Gary Farta Is Now Obsolete

There aren't a lot of people here who defend Farta, but there are some. And those who do support him are staunch supporters. They say for all his faults the guy can raise a shitload of money and that his fundraising ability is off the charts. This is true by all accounts.

But it doesn't mean shit anymore. It means absolutely nothing in 2022 if you don't have an NIL program in place. Means zilch if you can't get guys to stay because everyone else in your conference is ahead of you on the NIL curve.

Farta has been at the helm of several scandals costing the university a whole bunch of money (even after insurance), and even worse costing the University parts of its reputation. He's a bumbling public speaker, and puts both feet in his mouth time after time after time. Is it a coincidence that Farta goes public saying NIL sucks and that they need to find a way to rein it in, and then a couple weeks later the most electric guy on our team transfers within our own division because of NIL reasons? Nope.

Gary Farta is now officially obsolete. He's a relic of an age that doesn't exist anymore. Where he should be is on the board of some podunk non-profit or hospital raising money like he's good at. He shouldn't be further contributing to the downfall of Hawks football. The guy is a paper tiger in every sense of the word. If your football coach and the donors supporting said coach are the ones making personnel decisions (which they are), and you have nothing else of value to contribute to an organization, then what good are you to that organization?

Someone tell us a legitimate, non-sarcastic, non-ironic reason why Gary Farta should continue as AD in any P5 athletic department. I'm not waiting around for an answer because there isn't one.

Farta is the prime example of the "scarcity myth" that has driven things like CEO salaries and college admin salaries to astronomical heights. A reasonable person can look at Aaron Judge or Shohei and see why he's worth $20 million bucks or whatever. Hell, I can even get behind Kirk Ferentz getting paid what he gets paid. But these fucking admin positions making 7 or sometimes 8 figures is just a joke. Yes, Farta raised a lot of money, but guess what. So did fucking everybody else because we just came off about a 12 year unprecedented bull market in stocks and real estate and the baby boomers who are big donors are absolutely flush with cash. Let's see him raise money in an environment like 2002 or 2009. Hell, the COVID bear market only lasted something like 3 days!

I guarantee you that there are at least a dozen people just on this board who if put through some classroom training on crap like Title IX/compliance and getting on the job training for a year, maybe two, could waltz into Farta's job and not miss a beat. You pay me a million bucks a year and I'll gladly listen to Chet from Oelwein bitch about our shitty right guard for two hours at a time.

For the record, I’m still hearing crickets on the above from you Farta fans out there.

Mostly silent because I just don‘t get this NIL thing, in terms of the responsibility that rests with the University. I have been too lazy to become familiar with these programs at other BT Universities. Are we really behind the 8 ball? Honest question. I know you and others believe we are. You may well be right. In my job as an educational administrator, I tended to be cautious about implementation of new programs. In short, let some others go out aggressively and learn from their errors. Have we lost anyone to better NIL’s through the portal? Have we lost any commitments for that reason? Has our 2023 recruiting success been impacted? Again, I just don’t know.

While I'm with you about not quite understanding it. IMO it's something you simply cannot "let others go out aggressively" on and learn from their mistakes. It appears as though average to quality players are as much about the NIL income as they are the name on the front of the jersey, so if you can't find a way to pony up and at least stay out in front or even on par with the others your in trouble. Unfortunately were already in the rearview and it appears to have already cost us.

If we can't get something figured out soon were on our way to becoming a top tier JUCO program that offers 4 year degrees. I say JUCO because the good players will stay a year or two at most to improve their stock and move on and our roster will begin to completely turn over every other year.

Not a defender, but to reply. Because he brings in a lot of money and seats are filled. Until that changes, Barta will be there.

Almost everything about NCAA athletics is now a relic.

...legitimate, non-sarcastic, non-ironic reason why Gary Farta should continue as AD in any P5 athletic department. There. Hope you didn't wait too long.

Charlie Jones is really the first transfer from Iowa BB or FB that one can say....that hurts. That is why Barta is now a relic. Others may have hurt some in the long run, but at the time, this one hurts. There aren't but a handful of programs that couldn't use a Charlie Jones this year for one year.

Gary should go raise money for some new teeth. lol

Here is the deal, we have all praised Barta and KFs fund raising skills. Well, doesnt this new landscape fall right into their hands? Hit those boosters up to pay the players.
You cant tell me the only player we have blatantly bought was a shitty punter? We can fo better then that.

Exactly. This should be right in Barta's wheelhouse. Raising money is like breathing to him. NIL, even against some of the big boys shouldn't be that difficult.

You’re correct that it was non-sarcastic and non-ironic, but it’s not a legitimate reason he should be an AD in P5 college sports. He’s anti NIL but NIL is the future whether he likes it or not. Athletic departments need people in charge who can be proactive and creative in coming up with ways to attract and retain players.

Add to his NIL ignorance the fact that he has zero sway over employment choices in the biggest revenue sport, and is responsible either fully or in part for several scandals, it makes him a net zero benefit to the U. Those people shouldn’t be held onto.

So, where do you put Ferentz? Jurassic Park (as a Dino), 2001 a Space Odessy, Black Pistol Fire (Hope in Hell) or Christina Hendricks (Good Girls), Mr. Rogers or Sponge Kirk Square Pants. All kidding aside, where do you put Kirk in this?
