Ghost Sightings: 6 observations from the IU beatdown

1. How freaking strong is Jarryd Cole? I mean, the guy looks like he is built like a Mac truck, but yesterday he was physically dominating anyone within a three foot radius. For an encore, after the game he ripped apart Tom Crean's hair helmet like a phone book. Is there any doubt that if Cole were 6'10", he would be a legit NBA prospect. As it stands, he looks like he could be a force his senior year.

2. That basket owes you money. Attack it! The emergence of Fuller as a legit scoring option now gives this team the inside/outside game that many were clamoring for all season. With two serious inside threats, we do not have to depend on hoping that 35% of our threes go in to remain competetive, or as I like to call it, the Tucker option. When defenses loosen up on the perimeter, that leaves May and Payne open to race to the hoop like Tiger Woods racing from his wife.

3. Who greased the damned ball? There was quite a bit of ugly basketball played. Payne alone had more turnovers than a Dutch bakery, and all game long Iowa players were throwing the ball away and losing the dribble. While the rebounding margin ultimately helped us dominate the game, the turnovers are still a major concern.

4. Winning is easy. Iowa jumped to a double digit lead in the first 6 or 7 minutes of the game. I was really curious as to how they would handle that. They rarely have a lead on the road. I knew how they reacted to being down big...how would the react to being up big? What I saw really impressed me. I mean sure, they gave up the lead a few times, but were never in danger of losing control of the game.

5. RESERVEoir Dogs. Did anyone else notice when Indiana started creeping closer, who was on the court? When the lead was around 3, chances are the name Bawinkle, Lickliter, and Cougill were someone to be seen. While we have found a good starting 5 that looks like they can respectably compete in this league, or bench is doing us no favors. While I am suprised we were able to win so big on the road with such a lack of depth, I fear that it will cost us more games in the future.

6. Ready to take the plunge? Kool Aid anyone? For a team that I have been hesitant to get behind because they are so consistantly inconsistant, the audacity of them to put together three good games in a row has got me thinking, am I ready to buy in? For many fans, this is tough, since so many have spent their winter clamoring for the coach to be fired, and (I suspect) kicking puppies. If you ask for my advice, and by reading this, you are entitled to it, I say you should buy in. Not in a "I will pay to watch this team" way, but in a "I will stop mocking the coach's son so hard" way.

Let me put it this way; early this season the team was not getting any better. Now they are. You should at least give them tacit support...until they lose again. Then feel free to continue kicking puppies.

Agree with most, but Cougill was key yesterday. Had some sweet, sweet entry passes to Fuller, hit a couple crucial treys and had some timely boards.

Cougs was on yesterday.

I will agree on Lickliter and Bawinkel, however.

That's right. I meant Brommer but I wrote Cougill. Brommer actually entered the game the first substitution, and Iowa's 10 point lead evaporated.

If you won't pay to watch them play (if you have the chance), are you really buying in?

All those people who say they're buying in need to get off their butts and show up at CHA.

Unfortunately I think the people that are buying in are already going to the games. I talked to a couple "big" hawkeye fans this morning and they didn't even know Iowa was playing. Still a long way to go to get the fans back.

I texted my buddy half way through the second half and made a comment that the more I watch this team, the more excited I get for the future. To be honest, Payne, May, and Cougill should be role players as true freshman. Their learning curve is way ahead of where it should be. The one thing that I notice with this group of guys is that they play as a team, there is no 1 guy trying to do it all. Would Jake Kelly staying around be the difference between a bottom third big ten team and a middle of the pack big ten team?

I didn't think Brommer played enough to impact the game one way or another. He did have board that I remember, other than that, I can't recall him helping/hurting Iowa. The issue was more in the backcourt reserves.

The point I was making is that you shouldn't completely buy in, assuming of course that there are varying degrees of buying in-edness (look it up).

While I believe the future looks better, make no mistake, there is still a real chance that this team tumbles off a cliff in the next month. They are still not "Must See Basketball", not by a long shot. I still have to wonder, with the money and time I would have to invest to drive to Iowa City and pay to watch them play, I could by a case of beer, a few pizzas and throw a party in my basement.

Bawinkle has been a big disappointment this year. We know he couldn't do much on D but could at least hit the trey. Now he's not even doing that. There were times John Lick handled the ball about as well as the junior high rec b-ballers I used to coach.

If Lick can keep the starting nucleus together and develop Cougs, with the class coming in this could start to be a pretty solid team.

Great post Ghost. This one stood out the most to me. We do seem way to divided on this broad over BB. I don't like the way some downplay the wins, and improvement the team has made. I also don't like the over the top reactions that the team is back and that nobody should question anything anymore.

If you have watched the team you have seen the improvement. I just hope that this continues, and if it does there will be some real hope and optimism going into next year which would be nice for the fan base. It would give a lot of confidence to the players to, and we would be looking at over 1/2 of our starters next year being upperclassmen, which will be great for a change!

Cougill was easily a co-player of the game with Cole. Those back-to-back threes sandwiched around the charge he took put the game away. He is a very good player, AND he is only a true freshman.

I thought Brommer played reasonably well in the time he was on the floor. In fact in limited playing time this year I think hes looked OK. He's not going to set the world on fire but he's progressed to the point he can give a team 2-10 minuites in the post without it turning into a big void.

He's shown up particularly well on the glass.

I like it all too Ghost, except for #6. It's Iowa isn't it??? I don't have to decide to buy in or not, that decision was made long, long ago, no matter the year, the coach or the record!!!

I thought your post was good, but while you literally suggested people shouldn't pay to see them play, I'd like to encourage people to do just that.

Starting Wednesday against Ohio State.

Aaron Fuller is really improving dramatically week to week. It's great to see. He has such control and a soft touch down low. Plus he can shoot the ball with either hand in the post, which is a very difficult skill to master.

Also, Cully Payne is really improving. He is using more dribble penetration and getting to the hole with authority, something this team sorely lacked in the 1st half of the season. He is shooting with more confidence (still needs to work on the FTs though) and he is handling the one one one ball pressure better. For instance, he isn't backing his way up the court any longer. He is facing his opponent and trusting his ball handling skills and beating him up the court to start the offense. That is a big step.

I like the direction this team is going and hope the improved play continues.

It still depends on whether fans buy into the deliberate style of play that Lickliter has brought to Iowa IMO.

Perhaps the style will change somewhat? Will Iowa fans get used to never seeing fast breaks when they have an opportunity and instead hold up so they can take 30 seconds off the clock? And never again seeing uptempo play? For me, that will be quite difficult...winning or not.

I am having a great deal of difficulty watching this style of ball and don't know if I would pay to watch but I have never particularly liked to watch Wisconsin's style of ball nor Butler's. There is a time a place for slow, deliberate half-court style of play and there is a time and place for uptempo style. Unfortunately, Iowa only plays one way now...will that slow, deliberate half-court style bring back a full house? I guess time will tell.

I am glad they are winning but the wins have not been against stellar teams and the wins have come against teams with some of their better players hurt. I also understand that injuries are part of the game.

So I will enjoy the wins but will withhold judgement of improvement until we begin playing all the upper level teams straight up and even start beating them, without having to sneak up on them like we did MSU.

Plus I will have to wait and see whether Lickliter can actually compete for a Big 10 title or compete for one of the top three positions in the league year after year playing the style he has brought to Iowa and recruiting the players he is presently recruiting. He claims with his system he does not need to recruit the level of player that the top programs recruit, that his system evens things out. I will have to see that to believe it. Can it get Iowa to the middle of the pack in the Big 10? Perhaps...Can it get Iowa into the top three in the Big 10 perennially like MSU, Wisconson, OSU, and some of those teams without really stellar recruits? I guess we'll see.

And I won't be watching any games in person anytime soon. We won a few games, but for me to go back to CHA, I want them to be playing for something. No longer being an embarassment is not a good enough reason for me to schlep an hour up the road in the dead of winter.

Of course, that's just me. If dollar hotdogs are your thing, by all means make the trip. Just don't expect the 'fro to sho'.

I think this is the biggest crock of crap there is out there. Nobdy cares about the style of play. It's all about winning. I've yet to see any posts on football fans claiming that they are unhappy that they are winning because we aren't running the spread offense. Start to win and people will start to care. Start to win and people will be in the seats at CHA. Winning is everything in sports and it always will be.

You must not have ever read a discussion on KOK. Iowa football fans do it constantly.

The complaints aren't about how exciting the style of play is...they are from some very knowledgeable fans who know offensive football better than the Hawkeye's offensive coordinator.
