Anyone else notice how well he's been finishing at the rim lately? He's slowly turning it on and it looks the the yips he had with his shot (and free throws) are in the rear view mirror.

He has been doing better at the rim. And that defensive play a the rim was masterful. But I don't even care about that. the way he ran the offense was excellent. that's what I wanna see. Congrats Mike.

Seems like Gesell is turning a corner at being able to finish at the rim. It would be nice to get 1 1/2 years of this. Reminds me of Gatens who got blocked at the rim his first 3 years, but his Sr. year it clicked for him, and he finished well at the rim that last year.

I think there has been a noticeable difference in MG's confidence level since the UNC game where he won the game for us. His ft shooting has been much, much better. The thing about this team is after the N. Florida game and coach Driscoll's comments, we seem to be better and not dwelling on things and just moving on.

Scoring has been good. Still would like to see more passes leading to scoring. Iowa finished this win with 8 assist. Still appears Jok is better on entry passes. Hopefully with his improvement of finishing at the rim he can find some easy dishes in the paint. But his teammates need to find the right spacing when he beats a defender.

I think the official scorer screws him out of a few assists a game. He seems to get a pass to lead to a score but he doesn't get the assist. Doesn't really matter because anyone who wants to call him out doesn't understand how good he is and what he does. It doesn't just matter about the stats as he is the best on ball defender and the team general as the team falls into line and really seems very efficient on offense when he is running the show...they don't seem the even close to the same when he is sitting.

He done very well lately. Scoring is up, low turnovers, solid defense if not up against elite speed, and good free throw shooting this year. I wouldn't say me mentioning he could improve his assist numbers is a bash or anything. Iowa State's Morris had more assist than Iowa's roster today against Kansas. It's not just the scores tables fault, his height can make it tougher to pass around defenders. But maybe looking to jump stop to lure defense in and dish when he beats his man is something he could do more, especially if help defense is coming consistently on his drives.

Only thing I didn't like on him this season was looking for him to ISO for last shot at half a few times. I'd probably rather see no play clock plays be designed for Uthoff, as he is probably the most versatile scorer.

Hard to get assists when your teammates are living at the foul line... Mike is actually ranked 3rd amongst Big Ten players in assist percentage.

Here's the definition for those that don't follow the advanced stats: "Assist percentage is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor."

He's a nice solid BIG point guard. I'd still like to see him hit 2 free throws in a row, though. It seems he always goes 50\50 at the line.

He's getting smarter in choosing when he commits to driving. Today, he had a height advantage and attacked open lanes. It's easier to finish when you have open lay ups. He's still gonna get swatted if he tries that before the block D is cleared.

The best thing Mikey did today was recognize to dump it off to Woodbury rather than try to finish. Hopefully a sign he's getting smarter about what he's capable of and what a point guard is supposed to do.

You might think that is what he does but he is over 70 percent for the year...you don't do that without making 2 or more in a row.

I think both Mike and The Hawkeyes have looked pretty well this Big Ten season, the tough mom conference schedule helped a lot! Iowa couls be in 1st right now had Trice not had the luckiest game of his career

With Gesell's improved play I wish Iowa could get more consistency out of the 2 guard spot especially on the offense end. However, I will take what I can get.....baby steps.

I was super hard on MG at the start of this year. I have to admit he is really taking a step forward in conference play. Running the team, playing under control, kicking the ball to teammates on the drive, using his pull up mid range game instead of always driving into heavy traffic and playing very, very good defense. His decision making has improved 2 fold lately.

Good to see - great job and keep it up.

I've been hard on MG but he's been better lately, he's a much better alternative to Clemmons. Gesell is obviously never going to live up to his recruiting ranking at this point but he's been an average B10 guard lately and that is an improvement from earlier in the year. His TO rate is still at a career high this year and I don't think it's a lot to ask that your pg shoots over 40% from the floor though.

He has a FT percentage of 71.4%. Not great for a PG, but I'll take it.

By the way, as a team, Iowa is hitting 75.6% of their free throws, among the nation's leaders. They also have had 422 FT attempts, 23.4 per game. It shows they are playing very aggressively.

Go Hawks!

This will win the award for the biggest backhanded compliment of the year.

I get what you're saying about the assists, but Fran mentioned this in the postgame. OSU was overplaying their man-to-man D, passing lanes were closed. More guys had to make plays off the dribble, which Iowa did.

As for Gesell, one of his better games managing the offense. Not to mention his solid defense.
