Gary Barta Now a Member of the CFP Selection Committee

Found it necessary to do a little proofreading and correction:

College Football Playoff Anoints Gary Barta to Selection Committee

Yeah, that's the ticket

Be nice for us to win a big 10 regular season title in anything before he goes off and does this stuff on the side. Haven’t won a regular season title in any sports in a few years. That is a reflection on him.

Well it's no secret that Bob Bowlsby got us in to the 2005 NCAA's when he was the chair of that selection committee. We finished 7-9 and in seventh place of what was then an eleven team conference. We did have a nice showing in the Maui Classic that year and outlasted favored Michigan State in the conference tournament quarterfinals (before getting knocked out the next day by an Alondo Tucker buzzer beater that I had the great fortune to be watching at a bar in Madison) but it was a tumultuous, inconsistent year.

Anyway, Bowlsby was the chair and three of the last at large teams to slip in under the door were Iowa, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa. Coincidence? Right!

I was in a bar within walking distance of the Kohl Center on Saint Patrick's day weekend when Erek Hansen first put Iowa up with seconds to go vs Wisconsin in the conference tournament semifinals, then saw Alondo Tucker win it with a three at the buzzer. I was there for the girls high school state championships. The only thing worse than a Wisconsin gut punch is a Wisconsin gut punch in a Madison bar on Saint Patrick's weekend.

The top of the conference proved to be very strong that year. Illinois and Michigan State both made the final four, Wisconsin the elite eight.

I remember Iowa played all Final 4 teams that year, beat 2 of them on neutral courts and took #1 Illinois to OT on the road.

That 3 season stretch from 2003-2004 to 2005-2006 was an odd one. And ultimately was Alford’s undoing at Iowa. He had some talent and Iowa won some tough games. That 2003-2004 team was decent, finished 4th in the B1G, probably 2 wins short of the tournament that year. Had some very close losses.

We all know ifs and buts, it’s just interesting how close Iowa was during that stretch to actually being a good program but Pierce decided to be a criminal, Alford made the situation worse, and a few close losses turned promising seasons sour.

I thought we were going to get Illinois that night. It was one of the last games that Pierce played for us, perhaps 7-10 days before his dismissal. It was a spirited game that like you said went into OT. But to have the type of year Illinois had you have to live somewhat of a charmed life and have a lot of things go your way and that night was no exception.

That was certainly an odd stretch. Remember Sean Sonderleiter simply leaving the team in late January of 2004? A senior with only weeks to go just up and leaves. A couple of years earlier Courtney Scott left in part because he felt Alford was allowing Reggie Evans to get too physical in practice. OK, whatever.

I noticed he replaced Gene Smith, Ohio St AD. If Smith couldn't get OSU in two years in a row.....how will Barta help the B1G?
You do understand that the point of serving on a committee isn’t to promote your own needs...right? He certainly isn’t there to help iowa. They are the farthest from those discussions as you can possibly get

Great, he doesn’t watch the iowa games how is he watch every game? If he watch iowa games he would know there is an offensive coaching issue.

Absolutely right. He's there to sign contracts.

This is Gary's final act before he rides off into the sunset and retires. One last hurah for a long tenured AD
