Gatens injury blessing in disguise?? An optimistic outlook.

My only question is that why are we assuming he is out for the year or even a long period of time when there hasn't been and official announcement? Did I miss something? Before we cry wolf, let wait until a official announcement is made and then we can make all kinds of suggestions on how the coaches should handle the situation. I personally love the guy, but he is not irreplacable. I think we will be pleasantly suprised even if he is out for the year.

Bingo, may even be back for the first game. Hawkeye fans are constantly in the panic mode.

I agree that this could be a blessing in disguise but maybe not for the same reasons. My reasoning is that D. Marble is way more athletic than M. Gatens, although his experience is ahead of Marbles, it has been pure athletism that we have missed the last three years and I think this will allow for Marble to get reps that will only help his experience. Nothing against Gatens, but Marble can shoot and drive to the basket. Gatens has not in two years been able to drive to the basket. I think he's a great shooter but only a 1 tool player where marble can create a shot. I think there offer opposites of each other that will only make us stronger. Dont get me wrong, I want Gatens back, but the reps for Marble will be beneficial.

OK, Fran has shed a lot of light on Matt's status and it is clear that he will be back as soon as 3 weeks which would have him only miss the first two games vs SD,and LM.

I was for redshirting him if it went into January, but if he can be back on the floor by Nov 19, for the Jam, I am happy with that. As has been pointed out, we do need to try to get some momentum in the program ASAP and not having Gatens all year would hurt that momentum. While it is nice to think he would be here in 2013, by then Fran might have some solid recruits in the pipeline and on the court and Matts impact should be less than it will be this year.

WE can all go back to hoping for a fast start in the non-conference,and building recruiting momentum for spring and 2012.

I'm sorry, but if you think Iowa would fire Fran for any cause other than committing a crime or a major NCAA violation in the next 4-5 years, you're way off base. We are not going to fire a fourth coach in less than 13 years, and Gary Barta is not going to get to hire a third basketball coach. If we don't give Fran every benefit of the doubt in the world, we'll never get anyone good to come coach here. Why would they?

You may not like it, but Iowa could win 8 games this year and next year and Fran would still be the coach. That's just the reality of the situation we have put ourselves in. It especially has nothing to do with Iowa State or Fred Hoiberg.

Actually, Hoiberg does have something to do with it. 2012 and 2013 in Iowa are make it or break it years. If the Hoiberg experiment does not blow up and he gets the potential out of his sketchy players, they will be the state's premier program. It will be very hard for FM to recruit against that.

That being said, even if the Hoiberg experiment does blow up, if FM cannot close the deal with a good portion of the 2012 and 2013 instate players and cannot recruit a strong Big Ten class by 2013. He will not last until 2015. Now, I agree that he will get to year 4. But year five will only come with significant results in recruiting and/or wins by year 4.

I really don't think Fred will get any of the big instate 2012 guys. Ireally think it is between Iowa and top national programs. 2 reasons- we are still the big dog in this stae, and I think Fred has gone a different direction.

Hasn't coached a game and we are firing the new coach. BTW, it sound like Gatens will be back before Thanksgiving. Still want to redshirt? Some of you amaze me.

Hoiberg should not matter, that would be like saying that Belien-Crean-Smith-Lickliter should all be linked because they were brought in the same year. Should Indiana fire Crean because Iowa fired Lickliter and Belien and Smith have made the NCAA tourney...um, no.
As a true Hawkeye fan the only thing that concerns me about ISU is the we pummel them into the dirt and spit on them. It is a rivalry and I don't care who their coach is and who their players are, my intent is that Iowa beats them each year, if it is a good game then fine, if Iowa loses I am ticked...plain and simple.
When fans start comparing coaches, it is bad news. Like one poster that said McCaffery was linked to Altman at Oregon...really? How?
As far as recruiting goes...Iowa will get at least one of the 2012 Iowa guys and if they get more, then GOD bless them. The one thing though, I am not going to panic. For those of you who think it is a lost season, there are no lost seasons, unless the coach is fired after that season. Iowa has four starters back and will have a real rotation, when Gatens is back and it will be sooner than what people have freaked out about, Iowa will be better for it. Iowa has a stable program with Fran at the helm, just let him coach and quit putting him in the grave.
Let's face it, if ISU would have hired anyone not named Hoiturd, Iowa fans would care less.

I guess 'amaze' is an ok way to describe those on this thread that lost it behave, but it truly disgusts me and ironically it is the same group of negative posters time and again. They call themselves fans, but as the old saying goes, if we have fans like them then who needs enemies...

Or you could look at as we fired 3 coaches in quick succession why wouldn't we fire a 4th? If the fans don't come back(which will happen if there are 2 straight 8 loss seasons), and there isn't much prospect for the very next season after the 2 8 win seasons(which there won't be, teams don't just jump up to being in contention for the post season after 2 seasons of 8 wins) the university won't be able to keep him.

What 3 I am having some trouble here?
