Gasaway ranks Iowa 11th in B1G

I wouldn't go so much as to say Iowa is better than Indiana. True they beat them twice but if you look at the bigger picture Indiana seems to be playing everyone else alot closer on the road than Iowa does and they do have a signature win over Illinois. Iowa does not have a signature win.

They also only lost by one at Mich St. and played Minnesota and Wisconsin tough on the road as well.

I think that it's accurate to call Iowa the worst in the Big Ten.

So he just subtracts opponents points per possession from points per possession and ranks them solely on that?

So...

Team A 2-0
Team B 1-1
Team C 0-1

A over C 50-49
A over B 50-49
B over C 70-40

ppp oppp em
Team B 60 45 +15
Team A 50 49 +1
Team C 44.5 60 -15.5

So winning two close games isn't as good as splitting games, just as long as you dominate one of those games.

Don't let the stat nerds take over basketball as well as baseball.

How dare they rank us #11 when we clearly are #10. I'm outraged. Oh the humiliation and ignominy of it all. I'm demanding congressional hearings on this one. That win at IU was a beat down the likes of which is rarely seen at Assembly Hall. #11??? Sheesh. Join me in the we're number 10 chant.

I'm just glad NE doesn't join the conference until next year cuz then we would be 12.

Honestly, who cares what this guy thinks? We beat Indiana twice on the court, and that's what matters. I'm certainly not jumping up and down with excitement when making an argument that there is a team that is worse than the Hawks in the Big 10, but the only results that matter are the outcomes on the court, and we're 2-0 in this instance.

If you go head to head then you can say KState is equal to Kansas since they split??

They have beaten 2 ranked teams and played close in most their games. Plus they are missing their 2 best players.

Yeah we beat them twice but overall If I take of the black and gold glasses it is pretty obvious that Indiana is better then Iowa.

Like others said who cares who is the 10th best team in the conference. IT is going to be a long time before Iowa is relevant again.

You're arguing who's the tallest midget or the best looking ugly chick. This is obviously our building year and it doesn't matter if we're 10th or 11th. Lets just hope for top 10 next year!!

I'm more shocked to the fact that this idiot has Iowa State Community College at #11 in the Big 12 (future Texas' 10) over Texas Tech. Texas Tech BEAT ISCC and the fact that ISCC is a pathetic 1-9 in conference but TT is 3-7 makes no sense. Guess the power of God as ISCC's coach gives them a boost??

So is this the "Turning the corner" that everyone has been insisting on? We now have a legitimate argument that we are #10? What's next, a discussion on who had the biggest impact on music: O-Town or 98 Degrees?

Did anybody actually read this? He has them ranked #11 in per-possession efficiency. While it might be a good predictor of future performance, it is not necessarily an all-encompassing ranking.

Not sure why people freak out about the rankings of 2 bad basketball teams.

They both suck, they are the worst in their conferences or 2nd worst, I mean
when you pass the line of really bad does it matter to what degree?

Illinois is unranked, 6-6 in the Big Ten and 16-9 overall. Indiana beat Illinois by 3 at home and its a signature win?

Michigan State is unranked, 6-6 in the Big Ten and 14-10 overall. Iowa beat Michigan State by 20 at home and its not a signature win?

Am I missing something?

Good point. Certainly those victories are of a similar level of achievement.
However, Indiana has a brighter future. Maybe the writer was referring to that. Their recruiting classes the next couple of years are right up there with the best in the country. I like Oglesby, but, not a difference maker kind of guy. White? No idea. And hoping for guys like Woodbury, good not great, just makes me wonder where this thing is going.
If Penn St. ever wakes up and takes advantage of the fertile East coast recruiting ground...........where does that leave the Hawks?

This analysis is not about the future or who has more players hurt. It is about which team is better right now,as they stand. Iowa is better, marginally, because they beat IU twice, period. These BB sabremetrics do not offset on court outcomes.

If IU finishes stronger than Iowa, they could push ahead of Iowa,no doubt, but like Parcells says, when the seedings for the BTT come out...you are what your seeding says you are...ie...currently Iowa is seeded 10,and IU 11.

Illinois was ranked at the time, Michigan State was not.
