Further Improvement

The win was ugly, but a much stronger game on both sides. Last season, the 10-7 loss saw Iowa produce only150 yards-at home in a loss. The Clowns chewed up 313 yards of Kinnick turf.

This season, on the road, Iowa's offense scored 13 points-not good but better than 7. Added 85 more yards with 235 today. Only gave up 290, and a pick 6-a better defensive performance as well.

My complaint, we need to throw on about half the current running plays.

Actually, next week I'd work on the run game, but when we have travel to Sexual Assault Valley I think smart ball would be lining up in those run formations but come out of them looking to throw and throw more to wide receivers on quick hitter plays.

The offense has a way to go but Iowa is better this year than last. That loss last year was "shoulda" win that was a significant part of the below average regular season.

Hawks cracked 100 rushing yards. That's improvement.
Granted, take away one play and they were at their season average of 90.

ISU may have the worst QB in the country. The clowns ran pretty well but we had no concerns about the pass.

I predict PSU beats us real bad but should hopefully wake us up.

I appreciate the “Sexual Assault Valley” callout. Annual reminder that Pedo State should not have a football program.

Two weeks in, and we’ve seen life on offense. We’d all love to see more life, but we know Kirkball, and this season rests on the health of QB1. I don’t think we see this sort of offfensive conservatism against Pedo St., largely because they are a team that will score on our defense.

Give Patterson and Johnson equal opportunists next week, and let the better performer be the bellcow the following week. I don’t know what happened to Kaleb, but Patterson was just better today, and Kaleb wasn’t great last week, either.

Finally, we have got to get more out of our WRs, but even there, I think they made progress over week 1. We need to hope for Cade’s health to continue to improve and that it all comes together over the next two weeks.

All kidding aside. I give Brain a C+ on the day. Maybe a B-.
He wrinkled it up a bit.
A bit of luck/bad luck and some missed execution kept anywhere between 11 and 18 points off the board.

He outcoached his opponent.
Agree with the above, but you can’t have it both ways. Execution, etc., but for real this year. The plays are there, guys just gotta make them. That’s more than we can say of the offense last year.

This was a huge step up in competition and we improved on both sides of the ball. Lack of open receivers is going to be a problem all year and it feels like Cade wants the deep shot on every play. Penn St. will not be pretty but the rest are winnable.

The detestable Pedos and their big as a full moon asshole coach might just open up a can on us. But I think Iowa will be favored in the next 8 games. Bucky losing at home at the Wahoos or whatever Washington St. is called. Illinois took a bad loss. Nebraska is 0-2. Still convinced Iowa is 10-2 and wins the last ever Western Division title. If forced to choose I think we are more like 11-1 than 9-3.

Anybody hear about the status of starting CB Harris?? Was it ever official that he had a 2-game gambling suspension? I never heard anything publicly. Is he expected back to W.Michigan?

I believe a 3 game suspension. Lee will be the starter for one more week.

Let’s be honest here. What would have happened if we played a freshman QB like ISU did? Yikes!

You're right about the West Division competition appearing to be pretty weak thus far. Iowa should be favored to beat everyone in the Divsion based on what we have seen.

Better this week? Yes. Still over throwing wide open guys. Guess that's a Hawkeye QB trait or tradition. And I still say our plays are scripted. Wide open guys down field and we throw the check down. Either the play is meant for the damn check down every time or Ferentz puts blinders on our QB's.

That was a classic recent era Kirk/Brian game. Once we got up 17-3 they knew they had enough points. They weren't going to give up the cheap score by giving ISU a short field.

They were going to make ISU earn everything they got. And chew up a lot of time doing it.

This^^^. Once Castro ran back the pick 6 it was essentially over and we weren't going to do anything remotely risky.

I thought that Kaleb could've/should've broken the tackle on our last possession on his third down run. If he gets outside it would have been game over at that point. To Patterson's credit, he does an excellent job of staying north and south and is capable of breaking tackles.

Utah State won 78-28 today. Not saying Iowas win shouldn’t have been more dominant, but I think we saw improvements from week 1 to week 2. Maybe Utah State isn’t as garbage as some might have thought… at least their offense.
This is the most Iowa take ever. They beat Idaho State. By the way, Idaho State managed 420 yards of offense and scored 28 points. We aren’t very good no matter how you spin it. The good news is we don’t have to be that good to have a shot at the West.
