Given all the attrition we've had on the DL ... losing ANYBODY at this juncture is a pretty significant loss.

Furthermore, it gets magnified all the more because we're going to be losing THREE guys on the depth chart at DE (Binns, Daniel, Forgy).

Anyhow, here's a brief list of guys at DE entering the 2012 season:

Alvis - arguably the top guy returning at DE. Mind you, he'll have a chance of seeing action at DT this year just because the coaches want to get him on the field ASAP.

Gaglione - it seems like he really has made some strides at DE. Not bad for a former LB who had trouble making the transition to the DL. On the flip side, he's been oft injured and has little to no game experience. It's not clear how much more experience he'll have by the time 2012 rolls around.

Bigach - Technically he's spent a lot more time at DT. However, given our dire need at DE ... he might have to slide over to DE in order to help us out there.

Hardy - I like his promise ... however, he doesn't yet have any experience ... so I don't yet know what to expect from him. Definitely a kid who could make a splash for us on the strong-side.

Trinca-Pasat - Has spent more time at DT ... however, the coaches will probably will be willing to trying anybody and everybody at DE in order to get the best 4 on the field.

McMinn - He'll be just a RS FR and I'd be shocked if he's physically developed enough yet at that junctue to be a major contributor.

Ott - TR FR ... no chance that he contributes early.

REMARKS: I'm truly disturbed by looking at our DE depth for 2012. We'll definitely be hurting there ... and the only guys who really inspire much confidence there are Alvis and Hardy.

It happens Homer, relax….:D

I think this is about as animated as I’ve seen you. We’ve had bigger roster issues than this before. We will have other DE’s as we move forward….imo this staf does their best work when they are in scramble mode……

I share Homer's concern. You just cannot lose this many guys from one position and continue to maintain the Iowa tradition of excellence on the d-line.
Maybe Iowa should have offered that kid out of Iowa Western that went to Oregon?
Losing French to Oregon also hurts.
I guess this is the problem with having to go out of the midwest for recruits...they are a higher risk of becoming homesick and leaving?
Iowa needs to score some juco or frosh d-ends that are ready to play immediately,eh?

I think Iowa is doomed if he leaves. One guys makes a team in football. For sure.

That wasn't the point.

If you look at Iowa's O ... it's poised to potentially be a pretty dominant unit in 2012.

What you want then is for competition on D to be at a high enough level so that the D will be really strong too. That way the group will develop more quickly. And, if that happens, the D could have a chance to be really good too.

One man clearly DOESN'T make the team ... however, EVERYBODY is important. EVERYBODY still plays a role!

And, I for one would LOVE to see the Hawkeyes have a special season in '12. However, until I see more guys emerge on the DL ... I have no idea what to expect. Things could certainly go either way. However, as a fan ... and obviously a rabid one at that ... ideally I'd like to have a better idea of how we're standing in the future.

I anticipate that Jaleel Johnson is a guy who could make an early impact at DT. Thus, between Bigach, Carl Davis, Cooper, J. Johnson, and Trinca-Pasat ... I'm pretty confident that Iowa will have a shot to have a good interior defensive line. My bigger concern simply regards our DEPTH at DE. I also have a somewhat smaller concern about what sort of play-makers we have on the DL too. Of course, we'll have to see how their development goes first before jumping to any conclusions.

As for filling possible future "holes" ... I would imagine that Spears and/or Alston could potentially slide over to DE and be impact players for us. By a similar line of reasoning ... AJ Derby could project there for us too. Of course, if we get Coe back after the '12 season ... he could be an impact player for us at DE.

I'm not going off any sort of deep end or anything. I just have hopes for how things look for us in 2012. I don't doubt that we'll field a good team then. The bigger question is whether we'll be fielding a BCS-bowl contending team or not.

Honestly if you look back..........we have lost D-linemen, by the handful since way early on. I can't believe the coaches are terribly surprised. Disappointed for sure, but not surprised.

I went back to 2002 recruiting class and right off the bat, Steve Burch, Warren McDuffie, Eric Zilisch, Larry Thomas, Wesley Thibeaux……

In 2003 it was Alex Wilcox, George Eshareturi and Richard Kittrell…Iwebema and Mattiosn were in that class

In 2004 it was…..Ted Bentler, Lucas Cox, Grant McCracke, Ettore Ewen….King and Kroul were of course in that class….

The point being, this isn’t new, it will continue to happen and yet we have still produced quite a tradition….

Homer,

I understand your concern. You listed people currently in DL but also possible that someone like Spears or Alston will become a DE, which could help. Depends on how the LB situation works out.

I also have a more positive outlook about McMinn. I think he is potential speed rusher who will be a factor in 2012. I think he had shoulder surgery last Spring so will probably redshirt and build up this Fall.

We're going to be fine. Trinca-Pasat had 20 sacks for me during his senior season on NCAA Football '12.

Why is everyone so worried when we have production like that coming from the young guys?

There are several ways to attack a lack of depth at DE:
-Scheme around it. Probably the most obvious but most difficult. Consistent schemes is one of Iowa's greatest strengths, so running more 3-4 doesn't really seem to be in the cards.
-Recruit JuCo. If you get the right guy, this is a good option for an immediate fix.
-Switch positions of current players. A few reasonable options would be Dakota Getz, Austin Vier, or Jake Duzey.
