Gary Barta listed as candidate to take over at Minnesota

If I were an Iowa fan I would be begging for Barta to leave for the Minnesota job. He's just an awful AD. You guys can do better and have had better AD's than him

He made one bad hire in Lickliter but did the right thing and ate Lickliter's buyout after just 3 years and seems to have the program going in the right direction with Fran.

Just competed a 40 million dollar makeover of Carver facilities and has another huge project underway with the football practice facility. Donations are at an all-time high for the athletic department and the athletic department has been self-sustaining for years now.

How is he awful?

That was one heck of a bad hire though. Damn near killed the basketball program.

None of our sports programs (that I can think of) have improved under his tenure.
 


You make a move upward(see Gene Smith) or lateral based on circumstances, at this point in Barta's life/career why would he want to take a step back?

And he recognized that and took the necessary steps to fix it, including using a huge chunk of change to buy out Lick...not an easy thing to do for an AD.

Did Barta hire Brands?

I've said this a couple times on here and I'll say it again........Kirk Ferentz just completed a 40 million dollar makeover of Carver Facilities. Barta had nothing to do with it. That's what happens when you have a great program like Ferentz does and he wins Orange Bowls. Donations go up and you can take that money and re invest it in your program.

His handling of the Lick hire was awul. His handling of the Fran hire was awful. Not the hiring of Fran but how it all went down. He allowed a lot of other coaches to publicly say no to Iowa when the good AD's do things privately and you never hear who they went after.

His handling of the issues going on lately are terrible. He's an awful PR guy. AWFUL!

Iowa can do much better than Gary Barta.

No, Brands was hired by Bowlsby. The only coaches that I am aware that Barta hired was Lick and then Fran.

I don't know. I'm not going to pretend to know who a good AD is out there for Iowa. I just see what I see and talk to enough people at Iowa to know that Barta isn't great at his job. Of course he is following Bolwsby who was great

but you know enough to know a bad AD, right?

barta is fine. i dont think he is an overly impressive man but i also realize that he was hired because of his fund raising experience and he has more than lived up to his billing.
 


The Clone fans don't like him because he stood up to Pollard and forced the contract to be renegotiated so Iowa wasn't getting jobbed financially.

Was it coaches publicly saying they turned Iowa down or was it coaches responding to questions from the media asking if they have been contacted by Iowa or are interested in the Iowa position?

Big difference IMO.

So everything that goes well in the athletic department is because of KF but everything that goes wrong in the athletic department is Barta's fault?

You cant have it both ways. He deserves credit when donations are at an all-time high and he deserves blame when something goes wrong inside the department.

And Barta>Pollard.

All credibility gone....Bob Bowlsby wanted to hire Terry Allen to run Iowa's football program...and he was a world class jerk.
