Ghost Sightings: 6 observations from the OSU let down

1.Why you wanna break my heart? Can anyone remember being this excited for an Iowa basketball game? Can anyone remember wanting a win this bad? Even Mrs. Ghost was getting into this game. And then we go and lose? Damn. That hurt. And not in the usual "It hurts he got murdered by 20" kind of hurt...I'm used to that. It's the "We freaking blew it" kind of hurt. It has been a while.

2.Will the real Evan Turner please stand up Has anyone had a quieter almost triple double than this guy did last night? He was just plain off his game last night, especially in the first half. And I don't give all of the credit to the Iowa defense for shutting him down, because he had Bawinkle guarding him a few times, and he still couldn't finish. However, he was able to flip the switch and single handedly destroy us at the end. I am still debating with myself whether or not he took most of the game off because it is Iowa, and he didn't feel like trying until he had to.

3.Don't call it a comeback, the jump pass has been here for years By my count, Cully Payne tried to jump pass roughly 700 times that game. I did not keep track of how often it worked, because everytime he did it, I went blind with rage for a few seconds. This is the second time I have had to call you out for playing stupid Cully. I wish your coaches would do the same.

4.RESERVEoir Dogs Part II: Welcome to the Dog Pound Want to know my theory. Iowa fell apart in the final 5 minutes because they were exhausted, particularly the guards. Our reserve guards played a combined 16 minutes that game combined. This is by far the least they have played in the last 4 games. Lick clearly doesn't trust l'il Lick or Bawinkle with the game close, so he rode his stallions of Payne, May, and Gatens as hard as he could. Unfortunatley, those stallions wore down, and didn't have it at the end, which allowed Even Turner, who I doubt broke a sweat until the 37th minute, to take over the game.

5.Immoral Behaviors Sorry, but I do not consider Wednesday to be a moral victory. I think the MSU game was a moral victory, but not this one. What is the difference? In the MSU game, we fought until the end, and made them work for their victory. In the OSU game, we handed them the victory. In my opinion, the avalanche started when we failed twice to inbound the ball while in our own end, and down by three. He give up an easy break away, and boom, we're out of it. I was impressed with the character of the team fighting back from a big deficit and making it a game in East Lansing. However, last night they played a 38 minutes game, and as far as I'm concerned, the final 2 minutes nearly over shadows the first 38.

6. Seriously, who the hell was that guy??? This is a non-basketball observation, but it is something that really got my goat. On the BTN broadcast, they kept showing this one guy. I think you all know what I am talking about. Everytime the crowd got into it, they wouldn't pan across the student section, or show the cheerleaders jumping, they showed a close up of some Asian guy with a flat top wearing a suit. Granted, that guy was really into it, but why did they show him over and over again? My working theory, is that he is one of the football players in attendance that I don't recognize. Is that what RIley Reiff looks like without a helmet?

I live life by one rule - if you drive baseline in the 1st minute of a game, attempt a jump pass from behind the basket and that pass hits the back of the backboard then you dont go the rest of the game attempting a 2 handed jump pass

Its a simple rule that ive always found helpful

I think I hate the jump pass more than anyone that I know. Seriously.

But to say Cully played stupid is... well... stupid.

When he does stupid things while playing, he is playing stupid.
So he had a couple bad passes, big freaking deal. You're talking to a guy that goes bonkers everytime he sees something like that. Like crazy monkey banana bonkers.

So you are saying that a few jump passes completely discredit that fact that he schooled Evan Turner on one play and earlier in the game he took it baseline and went up and under for the reverse layup... firing up the Iowa crowd and helping out Iowa in key moments? He kept the offense flowing as best he could, ended up with 6 dimes and 6 boards all while having an OSU defender in his jock all night.

But, yeah, let's talk about those jump passes as if that's all he did last night. Good idea.

WTF dude? You make me sound like the Spanish Inquisition. Sorry to dare criticize your precious. All of his good qualities clearly make up for the numerous bone-headed plays he makes.

Good grief. Whatever you do, don't say aything bad about Cully Payne, whether deserved or not.

By the way Ghost, I also didn't see any moral victory in last night's end-of-game meltdown.

So let me get this straight. I call out Payne for making some stupid plays, which almost anyone can agree to, he sometimes makes stupid plays. He makes a ton a jump passes, and whether they work or not, theyare stupid plays.

That is somehow extrapolated by Spank to mean that I think Cully plays stupid all the time, and in no way am I impressed by his good plays.

When I teach, I make it a point not to argue with children. I am starting to get that same feeling now.

The point is that you and the rest of the "haters" on here (Freddy, Hawk12345, etc) always seem to focus and the negative, and then pound that point into the ground. Payne made some mistakes last night, but that's going to happen with a freshman point guard. He also made some good decision last night, got his teammates involved, and made Turner look foolish a couple of times.

Ghost- Reading/Listening are important skills and some fail to do so.

I did not read your post as a personal attack on Cully Payne. Yes that jump pass he made when he hit the basket was dumb as hell. He needs to stop that pass, it's a bad habit to get into.

Cully did do a bunch of nice things in the game as well. People just don't read around these parts because most people are trying to defend either extreme being full out supporter or full out hater.

PEOPLE NEED TO FIND A MIDDLE GROUND AROUND HERE! Then we can have intelligent discussion.

Show me where you said you were impressed with his good plays.

You simply stated that Cully Payne "is playing stupid". That is false.

He has made freshman mistakes, but to say he is playing stupid is pretty far from saying you've been impressed with his good plays... because you didn't say that... you just said he's playing stupid. And that's a stupid statement in my stupid opinion.

Why were our players tired and not OSU's?

Lighty played 40 minutes.

Diebler played 37 minutes.

Turner played 34 minutes.

Buford played 36 minutes

Lauderdale played 32 minutes.

Iowa in fact had 1 more player play off the bench than OSU did.

Cougill and Bawinkel got the most minutes off the bench for EITHER team. Not one OSU bench player had more minutes than either of these two.

Time to stop blaming the jump passes on Cully. I think he's being coached that way. If you don't believe that, look at some tapes of games the last two years. People were on Tony and Jeff a lot because they drove the baseline or whatever and then threw a jump pass. One year, it might be the kid, two years, maybe a different kid, so ok. But the third year and another kid throwing jump passes, it at least has to be ok with the coaches.

I think Cully does a GREAT job of utilizing the pick/picking his spots. He knows he can not consistently beat guys off the bounce but he just seems to have a pretty good feel for when to attack and when to hold off. Earlier in the year him and Coughs ran a real nice two man game at times, I have not seen them work it too often as of late (some teams bigs recognice Cougs can shoot it and step out a bit more aggressively).... I thought Payne did a nice job against Indiana of attacking the basket. They tried to force him to his right but failed to cut him off and he too advantage often going to the hoop and finishing/dishing to an open shooter.

At the same time he is very poor late in the shot clock with the ball in his hands. He doesn't create consistently so he kind of stands there not knowing weahter to shoot a bad 3pt shot or try to dribble drive a tad to at least force maybe a help defender. He should be better at understanding the end of shot clock game later...

I think he is a solid player, but I would love to get another FULL TIME PG next year to help out.
