on a guy 24 feet from the bucket and leave the lane wide open with a one point lead?

And the ball was in a guard's hands just off the right elbow. No one teaches zone principles like that.

If you wanted someone on the guy with the hot hand maybe you should have called up Fran and told him to go box and one with Uhtoff or clemmons on Davis.
