Garmon in Iowa City Sunday

He is 19. Hmm, I wonder if his schooling was delayed because of cancer?

That is a good guess, or he could just be one of those kids that is older in their grade. We all knew one or two kids from highschool that had months on everybody, sometimes even a year because they transfered from a different state or district where cut offs are different.

I floated this story to another B1G fanbase's message board and they unanimously thought that even a 1-game suspension would be a bit much. Ultimately they didn't think it was a big deal. "Do some community service," or something.

I think we see Garmon early and often.

The thing is... the transition from HS to college is already a hard one, doubly so when you're far from home, doubly-doubly so when you're also playing D1 ball. As unbelievably stupid as Garmon was, it's hard to imagine any positive from piling on more stress to the situation... if your primary goal is to help the kid transition and succeed in school, football and life.

It's a tough balance. You want to send a message without driving him into the ground.

You speak as if you've experienced this first hand. Which sport did you play again, on the D-1 level?

Could have been held back. Could have started late. There was an approach a couple decades or so ago in some districts to start 5th graders in an "alternative kindergarten," then move them to kindergarten at age 6 and begin the normal class progression from there. The idea being that it would give the kids one more year to mature and adapt to rigors of the classroom.

Having done that with our first son, I now view that as the wrong approach for most 5-year-olds, who typically are more than ready to get on with formal schooling by that time, if not earlier.

There's really only one problem with twitter. It should be called "LOOK AT ME>>>LOOK AT ME>>LOOK AT ME!!!"

The sad thing about contemporary American culture, the less attention we deserve, the more narcissistic we get. Voila, twitter - facebook - myspace - mytube - mykardashian.net.

None. I've only experienced the first two first hand.

Tks for sincere response.
Next question: how did you cope with the first two? Well/seamless, or did you struggle?

Actually, never mind the follow-up questions. Every individual is different, and your experiences (or mine) from ~30 years ago are irrelevant.

It's ok. I really struggled the first semester, but was solid by the end of the year. But I was blown away by the daily schedules of athletes I shared classes with. It's easy for us non-athletes to say "you're on scholarship, suck it up!" but that fact doesn't help with homesickness or adjusting to a daily grind at a whole 'nother level from high school.
