Gary Farta Is Now Obsolete

There aren't a lot of people here who defend Farta, but there are some. And those who do support him are staunch supporters. They say for all his faults the guy can raise a shitload of money and that his fundraising ability is off the charts. This is true by all accounts.

But it doesn't mean shit anymore. It means absolutely nothing in 2022 if you don't have an NIL program in place. Means zilch if you can't get guys to stay because everyone else in your conference is ahead of you on the NIL curve.

Farta has been at the helm of several scandals costing the university a whole bunch of money (even after insurance), and even worse costing the University parts of its reputation. He's a bumbling public speaker, and puts both feet in his mouth time after time after time. Is it a coincidence that Farta goes public saying NIL sucks and that they need to find a way to rein it in, and then a couple weeks later the most electric guy on our team transfers within our own division because of NIL reasons? Nope.

Gary Farta is now officially obsolete. He's a relic of an age that doesn't exist anymore. Where he should be is on the board of some podunk non-profit or hospital raising money like he's good at. He shouldn't be further contributing to the downfall of Hawks football. The guy is a paper tiger in every sense of the word. If your football coach and the donors supporting said coach are the ones making personnel decisions (which they are), and you have nothing else of value to contribute to an organization, then what good are you to that organization?

Someone tell us a legitimate, non-sarcastic, non-ironic reason why Gary Farta should continue as AD in any P5 athletic department. I'm not waiting around for an answer because there isn't one.
Reasons to keep him:

1. 2021 Big West football champions.
2. 2022 Big Ten men’s basketball tournament champions.
3. 2022 Big Ten women’s regular season and tournament champions.
4. 2021 Wrestling national champions. Top 4 in 2022.

I’m not convinced NIL is the future long term. I think you will see more of an NFL model in the future. Players will be employees.

Bruh, even if the players were employees, which I am skeptical of due to the ramifications of having to pay the gals equally to comply with Title IX, the NCAA still cannot meaningfully regulate NIL due to the fact it is the child of a Supreme Court case. So even if players were paid by the schools, when A&M has a $50 million NIL slush fund that is what is gonna drive talent, not some skimp ass twenty grand from the schools.

Mostly silent because I just don‘t get this NIL thing, in terms of the responsibility that rests with the University. I have been too lazy to become familiar with these programs at other BT Universities. Are we really behind the 8 ball? Honest question. I know you and others believe we are. You may well be right. In my job as an educational administrator, I tended to be cautious about implementation of new programs. In short, let some others go out aggressively and learn from their errors. Have we lost anyone to better NIL’s through the portal? Have we lost any commitments for that reason? Has our 2023 recruiting success been impacted? Again, I just don’t know.

In the college football business, if you ain't in front of the 8 ball you're behind it. We ain't in front of it. In your job as an educational administrator your decisions were things like "Should we update to the current version of Oregon Trail or should we convert our card catalog to digital and wait until next year on the Oregon Trail upgrade?" and it didn't matter one iota if you waited a year or two. In the college football game, if you get way behind over two years you could irreparably harm the program because a lot hinges on momentum. Once it's gone, it's gone. See, e.g. Texas, Tennessee and Florida State.

Charlie Jones just walked out over NIL. Getting data on recruits is harder, but in hoops we definitely got smoked in the transfer market due to lack of NIL.

1. Lost 42-3 in title game, lost bowl game to dog shit Kentucky team.

2. Lost in first round in the worst fucking Iowa basketball game bince the Lickliter era.

3. Lost to Creighton early in the tournament.

4. Thanks to Tom Brands and the goodwill Dan Gable built up long before numbnuts ever even heard of Iowa City.

I know this is a what have you done for my lately culture, but Barta;s conference championship number was terrible for the 1st 10-15 years of his career at Iowa.

Don't understand why the big guns in Iowa business haven't been putting together their deals with Iowa's top athletes already, even without the university's blessing. Hawkeye's are the biggest show in Iowa are the best NIL opportunities for brands with or without Barta. It's all legal now. That being said Iowa has to at least smile for the players about their NIL opportunities. Brian has to at least convince dad that this is necessary.

And if NIL doesn't last, we go back to the old bagman networks? I just don't see that at all. Way more money in play with schools with well-financed boosters. And it's not only completely legal, it's above board.

NIL is here to stay. And you’re going to seriously bring up wrestling?

Barry Farta has absolutely nothing to do with wrestling success whatsoever. Not in any way. Dan Gable and Tom Brands built Iowa wrestling into what it is today.

You need to brush up on causation vs correlation. Just because teams have had some success during the time he’s been in office doesn’t mean he’s a driver behind it.

I'm almost a little surprised the Hawks didn't lose Kris to another school. Once he started blowing up in workouts for NBA scouts and the word got out that his game now looked a lot like Keegan's, how much do you think he could have commanded on the open market?

He could have said he had an undisclosed offer for a million dollars and started a bidding war up to two. Maybe more. Hell, some coaches would have probably personally paid a portion of the cost.

I’m sure his eyes are on a much bigger prize than NCAA ball. He wants to make the big time and Iowa is a great place to stand out from a crowd if you have skills.

Why would he want to go find a big name team where the talent is closer to his level? Smarter to stay the big fish in a smaller pond, especially when the NBA is pretty much a certainty if he’s healthy.

If I'm not mistaken, Kurt was also at Iowa long before Sharta hit the scene and all Sharta has to do is watch over the non-revenue sports, avoid getting sued for over $10 million in any individual judgment, and listen to whatever Kurt wants done.

He's long past needing to stand out from the crowd if NBA teams were flirting with using a first rounder on him. (Plus having an identical brother who might go top 5 sort of ensures folks know who he is, too). Why not take $2 mill for the year (per OK4P) AND go play in a big time environment with a shot at a tourney run? Even if he blows his knee out in October, he'd have a pretty nice start to life. Or if things do sideways part way through the season, just take your $2 mill, go back to training full time for the draft, and fly around to see Keegan play now and then...
