get ready for a new linebacker

This would be best for the team even if its not preferable to Derby.

No matter whether its him or Ruddock sitting on the bench, one of them is being wasted.

I really don't think the staff wants to see Ruddock on the bench for four years. JMO.

I don't think that hawkeye2011 is trying to do anything more than just share some info that he's come across. I definitely don't believe that he's purposely trying to do anything to mislead fans here. I personally don't know the story on Derby's situation ... however, very little would shock me at this point.

Sometimes you have to read between the lines ... when asked, Ferentz has explicitly stated how Rudock has been traveling to ALL games. Considering that Rudock is a TR FR who was really wanting to redshirt ... the coaches wouldn't be doing this unless Rudock has already done a lot to get their attention. Has he usurped Derby? Dunno ...
however I'm willing to bet that he already passes the ball better than Derby. Derby's primary advantage right now has been that he's been in the system longer ... however, since Derby has no chance of unseating Vandenberg, Rudock has all the time he needs to "catch-up" when it comes to getting down the system.

This may seem tangential ... but Zach Derby is a starting TE for us. That fact most certainly isn't lost on AJ ... nor is it lost on his family. If AJ were to get beat out at QB ... or if he were to even ANTICIPATE that he'd likely get beat out at QB ... I'd now be surprised if he were to transfer. He's not only invested with his own sweat equity ... but he's also seeing his brother become an impact player for us RIGHT NOW.

Lastly, there is the final "stretch" ... and that is this ... why would AJ Derby do something as self-destructive as what he did DURING THE SEASON?! If he really believed that he was destined to become our next starting QB ... do you honestly believe that he'd do something so stupid? Isn't such behavior more representative of a player who is disappointed about something? I remember when Dezman Moses got busted. He had pretty much just become more apparent that he'd gotten beaten out by Nielsen to back up Edds at the LEO spot. And, mind you, Moses was a dude who had plenty of talent and potential. While Moses ended up transferring ... I doubt such a fate would befall AJ.

Anyhow ... for the record ... I've long held out the opinion that AJ would hold out at QB for as long as he could be a legit contender for the starting spot. Most of what I've heard before has suggested that he'd been doing well at QB ... at least well enough to get ahead of Wienke. However, the new question is this ... how quickly has Rudock been catching up to Derby?

Is Hawkeye2011 right? ... I don't know ... but I wouldn't dismiss him out of hand.

just heard as well that AJ has switched over to LB. person who told me is fairly certain it for the long term but couldn't confirm.

Re: Linebacker Switch

I also agree. Its all about finding the right fit. The db's have been switching a bit to but I'm fairly happy with where are personal is now given that Morris and Neilson switch.

it makes me wonder why people with such low post counts are the ones reporting this story. not saying its not true, but it makes me wonder

Based on Coach Ferentz press conf. today I definitely doubt this rumor.

Q. Is A.J. back as your backup quarterback?
COACH FERENTZ: We'll see how this week goes but he's back with us full speed. He did a really nice job the last two weeks. In fact he was one of the guys running around throwing the ball against our defense, sometimes too good a job, so we'll see.
No where in that answer from Kirk did he come out and say yes he is the back up QB.
He left a lot of wiggle room with that answer. All he said was he was "back with us full speed." Perhaps he was back at full speed as a LB? Perhaps he "did a really nice job the last two weeks" as a LB?
Kirk ends the statement saying "we'll see"...we'll see what?

"In fact he was out there running around and throwing the ball against our defense"...dont think linebackers do that

Post count doesn't matter crap. Last week a guy on HR with under 20 posts, posted that he heard John Raymon was going to leave the team. He was blasted by a bunch of regulars, then it turned out to be true. A high post count, doesn't mean you have extra knowledge, it just means you have less of a life.

i didn't say it means everything. i'm saying if JDM, spank, homer etc had reported this, i'd be more likely to believe it than a couple guys with low post counts who haven't built any sort of respect on here.

i also ended by saying "not saying its not true, but it makes me wonder". meaning they could absolutely be right, but i'm tentative to believe it at this point

"He was ONE OF THE GUYS throwing the ball against our defense".
Of course he was. He is about the only guy we have that can compare to Persa's running ability as a QB. Coaches have, in the past, taken speed guys no matter what position they actually play and insert them into a scout position to better represent what a defense is going to face. It's nothing new. Perhaps that is what was going on here. I don't doubt it one bit he took reps as the scout Persa.

Thank you!

He was running the scout team for crying out loud. Not running the Iowa offense.

Re: Linebacker Switch

I don't like it. Morris lacks the coverage skills to play on the outside.

That's precisely why I backed up the original poster. I know for a fact that the OP tends to have access to good info.

Winner winner, chicken dinner. I like this explanation the most. If there is very little dropoff if any from Derby to Ruddock, then this is it. Maybe Iowa is also eyeing a top QB recruit so they would need to free up some space at the QB position? Just a THEORY.

I think this is rather ridiculous. The 'bust' was a hiccup and stupidity of a 19 year old. He did his time and apparently they have moved on.

So he was clearly the back up QB prior to the 2 game suspension. He ran the scout team during the two week timeframe to prepare his teammates. Based on a two week absence, he has supposedly lost the #2 to a Freshman. I'm not buying it.

AJ Derby is still our #2 QB until KF comes out with information to disspell that.

until a depth chart come out showing AJ as a LB, or he shows up on the field in a LB spot, i am not going to hold my breath in anticipation, besides we would have 2 QB'S and 1 being RS'd left, the notion of moving Derby to make room for another QB prospect is foolish as you need to take a QB each year, and if they are good they will come as the good ones welcome competition
