Further Improvement

On a positive note, I did like how Iowa mixed it up on 3rd and 2 today instead of just running it every time. I also liked how many 3rd and short opportunities Iowa had today. It makes things a lot more flexible for play calling.

This is the most Iowa take ever. They beat Idaho State. By the way, Idaho State managed 420 yards of offense and scored 28 points. We aren’t very good no matter how you spin it. The good news is we don’t have to be that good to have a shot at the West.

Yeah all it shows is our D is great and our O terrible, which we already knew.

This^^^. Once Castro ran back the pick 6 it was essentially over and we weren't going to do anything remotely risky.
Again, and I've posted this two dozen times at least.

This staff knows where it's bread is buttered. Defense and special teams (though I think Taylor has regressed a bit and it warrants monitoring)

Stanley era teams didn't have a defense as elite as this. Kirk and Brian knew there would be track meets and they coached in some games to outscore people.

This team is not going to let a team back in a game by taking risks. In fact it can look boring as hell and that's what infuriates the uneducated fan. But it works far more often than not.

That game was over when Castro scored. In fact ISU was about 90% beaten when they marched fifteen plays on the opening drive and got nothing. We didn't even need the offense on the field that much in the second half

Like to think it’s looking at a glass half full. I’m not sure why so many people think the sky is falling year in and year out. Iowa football has always been complimentary football. This year our offense is more complimentary than years past. Not saying everyone deserves contract extensions and not blind to the fact we need to improve… but for F sake I get tired of reading the negative shit after every game. We won,we’re 2-0, and things could be worse. Atleast we have a defense and special teams that allows us to play Kirks style of football. When he is no longer the coach and we’re 1-1, but scored 44 points and still lost you negative posters gonna be happier?
It’s not always the funnest to watch but his formula work more times than not. Roast me if that helps you vent, Brian and Barnett have a lot to prove and leave a lot to be improved. We do not have the talent or pedigree to be an Alabama, OSU and Michigan type team and get those recruits… and if you think we should you need to lower your expectations. Top recruits don’t look at Iowa the same way the these those schools and likely never will. Hawks 2-0!

Getting closer, Cade was so close on his timing after missing so much preseason. Think how the game changes if he hits on one of two of those bombs. I’m actually very encouraged after watching the boa constrictor that is Iowa’s defense. Another week of timing before Pedo state. My only major critique of the game was using Caleb on that 3 rd down and not The hot hand Jazz. Also the play call on another 3 rd down where Iowa ran a slow crossing pattern 5 yards short of the sticks with our slowest receiver Nico. That play screams using Brown who can make someone miss and has a chance on making a first. If that’s not the reason we picked Brown up in the portal why did we bother. I sense another case where we are not recognizing talent and gonna lose him to someone like Purdue who will make him all Big 10.

I thought that Kaleb could've/should've broken the tackle on our last possession on his third down run. If he gets outside it would have been game over at that point. To Patterson's credit, he does an excellent job of staying north and south and is capable of breaking tackles.

As an OC, all you can do is put your players in a position to succeed, and they have to do the rest. There were multiple times yesterday where the Hawks were set up for success and just couldn't make the play.

McNamara missed Anderson long, and another time he had a wide open Vines and he missed him short (Vines was interfered with, but they weren't calling that all game). I am pretty sure those misses had a lot to do with limited practice reps, hopefully he gets healthier soon (I am not opposed to him sitting W. Michigan to get that thing healed).

Johnson had several runs where he was one-on-one in space, and he got taken down. I thought that one at the end was particularly bad, that was a really well blocked play, and he just needed to beat one guy. Had he bounced instead of angling off the edge, there is no way that guy gets him.

We ran a nice WR screen to Vines on our last FG drive, and though it got 8 or so, it would have been a TD had he made 1 guy miss in space.

Several plays later, we got exactly the look we wanted on the TE scissors, but someone screwed up the depth and our guys ran into each other.

We have way too many plays where our OL run right past defenders screaming to the ball carrier.

Despite the poor offesnive production, I came away from the game cautiously optimistic. So often last year, it did not seem like there were any plays to be made. This year, there were plays to be made, we just aren't making them yet. I think we can get there. I would love to see aboutt 75 snaps vs. W. Michigan, that would really help our O get in a groove.

I was very confident at 10-0. At 17-0, it was just a formality.

Good stuff

Apparently, Jones is building an NFL reputation. Colby has been getting some powerful blocks on the inside. Dunker has likely solved our right tackle problem if we are patient. He is a physical beast. Richman is a proven left tackle. Left guard? Hmm. Pass pro has been impressive. Depth? Hmm. We are not just zone blocking. More pulling, which means more body on body technique. We have a good stable of RB’s. Great TE’s. Wide receivers? Give them time with Cade, look for improvement. We may well be closer than we think on O.

If Cade connects on either one of those two deep balls where the receiver had five steps and Iowa scores 27 and BF avoids being a national joke for a week. We still controlled that game. The offense is showing a feint pulse, but they better keep improving given what we have coming up.

Maybe it's me, but I'm tired of the take the foot off the gas approach. I totally get that the game was wrapped up and handily in our favor at early, but at some point we have to look toward the future. PSU is not a game that is going to be over at the half or shortly after. IMO if were comfortable running the ball against PSU then they're braver then I am, but if our staff feels that we're going to be more dependent on the passing game then we should be throwing the ball regardless of what the score is. I get you don't want to show your hand too soon or give them more film, but our offense needs to get going and if were content with it being stagnant now I don't see anything changing when it needed to step up to help our defense and special teams.

We've scored on back to back drives to open two games, I'm pretty ecstatic about that. That shows that the scripted plays that they work on in practice are starting to stick. Guys need to be patient, we have a bunch of new guys due to the portal and the QB missed significant practice time. The offense hasn't demonstrated incremental improvement like this at the beginning of a season in years. People should be thrilled.
