Gesell reminds me of Hinrich

Hinrich averaged 5.3 pts and 3.5 assists per game as a freshman. Gesell will have a better freshman season. Just saying.

You realize the team that Hinrich was on had more talent than this team this year right? I think Gesell will probably average better numbers but I don't know if we can compare the two just yet.

I think Gesell will be the best point guard at iowa since Ronnie Lester. Better than Steve Carfino, better than jeff Horner. Cartwright was not a leader. Who else?
The way he controls the game is much in Hinrich style

Better than BJ? Time will tell. He is so in control of the game for a Freshmen. Awesome to see. So nice to have a PG that can hit the outside shot, as teams respect this our offense will open up more inside.

I see it... both are sharp shooting point guards who were just slightly undersized to play the 2 guard.

2 games against 2 bad teams and he's better than BJ, Steve, Kenny, Bobby, and the kid from Omaha whose name escapes me...

I'm impressed he seems to adapt. Fearlessness will be demonstrated on the road in big games....

Its a good comparison. Hinrich might have had a little more length, but their games out of high school are similar. Great scorers, leaping ability and great ball handlers. They both really get off the floor with their jump shots. They played very similar styles in high school.

I am not ready to compare him to anyone yet.

BUT

I do like his fearlessness...the moments don't seem too big for him and he has a short memory.
He is not afraid to attack..last night he saw the lane open up from 30 feet away and he attacked it.
Like BJ, he has a knack for baseline jumpers...BJ was on the right (or his dribble hand) side, Mike's is on the left
Like BJ, he looks comfy in the elbow shots (just to the side of the lane by the free throw line). BJ was a master at pulling up from that spot in transition. Mike has hit a few of those..those are money shots for point guards in transition offenses.

Mike has a real, real sweet stroke.

I think I slightly underestimated how much we are going to lean on Gesell this year. We are not going to be an NCAA bubble team unless he's scoring in the 11-13 ppg range and can consistently knock down 3's. The spacing that Gatens provided the offense last year is not going to be there if Gesell is not a major scoring threat.

Gesell needs to look for his offense more. He likes to spread the ball around and take open shots, but I think he has the ability to force the issue a little bit and put a lot of pressure on a defense. Hes playing well, but I think he could be a big time scoring weapon.

I like Gesell, he's a good player, a real good player. Kirk Hinrich is not a good comparison though. KH was 6-3" to 6-4" and long. From what I gather by looking at MG, he looks to be about 6-0 or 6-1 on the court. I don't care what the program says. He's got good strength and good quicks for a frosh though and a reliable jump shot. I think he might struggle with a long defender like Appling guarding him or some other guys he's going to see in the BIG.

I've decided that austinhawk is the best poster on this board. Sorry atomicblue

I wonder when the last time Bobby Hanson agreed with something that came out of your mouth! oh wait.. you have never said anything original on this site. Nevermind!

Kirk and Mike have some similarities...both are very fast, and handle very well. Good shooters..I do wish Mike as 2 inches taller tho, like Kirk.

Very happy with Gesell so far,but too early to make any firm comparisons.

Gesell is a career .444 shooter from three. Hinrich was just .430 during his Kansas career.

;)

All joking aside, as a freshman, Hinrich shot .313 from three.

I really didn't follow Hinrich's career because I was mad about him not staying in state but man he must of really picked it up his junior and senior years.
