Game Story: Resilient Hawkeyes Pull It Out in Ames

Yes, resilient hawk players win despite KF's horrendous clock management and some questionable pass calls on 3 and 1. Rob when are you and other reporters going to ask KF questions about why they aren't using timeouts to get more plays off late in games and at the half.

Two games in a row and it has been happening for years. The hawks are supposed to be able to run the ball but I was surprised on 4th and a foot on the first drive the decision was FG. And Stanley is really showing he can plow on a QB sneak. I think on the second drive the hawks had 2nd or third and 1 and it was play action where Nate turned his back and got sacked.

But time management could of and easily should have lost this game. Crazy

Hats off to the players for being so gritty and determined.

Great win. Honestly had we lost I would have been like oh well. Weird game with the weather then a trick play and busted coverage for the two clown scores. We were very green in the secondary. Great time for a bye week to get healthy. I can’t wait to get Brents back.

Other thoughts:
-Linderbaum is the real deal
-WRs had another good day I thought
-Kickers were huge
-Not a fan of our “raider” pass rush look. It’s just not working
-Runningbacks looked good when they got chances

Oh and I forgot about the 3rd and long to the tight end where he went out of bounds to stop the clock before the last lucky punt. What was that as far as clock mgmt? YOu can run the ball and punt if need be after running the clock down to about 50 seconds.

Yep and how on earth do you have a delay of game when punting is obviously what you're going to do? I've even seen Iowa have DOG coming out of a timeout.. But at this point I've accepted that bad clock management etc. comes with the territory with this staff.

But, all that said, glad to have the win. An ugly win over the Clowns still tastes sweet.

3-0.

The raider was at least giving it a different look. The basic pass rush was non existent without it. Part of that was ISUs scheme. I thought this was BFs worst called game this year. The ISU defense is a different scheme and they have some good athletes which Iowa did a poor job at creating mismatches and getting away from tendencies besides the first drive

You’re right on the raider giving a different look. Just don’t feel like the guys get a good get off. I was high on Golston last year but man he’s been non existent over there. Miss Anthony Nelson more than most would have guessed.

I didn’t mind BFs play calling except for that fourth and inches play action. That should have been an auto sneak. Sloppy field and weird game with the delays. Both teams moved the ball between the 20s just stalled when they got close. Smith could have made that catch.

Doesn’t KF do a call in show? Why don’t you try it?

It’s a high percentage pass play. But it has to be done to wide side for just that reason. It was stupid. But Cyclone said we can double down on stupid.

Lol, it is just sooooooo easy to make these calls. I just wish we could rely on your supreme intelligence to make all the calls, because they all turn out 100% just like you envision.

haha, yes the clowns helped us out. Well it is a high percentage pass but not even thrown to get a first down going to a slower receiver 5 yards short of the first down.

And yes you need to throw that ball inside so the throw doesnt carry him to the sideline. Just a lot of bad in that play when a simple run or QB sneak would have melted the clock to about :45 seconds prior to the final punt.

But yes any win is great

Oh I dont mind KF going for the FG to start the drive but please on god of god's DeanVogs tell me how this is not terrible clock management a couple of times in this game and once last week. Please tell me.

I think before we criticize the coaches for questionable play calling and clock management, we have to know that was an extremely charged up atmosphere with a very aggressive team, and there was a high chance in the first half that we could have lost it and gotten blown out.

So in the first half on 4th down, the smart play is to take the points. If they stop us on 4th down that is even more momentum for them. At the end of the first half, make sure at worst we go into half 7-6. If we burn timeouts and give them too much time on the clock, we risk going in 10-6, 10-3 or eve 14-3. KF played for the fourth quarter this entire game.

I dont fault the throw on 3rd down on that last possession either, a first down wins it. Weiting should not have run out of bounds of course, it was a bad route. But at that point the coaches were trying to win it.

Most of that was smart football tonight.

I would like to see the hawks go more uptempo or no huddle going into the 3rd and short situations to help them. They let the defense adjust and takes away some off their advantage
