Gatens is shooting 29% from 3 since traveling to The Barn

Matt Gatens is a very nice player. He has limitations but that doesn't take away from the good things he does.

Gatens walked into Iowa a very developed player. Meaning his ceiling was not much higher. Remember, he was all-league as a frosh. But not at any other level as other guys blew past him as they developed. Also, he was supposed to be the anchor of the team, but he hasn't been able to keep the best players from drifting away.

Basically, this team desperately needs to keep moving toward other players being the team leaders.

He lacks confidence, not heart. Other than Cartwright and Cole, thats the team MO right now. Last night was a big set back as less fire seemed to exist from Fran on down. If that carries over to Saturday, what Fran gained all year could slide away with 2 more lay downs like MSU.

Gatens looks good when he keeps his range at 18 ft. or so. He's tried to reinvent himself as a 3 pt. specialist, probably out of necessity, and it just doesn't work for him.

He wasn't a great 3 pt. shooter in high school if memory serves me so what else should we expect?

Gatens was a decent 3 pt shooter the first 2 seasons....not this year tho and it has really hurt this team. He now is even missing ft's. If he doesn't turn things around, Fran will have to significantly reduce his minutes next year since 3 pt and ft shooting was his forte. He doesn't bring much else to the table, imo. I appreciate his hanging in there when others left, but this is about winning vs. losing and the health of the Iowa bball program. Fran/Iowa shouldn't have to overcome keeping Archie around for another year and having to play Gatens as additional impediments to progress for the program.

I agree, the sooner Lick's players are turned over, the better.

Posts like this drive me nuts. They start by thowing out a bunch of factually incorrect statmenets (Gatens is shooting a higher percentage from 3 and from the FT line this year than he did last year) and build off that with more garbage.

Where did all the hardcore Gatens defenders go???? Hello, where you at? Looks like DuffMan is the only one still holding out. Why are Jon Miller and his cronies not on here ripping this thread apart? Looks like the excuses have run out.

I changed my mind weeks ago.

With that said, I hope Gatens FINALLY hits his stride against Purdue.

LOL Hardcore Gatens defenders.

There are only two people in this world. Those with perspective, and those without. I'll let you try and figure out which group you are in.

Your perception is not reality.

I give you props for sticking with it it though, I guess. Sorry Bro, don't taze me.

The thread you started was ripped apart because it was a stupid opinion. This was started by pointing out how his shooting has been down over the last several games, which is a fact. Granted, there are plenty of stupid opinions contained within this thread, but the threads were not born equally.

He posted a fact, assuming it is correct what is there to rip apart? So you are at least suggesting that Gatens is a good shooter who is shooting poorly right now. For those that b!tch about Gatens what specifically would you like Fran to do RIGHT NOW? If someone comes along next year and outplays him in practice/games do you think Fran is not going to play this hypothetical person over him? Until that happens b!tch and moan away I guess if it makes you feel better.

If Eddy agrees with me I need to rethink my position.

Gatens shot 40% from the arc his first year. Last year,he was at 33%. This year he is at 33%. Those are the facts.
No doubt he is slumping from the arc the last 13 games....20 of 73...27%. But the rest of the team in those 13 games? 27 of 104....27%.

Matt shot very poorly after the hand surgery for like 4 games, then had a good stretch of about 6-7 games including the first 4 league games, but since then has cooled off.

No one on this team is a better shooter from the arc during league games...period.
They are all pretty miserable,unfortunately.
They all need to get in the gym and shoot a 1000 from the arc everyday all summer.

I'd rather have them shoot 1000 free throws every day.

Goes without saying that they should also be shooting free throws. Standard.

I was referring to the SI article on Derrick Rose, the 21 year old star of the Bulls...last summer he worked out with a trainer and Westbrook and Love, two other NBA players, and targeted his 3 point shot. He shot at least 1000 3 pointers a day,6 days a week for several months. His 3 point shooting has gone from 23% to 35% and he is taking a lot more of them. His trainer said that he tracked his percentage at these sessions...and went from 40% to almost 80% from 3 in practice. It can be done.

Matt's hand is still not 100%, for what it is worth.

I know you are probably not trying to single out Matt, and he has shot poorly for him the last 13 games, but the end result of your simply pointing out the facts is a thread full of comments ripping on Matt. So,maybe you could have mentioned this important fact in the opening comment?

I know some will call me a defender of Matt, and I am guilty as charged.
He is not shooting well, and I am surprised, but I still think he is giving it his full effort, and solid defense as Fran has pointed out and still have faith he will have a good senior campaign if he stays healthy.

Last year was easier, because we blamed the coach, who is being paid millions of dollars. That is always my preference...blame the guys getting paid. This year? Still a honeymoon for Fran...who I like. So that leaves the players...unfortunately. Circular firing squad...reload!
