Glorious morning

Well, not totally, but you know what I mean.
If we ever want to see a win on the road at USC, this is a pretty good setup.
A very good Iowa defense that feels a little stung and might be extra grouchy.
A QB whe either seems to "have it" or "not have it" at times, proved to himself he can 'not' have it in horrible conditions and then 'find it'.
An Iowa QB who appears to have rediscovered tight ends.
An offense that showed it can go 93 yards against a very good defense bv...gasp....throwing the ball.
Likely better weather for Wetjen.

Yes, they get the home field bump. And the USC home field bump. But, I still think a lot of people would say this game is a bit of a tossup.

And I'll be in Iowa City. I just hope I can hang with the kids until the game is won. Cause those em effers start way early and go way harder than this old fart can manage.

Good point. In my opinion, this one sets up much better for a Hawkeye win than if they had come off a huge win against Oregon and all the national buzz was about Iowa now being in the playoff race.

My main concern is that playing the previous whole game in 40-degree rain can have a draining effect on the body. Throw in a long trip the west coast. Afraid Iowa might not have the energy it takes to play a full game and might let up in the 2nd half. That kind of effort won't be good enough to beat USC at home.

The last thing I worry about with Iowa football players is them letting up.

Not enough energy? These are college kids. They don’t run out of energy.

So, I wonder what percent of them are actually experiencing college.....beyond football and bars.
Some of them do. Probably most of them, to some degree. My kid is friends with a kid who's just off the depth chart, but does do special teams and has some series recorded in 4th quarters against patsies. As far as I know, most of his NIL is self generated. You can buy jerseys with his name. It looks a bit like a web platform that is plug and play. Kind of like Cafepress or whatever where the University gets their cut for the logo and trademarks, and he gets his cut. I can't imagine he's getting big bucks. He does get an assload of swag. Whether it's from NIL, the university, the athletic department, or I suppose...Nike/Riddell/UnderArmour/Gatorade?. Pretty sure there's been some Pancheros gift certs. handed out to players....probably like water. Maybe even some from the Airliner. Anyway....

He does attend some classes in person. He does occasionally hang out at the library on occasion and connect with his old dorm friends and stuff.

I imagine with 105+ dudes out there, many who are freshmen and living in dorms. Others who are legit old school student athletes.....Course some are outright graduated.

So, let's say what....70-75%? Are actually attending who are experiencing college in a way that looks familiar to the other students on campus? 80%? For now?

Am I way off base on this?

I teach in a department that gets lots of athletes, including football players. I think they have some sort of "code of conduct" that mandates class attendance, because my athletes pretty much always show up (much higher attendance rate than non-athletes).

The majors within our department are pretty legit (it ain't biochem or physics, but is also ain't basket-weaving), so athletes that find their way to us generally take academics pretty seriously. The football players I have had, especially recently, have tended to be near the top of my classes.

KF has always tried to recruit the right kind of kids, IMO. This does not surprise me. If you think about the discipline it takes to be a student athlete, a lot of these kids are going to be overachievers when compared to the general student body. And many of them will go on to be very successful whether they play in the NFL or not.

I don't know how students do that. I'm not Stephen Hawking by any means, but I feel like I'm fairly intelligent and me personally...if I had skipped a couple classes in anything I'd have been so damn lost I wouldn't know what to do. I never skipped classes because I would've been afraid of failing. Maybe I'm just way dumber than the average person. Probably so.

It is a lot easier these days...everyone posts their powerpoint slides, most record their lectures. There are students who never show up and are still successful (especially if they come to office hours to ask questions). But, it takes a lot more self-discipline to make yourself learn OUTSIDE of the classroom. Showing up is still the most straightforward path to success.

The Iowa struggles on the West Coast are real and you have to acknowledge it. That said, I do think Iowa can “beat up” USC with their physicality. USC can’t go blow for blow the way Oregon could despite having very good skill player talent.

I am flipping on this one…starting to feel like a KF special here. The 0 for the last 12 against ranked opponents ends Saturday.

When I was in law school, one of my finals was being proctored by an offensive lineman I recognized. He was doing his differential equations homework during the exam. Even though I’ve always been a math geek, the law exam was much more appealing than the crap in his text book.

The good thing about this west coast game is that it's an afternoon game. If I remember correctly, most of the struggles have been night games, or at least in the case of the Rose Bowl, late afternoon games.

I think this game will say a lot as to where we are as a program. Our offense is showing signs of improvement, our defense is still getting it done, and we've looked good in two losses against two very solid top 10 teams despite just coming up short. I think winning a game on the west coast would be a major accomplishment based on recent history and think/hope this team will be ready to do just that this weekend.

Hope that’s the case. I’ve been on a couple west coast trips. Never turns out good. Wishing for something different. Arizona State was supposed to be a late afternoon game then it got hit by the post hurricane and was delayed into the night rain. Never thought I would be shivering in AZ. Their fans expected a big Iowa win and it was not in the cards.
