Any of you been following that whole deal? It was weird when he bailed on Wisky for Oregon ST and now he's stepped down from there not taking 12 mil that he's got coming. Bashing his assistants left and right to some writer in the media out there. Who does any of that quite frankly? I can't see this guy getting another gig of significance. If there's more to the story(s) I'd be curious to know for curiosities sake. Makes one wonder what'd Wisky be like if he'd have never left...

I get the idea that he is too invested personally, like he can't handle losing and the off the field parts of the job. Some guys just are't wired for that kind of job.

Rumors flew that he didn't like Wisconsin's admission standards (which hasn't seemed to keep Fitz from being competitive, not to mention David Shaw at Stanford). Also, it was acknowledged that he's a "West Coast guy", which I guess I understand.

I'm thinking he didn't "volunteer" the forgoing of his buyout so much as have it "suggested" to him after the revelation of the text messages he exchanged with a media type out there.

Definitely a strange happening, though.

My intial thought, which was just speculation, was that he had some kind of personal scandal that everybody wanted to keep quiet. Not at the Jerry Sandusky level, because then he would be in jail. But maybe a sleeping with a college age student type scandal.

But now i think its just job related. He was told to fire his assistants if he thinks they suck. But instead he decided to fall on his sword and fire himself, saying he was ultimately responsible. Not many people would do that and give up that money. There had to be some extra level of stress that affected his judgement.

That's interesting. Could something like that be enough to prevent him from getting it though? Did he have a clause of some kind in his contract? I can see those texts being released being embarrassingly bad and it sure wouldn't make your working environment any good going forward. But if I had 12 mil coming to me and all I had to do was keep working or wait till they fired me to get it I know what I'd do. As I'd mentioned I don't think he's getting another gig of importance due to it anyway so he may as well cash out. Wisky has to be glad things worked out the way they have that's for sure.

I don't know how his contract looks, but I can't imagine the revelation of those text messages didn't figure in somehow. Remember, for every gripe that coaches (cough Kirk Ferentz cough) and their agents milk the system, there is an equal & opposite higher up in an athletic department or university administration that's just as bad.

I just have a hard time believing he completely and freely gave up his buyout. Kudos if he did, though.
