Gesell and Woodbury

If these two players are as good as advertised (being ranked in the top 100 players in the country) and they come to Iowa, what else would Hawkeye basketball need to be contenders???

I like our team for 2011-2012 and beyond. The only needs that I see are a PG and a big man. Gesell can definitely play the point. Woodbury looks to have all the tools to be a starter in the B1G. With Basabe, Hubbard, Marble, May, McCabe, Olaseni, White, etc, what else is needed?

Fran is the man. Everything he has done, from player development to coaching to recruiting to communication, he has exceeded all my expectations. With or without Gesell & Woodbury, the Hawkeyes will be contenders, I have no doubts. That said, I would really love to have these two put Iowa over the top!!!

Well you can never have enough good guards. If Woodbury comes, he then teams with Basabe/Olaseni/Meyer, so Iowa would need to add another big for depth purposes.
Also, the SF position seems loaded right now, but a team cannot have enough 6-6 to 6-9 athletes.
Overall, Iowa needs to continue to add guys that are versatile and some higher level of athleticism.
It would be essential to have more than one true PG on the roster any year moving forward.

Gesell and Woodbury would be great additions, but it is going to be hard to land these recruits unless we at least make the NCAA tournament. Big time recruits seem to leave the state more times than not.... Kansas can .... it.

For out-of-state 4* recruits, they appear to need the bottomline proof at this time from Iowa, evidence Guerrero.

For local 4* recruits, they may just require to be convinced that generally the program is going in the right direction, that they can make it happen 'with' the program as opposed to by themselves 'for' the program. That's why you go after the local big-time talent.

So you are talking about 2012 and beyond. In 2012, the Iowa forwards will be
Basabe JR
Hubbard Sr
McCabe Jr
Oleseni So
White So
Meyer F
If you add Woodbury you would have another F.

The guards will be
May Sr.
Marble Jr
Ogelsby So
If they get Gessel it would be a F.

So, clearly this team needs way more guards. The question is how will Marble develop? Will he end up being a 3 or a 2?

I thought Hubbard was a shooting guard, is he not?

Hubbard is a three. I think the shooting guard references were thrown around as a joke about his past.

From everything I've read, and the few short videos, the closest Iowa comparison I can make is Tyler Smith- perhaps quicker, but I doubt as good as a passer. Basically a guy you can run your offense through, give him the ball on the wing and he can attack the rim- I believe he shot close to ten free throws a game in JUCO ball- but can also see the floor well enough to identify the open man when help comes.

Iowa hasn't really had a lot of prototypical three-men in recent memory, maybe what Fuller was becoming towards the end of his time here.

Lol, he wasn't a shooter he was a DRIVER and a slasher.....lol. Just joking around I am one that has no problem with his past but I hadn't heard the shooter remark before. Actually his long outside shooting will need some work but 16 feet out and closer he is pretty good. He will be a huge help and take some pressure off Cartwright. The entire chemistry of the team will be impacted in a positive way when he is on the floor.

Hubbard is NOT a good shooter by most accounts. He is a hustle scorer. Look for the front line this year to involve a lot of sets with Hubbard, Basabe, and White. What White gives up in bulk, he gets back in length. What Hubbard gives up in length, he gets back in strength. Mel is Mel.

Hubbard is a scorer not a shooter. The Tyler Smith reference is a good one. I don't know that he is as good as Tyler was though. Then again I am going on 2nd hand info, as I haven't seen Hubbard play.

Fran calls Hubbard a shooter, so I'm believe him until I see otherwise.

Personally, I think far too much is being made of Gesell and Woodbury. Are they nice players that would look great sporting black and gold? Definitely. I don't think we are destined for greatness if one or both sign and I don't think we are doomed if one or both go elsewhere. From a chest-beating pespective I get that we don't want to lose in state kids to out of state schools, but there are plenty of talented kids out there that can add to the talent level of the team.

This debate drips with irony, as when a out of state football recruit signs with us they are smart and we mock WI, IL, MI, etc. When an in state hoopster leaves, they are a traitor, chicken bleep, etc.

hubbard can likely play the 2 for fran. we havent had a shooting guard that can shoot for four years...why start now?

There is a lot of truth here and I agree with you. I think what we have is two kids we have been reading about the longest and it appears as though they have a shot at them....thus the "obsession" of sorts.

I STRONGLY disagree with this statement. Both are likely November signees. Well before Iowa even plays a game this season. Now if you are talking about the 2013 class then I see your point.

I would agree especially considering half of the top 150 have already signed.

Also for those doubting these two, just watch the Pangos video linked on the basketball forum. http://www.hawkeyenation.com/forum/basketball/29351-woodbury-gesell-pangos-aa-camp.html

Hoop Scoop ranked the attendees based on performance, Woodbury 30th and Gesell was ranked 53rd out of 119 Jr's and So's.

I agree that the PG spot needs to have two solid players for that position. Not just another "combo" player, such as a Marble or a Hubbard. Someone who could take the minutes, or in a pinch play the point fulltime, if fine but let's get a true point.

If Gesell & Woodbury both sign, I see another pg and a combo guard. With two combos a definitely possibility. What I like about Fran is he takes the best talent he can. If it means two combo guards, instead of a true point, so be it. I am all good with that....

I think Fran will land Gesell. He's made Gesell a priority and has avoided signing another pg this year even though an injury could do us in. Woodbury will end up at KU or NC if he gets offered.

I think Gessell is in the bank. Woodbury very iffy.

Im surprised that people are so confident that we land Gessel, not just singling you out BigD.

He grew up and attends high school in Nebraska and I have never even heard a mention that he grew up a Hawk fan.

I hope everybody is right though because he looks like a great player.
