Gatens

One thing with Gatens I have never understood is just how much criticism he gets. Is the one of the Top 10 Hawks of all-time, no, but is he one of the worst, no. He gets criticism that is undue because he has been the best player in one of the worst stretches of Iowa basketball, not his fault, it is reality. He has been the best player for Iowa for three years and will be again this year. If he doesn't lead Iowa in scoring or any other category, it won't be for the lack of effort. I expect to see Matt have a very good year, but still not the year that he would be capable of with a better supporting cast. That is not a knock on Gatens, it is a knock on the Iowa program and current roster.
There is some good young talent, but Gatens is a Senior and I am sure he doesn't want to be part of another losing season.
He plays hard every night and is a better player than given credit for. Say what you want that he wouldn't start on some other BIG teams, that maybe true, but maybe one or two that is it. Why this thread is started on him to question who should be on the floor is nuts. Gatens has bad games when he pushes too hard...the one thing is where is the other scorers?
Yeah Oglesby had a good game, put him on the floor for May, if Iowa isn't playing defense anyway why have him on the floor? I am not saying do this, but don't think he should play in Matt's spot. Iowa needs as many shooters on the floor at one time as possible...Cartwright-Gatens-Oglesby-White-Archie...three shooters and two people in Cartwright and White that can drive. Defense/rebounding may be an issue, but it has been with Basabe and May on the floor as well and that should be those two players strong points.
You should have titled this thread Basabe because he is the one that is the disappointment, he needs to step it up or begin to sit the bench...effort and attitude are what makes someone a player and if he has neither, then have fun watching.

Gatens played well today. He was the only one that could be said he played well the entire game.

Oglesby shot well when he played.

As a guy who came into the season down on Matt, he has surprised me, and have been the leader of this team so far.

Mel and Marble are the problems right now...

I hadn't seen anyone mention RDM but I thought he wasn't really in the game either, at least offensively. He was forced to run the point a decent amount and that hurt his slashing ability.

May be?

That's a dunk-a-thon waiting to happen against legit talent.

Matt played well vs. Creighton. In the 2nd half, we has really aggressive in taking his man off the dribble, fighting through screens, and playing tough D. He used his 8-12 ft bank shot very effectively.

I see no reason for this team not be using Matt an average of 34 min/G.

At this point I think it is safe to say Gatens and Ogelsby need to get more shots. Watching May brick shot after shot yesterday was painful and McCabe seems to be more comfortable 15 feet and in. With Archie being no threat down low, teams will immediately leave him to double Basabe. Pull Basabe out and let him shoot 10-15 footers. If the dude doesn't get into the game early, he checks out mentally.

I don't know what the deal was defensively, but we could not stop the interior pass from the top of the key. How many times did Gibbs throw a baseball pass to someone wide open under the hoop?

Gatens gave the most consistent effort out there of any player...and you can say that about Matt for most every game he's played at Iowa.

So many people harp on him for what he isn't and lose sight of appreciating him for what he is. It's not his fault he's basically been on three teams where he was the primary option. He should never have been in that situation.

This. Matt should be a BigTen team's 3rd scoring option, not its first. He would be a very, very good third scoring option.

May had a bad game, but his shot is much improved from last year.

Even after going 3-10 (0-3) yesterday, May is shooting 50% from behind the arc (7-14) and 52.5% overall from the field. That's not bad.

What I like best about May so far this year is that when he drives across the top of the lane, he is more often shooting the pull up jumper from there instead of picking up his dribble and desperately looking for someone to pass to.

I dont know the answer but how many of ogelsby's points came in the first half? I dont ever recall him being hot and taken out of the game. He scored late in the 2nd half.

You are correct.

FIRST HALF:
Josh logged 8 minutes and 1 point on 0-2 shooting.
1 REB, 0 TOs, 0 A.

SECOND HALF:
Josh logged 12 minutes and 13 points on 5-6 shooting.
0 RED, 0 TOs, 2 A, 1 Blk.

By contrast, Gatens put up 11 points in the first half and 2 in the second half.
